2016 Community Impact Report - Worthington Resource Pantry

2016 Community Impact Report
1
Letter from the Chairman of the Board & the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
This year, we broke new records at the Pantry! The number of families served this year increased a
whopping 20% in comparison to last year, from 1,200 families served to over 1,500 families served.
We also expanded our hours of service and we started new programs. These new programs aided our
regular patrons here at the pantry; we also reached out into the community to ensure that
Worthington students did not face hunger over school breaks.
Our space on Huntley Road, made possible through your support last year, allowed for our expansion of
services. We increased our inventory, created a better shopping flow, and reduced our wait times. We
held enrichment classes, including cooking and art classes, for our pantry patrons and created a
children’s area filled with books and games. Our hope is that patrons leave with not just full carts, but
full hearts as well.
We also expanded the programs that are part of the Pantry, including Drug Safe Worthington, which is
building its momentum through action committees, and Walk Worthington, which was awarded a
federal grant this year and which was recognized by the Worthington City Council for promoting good
will in our community.
All of these accomplishments could only have happened with the generous support of all of you - our
many volunteers and donors. We are truly blessed that so many people from our community have
come together to serve our neighbors in need! Thank you!
Even while we celebrate the successes of this past year, the needs continue to grow. We expect to see
an additional 20% increase in total families served in 2017. Your continued support is essential to meet
this need.
Thank you again for all that you did in 2016 and we look forward to continuing to work together to reach
new milestones in 2017!

Meet Some Neighbors
Trista
Trista is a stay-at-home mom of two sweet and adorable daughters—2-and 4-years-old. Last year, her
husband left his job in construction when the owner stopped paying his workers. An uncle in Atlanta
offered him a well-paying position, so they sold their furniture and appliances in anticipation of the
move. But the job didn’t materialize. The family moved out of their house and in with Trista’s mother-inlaw. Since then, her husband has been working in manufacturing for a temp agency for $11.50 an
hour. He is hoping for a full-time permanent position with the company which would raise his
pay to $13.00 an hour. In the meantime, the family needs a different car. Their current vehicle has no
heat or air conditioning, and one of the windows will not close. They recently were denied food stamps
because the system indicated they were over the income guidelines. Fortunately, that issue was
resolved. Coming to the Worthington Resource Pantry has helped Trista’s family during these tough
times. Until they get back on their feet, Trista reports that her family comes to the pantry for our “great
selection of meat and produce.”  She adds, “The diapers really help, since they are such an expensive
item.”
Lynee
Lynee is one of those neighbors who started shopping at the pantry about one year ago. She lost her job
as a well-paid sales manager at a worldwide telecommunications company when the company closed
the Columbus office. Lynee continues to look for work, but as a 59-year-old woman with a successful
record of 18 years employment, she is considered “over-qualified”. Recently, her husband of 36 years
fell ill and is on disability following a triple bypass. On top of these employment hurdles, Lynee and her
husband are raising their two grandsons. Lynee never expected to be in this position, but she maintains
a positive and thankful outlook. “My life is nothing like it used to be, but you do what you have to do.”
While she has found it challenging to navigate the system of government assistance, the pantry is a
bright spot in Lynee’s day. “You come here and know that it’s nothing you did. I have never been
supported by so many positive people.”
Ashley
Ashley is 23 years old with a winning smile and a sweet disposition. She has been shopping at
the pantry for only a few months. It is her first experience with “assistance”. She finds it
“stressful” and understands that she can never get “too comfortable” as life can hand you
challenges when you least expect it. Ashley moved to Columbus several years ago to attend
community college, but left school to work full-time at a chain pizza restaurant in order to make
ends meet. She was promoted to manager, and her store was one of the top sellers in the
nation. Then, her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and Ashley moved home to care for
her. Four years later, Ashley is back in the city and looking for work. While she “would like to
be in a better place’, Ashley is optimistic about the future. “Things are always changing.” She
hopes to find a job that uses her management and customer service skills, marry her fiancé of
two years, and start a family.

Community Involvement
Drug Safe Worthington: A program of the Worthington Resource Pantry, Drug Safe Worthington’s goal
is to provide coordinated, ongoing, and focused community efforts to heighten awareness and create a
culture to prevent substance abuse. One in four users start by abusing prescription drugs. Heroin,
prescription opioids, crack cocaine, and marijuana are all highly available and easy to obtain, according
to the Ohio Attorney General, and bath salts are available at gas stations and convenience
stores. Heroin and powdered cocaine users are getting younger and younger. Equally as alarming are
drug overdose deaths. In Ohio, there are more than eight deaths per day from drug overdoses (an Ohio
death every two hours and 52 minutes). In Franklin County, drug deaths increased from 36 in 2000 to
192 in 2010, with Worthington losing several of its youths. It is these statistics that Drug Safe
Worthington hopes to stem.
Walk Worthington: A program of the Worthington Resource Pantry, Walk Worthington seeks to get our
community moving. In partnership with the Worthington Libraries, weekly healthcare talk-andwalks were held over the summer. And in partnership with the Worthington Historical Society, two
educational walks were held. And we can’t forget about the winter: Walk Worthington sponsored a
luminary walk in the Colonial Hills neighborhood over the holidays. How about a yoga walk? Done. How
about training walks for the Cap City Half Marathon? In partnership with Worthington Parks and
Rec, Walk Worthington sponsored training walks. And In 2016, Walk Worthington received a federal
grant from America Walks and the Every Body Walk! Collaborative to do a fundraising-as-incentive
model program.  For every mile logged by a participant, the Pantry got a dime.  We had a goal of walking
10,000 miles but Worthington walked 13,000 miles!
Mid-Ohio Foodbank: Executive Director Jennifer Fralic sits on the Agency Council for the Mid-Ohio
Foodbank, sharing her extensive knowledge of delivering healthy food to neighbors with others in the
business of providing food for those in need throughout our broader community.
Field Placement Site for OSU Students: Worthington Resource Pantry partners with The Ohio State
University College of Social Work and College of Medical Dietetics to help train students in their fields of
study. Students are key - and enthusiastic - contributors to the operations of the Resource Pantry.
Community Garden at the Worthington Rec Center: Some of our volunteers are active
gardeners. And working through the Worthington Resource Pantry, these volunteers plant and
harvest plots of fresh produce at the Community Garden and share the bounty from their work with our
neighbors at the pantry.
