From the (Acting) Principal
Dear Parents, Staff and Students,
Ash Wednesday and Lent
Last Sunday, I was most fortunate to attend the launch of the Project Compassion Campaign at a Mass
celebrated by Bishop Robert McGuckin, and attended by 16 schools from across the diocese. Members of the
College Youth Ministry Team represented St Saviour’s College at the celebration. Yesterday, as a community,
we celebrated House Liturgies to mark the beginning of the journey through to Easter. During this time, each
member of staff and students were marked with an ashen cross on their forehead, signifying a willingness to
‘turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel’ during this forty day period.
Lent is an invaluable time to reassess who we are, and ‘where we are at’ spiritually in our lives. Lent is a time
for nourishment and reflection, to look deep into our hearts and question those personal behaviours that move
us away from good. It is a call to conversion and, in many ways a reality check; a time to take stock, in a
prayerful way that calls us to an inner change. This Lent, may our challenge be to reflect on those qualities
within ourselves that do not reflect the loving nature of God. May we be called into action, and to engage,
where possible, in fasting, prayer and almsgiving.

Just Leadership Day
Last Friday, St Saviour’s College played host to some 120 students from across the diocese. We welcomed
students from St Mary’s College, St Joseph’s College, St Ursula’s College, Downlands College, Mackillop
Catholic College, Holy Name, St Thomas More’s, St Anthony’s, St Patrick’s Allora, and St Joseph’s Chinchilla.
The Day was led up by Megan Burke from Caritas to promote the up-and-coming Project Compassion Annual
Lenten Campaign that commenced yesterday with Ash Wednesday. The theme of this year’s campaign is
“Love Your Neighbour” and focusses on our willingness to look beyond the needs of ourselves and support
those in our global community who suffer at the hands of extreme poverty. Our College Youth Ministry Team
were worthy representatives for the College on the day. Angela Travers from the Toowoomba Catholic
Schools’ Office emailed me stating, “Many of the teachers who attended from other schools also made mention
of the friendly and responsible manner exhibited by the girls. Please pass on to the girls a very big thank you
for their assistance on the day. It was a wonderful day of learning and networking for the eleven schools that
attended.” Thank you Mrs Grant and to the Youth Ministry Team for your involvement in this great day!

SRC Badge Ceremony
Congratulations to our Student Council Representatives who were presented with their badges on last week’s assembly.
Best wishes for a productive year of leadership.
Camps and Excursions
Over the past two weeks, we have had a full calendar, with a whole host activities. Last week, our Year 8 and 12 cohorts
travelled to Camp Cooby to engage in eventful three day programs, while this week, our Year 10 cohort travelled to
Perseverance Dam for a two day experience. On Monday, our Year 9 students attended a day of activities at Emu Gully;
Tuesday – Year 7 engaged in a team-building Retreat at James Byrne Centre, led by our Year 12 Leaders; and our Year
11 engaged in a ‘Day of Hope’, presented by facilitator, Glenn Gerreyn. I trust the girls were able to take away some
valuable learnings from these experiences, and had time to nourish friendships and learn more about themselves. Many
thanks to all the staff involved, particularly Ms Kim Murray for her organisation of these activities.
Sports trials and Competitions
There have been a number of sports trials and competitions that have been taking place over the past weeks. Many
thanks to Mrs Doherty for her leadership in overseeing these activities. In addition, our Year 7s and 8s fielded a team for
the Laura Geitz Netball competition hosted by Downlands over the weekend. Congratulations to Mrs Grant and the girls
for gaining a very commendable fourth position. Our basketballers continue to do the College proud in our Friday Night
Competition. It would be great to see some spectators come and support the teams as we near the finals. Years 7/8 play
at 4pm, Years 9/10 at 6pm, and Years 11/12 at 9pm at the St Mary’s College Clive Berghofer Stadium each Friday night
during Term 1.
Debating
Debating commenced this week with our Junior team, ably coached by Mrs Whisson, competing. Next week Mrs Creedon
and the Senior team begin their season. Best wishes to the girls and their coaches for a successful competition.
International Women’s Day
Next Friday, 10 March, we celebrate International Women’s Day and welcome to our community a number of invited
guests from local government, Colleges and our wider community. The Women’s International Breakfast is becoming a
well-recognised event on our calendar, therefore RSVPs are essential. The breakfast will take place in the Callaghan
Centre, from 7.00 – 8.30am, at a cost of $10 per person. This year, our Guest Speaker will be Mrs Jodie Willey (nee
Collins – SSC Class of 1994) who is now the National Legal Principal of Shine Lawyers. All are most welcome! Please
contact the College to reserve your place.

Appointment of a Boarding Manager
After a rigorous appointment process, I have great pleasure in announcing that a Boarding Manager has been appointed to
lead and manage McAuley House. Mrs Suzanne Coulter joins us from Sydney and has extensive experience, and a great
passion for boarding having worked in residential care of young people for almost 25 years. For 4 years she was the
Boarding Manager of The Glennie School; has worked at the Slade School, Warwick; Taylors College, Sydney (managing
an international student residence as a part Charles Sturt University); and The International School of Macao in Macau
(where she was responsible for developing and managing the foundation boarding school program). In addition, Mrs
Coulter has a keen insight and interest in the area of indigenous students in residential care, after study tours of remote
residential schools and in community in the Northern Territory. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Coulter to our St
Saviour’s College community at the commencement of Term 2.
At this point I would particularly like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all our supervisors, particularly Senior
Supervisors, Mrs Penny Gardner and Ms Hanna Chen. Both women continue to go above and beyond their duties and
have been a great personal support to me since I started in my role. I thank them most sincerely for their leadership and
commitment to their wellbeing of the girls in their care. And best wishes to Hanna as she takes up maternity leave as of
the end of the week.
Best wishes and blessings for the coming week.

Dear Parents/Carers
A couple of weeks ago Junior Landcare once again sent us a large tray of seedlings for our Garden. The garden of herbs
and vegetables is located near the visitor carpark inside the College ground. The vegetables and herbs are used by our
Home Economics and Hospitality students when they do their cooking lessons. We thank Landcare for their generosity.
QDU debating for the Year 9 team kicked off last night. Our team, coached by Mrs. Whisson comprises of; Zina Alexandra
Dorado, Hannah Hoger and Abigail Reuter. Our chairperson for this debate was Hayley McMahon and our reserve was
Rianna Castle-Smith. The topic was; That we should allow corporate sponsorship for schools. we were defeated by one
point. Coach, Mrs. Whisson said the team worked well together and that Zina was commended by the adjudicator.

A reminder about our International Women’s Day Breakfast that will be held in our Hall on Friday 10 March. The breakfast
begins at 7.00am and will conclude by 8.00am. The cost is $10.00. All welcome, so join your daughter to help celebrate
International Women’s day with us. An invitation with all the details is in the back of our Newsletter. Speaker, Jodie Willey
is a past pupil and Legal Principal at Shine Lawyers, Brisbane.
Just a reminder to parents not to park in the bus zone in Neil Street. This is particularly a problem on Wednesday
afternoons when our students are returning from sport, but it is a NO PARKING ZONE at all times.
I was lucky enough to experience Year 8 camp at Cooby Dam this week. I was joined by Mrs. Wuersching, Mr. Irwin and
Miss Julia and Yoshimi. The activities were a combination of mindfulness, to cater for our Bienestar program,
environmental education and outdoor, team building activities. Our popular outdoor activities included a canoeing race, low
ropes and high ropes and the wall climb.

As the term enters the home stretch, assessment deadlines loom. I
would like to remind all that when a draft is NOT handed in on time,
Academic Support will commence. The incomplete draft is often a
sign that students are struggling to keep up and that they may need
some extra support. This support will initially take place with me
during lunch hours. If it seems that there is insufficient time during the
lunch hours to complete the draft I will contact parents and carers to
arrange after school support. I thank everyone in advance for
ensuring that help is sought long before the stage of draft
submission. I strongly encourage students to be proactive and seek
help in the first instance from their class teachers. After school
tutoring and lunch time support are just two options available.
NAPLAN
All students in Years 7 and 9 are encouraged to participate in the NAPLAN testing. However, there are some instances
where students may be exempted from one or more parts of the testing program. Exemptions may be granted for students
who have a language background other than English and have been attending school in Australia for less than a year OR a
student who may have a significant or complex disability. While participation by all students is expected, students may be
withdrawn from the testing program by their parent/carer. This is a matter for consideration by individual parent/
caregivers.
Please contact me ([email protected] or 46371600) if you would like to discuss this information.
Assessment Block
This week the Assessment Block will be released to students. Due to restrictions the Assessment Block will run from
Tuesday 21 March until Friday 24 March. Term 2’s work will commence during the final week of this term. Students with
SBA/T’s are asked to notify employers about the dates of school exams to ensure enough notice is given. ALL absences
during the Assessment Block require a medical certificate.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher interviews are scheduled for Tuesday 18 April, 2017 from 3 to
5pm. We encourage all parents and carers to participate in the interviews aimed
at discussing your daughter’s progress at the mid-point of Semester One. For
overseas parents, please email the College suitable times for Skype interviews.
During the Easter holiday period, Interim reports will be sent. It is essential that
an interview is made for any student identified as being Behind Schedule or has
been allocated a 4 (Needs Improvement) for any of the learning habits.
How to Book
To book interviews with staff members, please select the following link to book
your Parent Teacher Interviews online.

“You shall love your neighbour as yourself” Matthew 22:39
This week we have launched our Project Compassion campaign in conjunction
with our sacred season of Lent.
Members of the School Leadership Team and Youth Ministry were privileged to
attend the “Just Leadership” day on Friday and developed a greater understanding
of the work of Caritas in international aid and development. Students from across
the diocese networked and broke into taskforces to investigate the work being
currently done and how best we can support that at a school level. It was exciting
to be amongst such an enthusiastic bunch who have a passion for the “Common
Good”.
Our Year 12 Leadership camp took place last week and the girls were a credit to the College in the manner in which they
worked together and interacted with our Year 8 students. We enjoyed a variety of activities and camping in tents was a
new experience for some of our students.
On Tuesday our Year 7 students attended their “Sister to Sister” Activity day at the James Byrne Centre. The girls were
kept busy with a day full of activities and formed some great relationships with our School Student leaders.
We have now completed the camps program for the year and are looking forward to directing all our attentions to the
classroom achievement. We thanks Mrs Murray and all staff who were involved with the camp organisation.

VET and Careers Coordinator—Mr. Mark Gillespie
Dear Parents and Carers,
A reminder to all parents/carers of our Year 10 girls that they are to have organized their Work Experience employer by
the end of this term. This requires the return of the Work Experience Agreement form that was provided to them last
week. This form requires the signatures of the employer, the parent, the student and the College. It is important that this
deadline is met in order to put in place all the necessary arrangements. Residential girls will have the form signed by our
Principal.
All the Year 9 students will be creating a Careers Profile through a government sponsored careers website. Go to the
following web address to access the MyFuture website: www.myfuture.edu.au You will need the girls College email
address and their password to gain access to this site. It has a range of activities and information available in regard to
careers and I encourage you to explore this site with your daughter.
There are a number of School Based Traineeships available for our Year 11 girls at present. A traineeship is a means to
gain a Certificate III in a range of areas particularly in Business, Hospitality and Retail. These are advertised on the
Careers and VET Notice Board in the library and notices are sent to appropriate year levels depending on the
requirements of the employer offering the traineeship. A list of the SBT’s is also included in each newsletter. This option
can provide a legitimate alternative pathway to a successful career by providing genuine workplace experience that is
valued by potential employers. Successful completion of the requirements also provides a nationally recognized
Vocational qualification. Several of our past students who completed these traineeships also gained entry to a range of
Universities and Colleges. Completion of a Certificate III also contributes 6 points to their QCE.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss any of these points in greater depth.
Kind regards,
Mark Gillespie

This week Brisbane company Grin & Tonic performed at our College for students in Years 7 to 10.
In a new show called “Our Place”, Brie and Tom, the actors, entertained the students with a fantastic range of mostly
Australian poetry. The poems and songs were chosen around the idea of Place. In the course of 50 minutes, the show
featured a series of Places each with its set of poems. Charlotte from Year 7 was a wonderful assistant on stage in the
poems, “Mrs Swipe Speaks Out” and “Too many remotes”.
“Our Place” opened with a variety of shots of Australia and the question: What is home to you? Taking the tech voice of
Siri, Brie narrated a story taking Tom home through a number of places.

P & F News
We had a successful year in 2016 allocating the fundraising levy paid by parents on a range of resources that benefit
your daughter. These have included teaching resources, bus operating costs, portable shade shelter, furnishings for
the boarding house, end of year gifts for Year 12 and a soon to be installed water cooler near the oval.
Parents are reminded that the St Saviour’s P&F does not undertake fundraising activities. There are no fetes, raffles or
chocolates to sell! The P&F meets 6 times per year.
Please contact me directly if you would like more information.
