Pupils are expected to wear their uniform smartly and in a manner that represents the school well. They should wear uniform at all times, including on the journey to and from school and games facilities. Pupils should be able to move around the school site and engage in activities safely and comfortably. In practical lessons pupils should follow instructions regarding uniform as set out by their subject teacher. In exceptional circumstances and extremes of weather pupils will be informed of changes to uniform. Additional Information All items of clothing should be clearly named. Year 7 and 8 pupils are required to have their name clearly marked on the outside of Games and PE shirts, 12cm down from the left shoulder seam. For Science and Technology a white, non-flammable protective coat (cotton or polyester-cotton) is required. This must be named in indelible ink in large letters above the breast pocket. The coat should be kept clean and free from other marks and writing. Bags should be adequate for carrying kit and books without damage. They should be black, dark blue or dark red or a combination of those colours. Most children use sports bags or back packs, but these should not be large rucksacks. Requests for variation in school uniform The Portsmouth Grammar School is a Christian non-denominational school that welcomes pupils of all faiths and none. Parents should be aware that all pupils at The Portsmouth Grammar School are required to wear a uniform. The Headmaster will consider written requests from parents for variations in the uniform on religious or medical grounds that are consistent with the school’s ethos and its policy on health and safety. The Headmaster may take expert advice, and arrange to meet with the parents to discuss the implications of such a request. The School Uniform Shop Our uniform is available to purchase through our own dedicated Uniform Shop situated in the school (E Block). With the exception of footwear and the suit for Sixth Form girls, all the uniform items are available from Nursery to Sixth Form are available. The shop is primarily open during term time, but for the benefit of new parents, the shop opens on certain days during the summer holidays.
