Science and Topic- ‘‘Fire and Ice’
This terms cross curricular theme is a geography based topic studying the hot and cold places in the world. Children will learn about the
landscape and the way of life of people in Africa and Antarctica. They will study the animals found in these environments and will compare
the external parts of their bodies. Children will begin to recognise that all living things need food and water to stay alive and will discuss
the different needs of animals, including humans. Children will develop basic map skills by examining plans and globes; they will design and
build maps and models of their own safari park and will develop new skills when designing and making moving animal pictures. They will
investigate traditional African arts and crafts and will experiment with a range of these including weaving and sculpture. In PSHCE children
will learn about healthy eating and discuss why it is ‘good to be me’. They will think about their goals for the coming term.

Year1: By reading and talking about books with children and talking about the sounds in words. By helping them to learn the spellings that are
sent home regularly.
By talking to children about what they are learning and helping them to research topics, perhaps on the internet or in a trip to the local library.
