and Implications of Landforms and Soils on
Silvicultural Decision Making
T
he lake Abitibi Model Forest in partnership with Northeast Science & Information and the Forest
Research Partnership is sponsoring two related field oriented workshops; Introduction to the
Northeast Forest Ecosystem Classification (NEFEC) and Implications of Landforms and Soils on
Silviculture Decision Making. Copies of the Lake Abitibi Model Forest Soil Disturbance Manual and
the Northeast Region Forest Ecosystem Classification Guide will be supplied and used as background
resources. Please note that OPFA Continuing Education Credits are pending.
Principle Instructors: Kim Taylor (FEC) and Ken Armson (Landforms and Soils)
Location:
Glendale Motor Hotel, Iroquois Falls, ON
Date:
Cost:
June 24 – 26, 2003
Both Courses - $350.00
NEFEC only - $150.00 (June 24)
Landforms and Soils - $250.00 (June 25 & 26)
Registration fee includes lunches, transportation to the field, manuals and a reception on Tuesday

Outcome:
T
he NEFEC Introductory course will provide participants with a quick introduction to the NEFEC.
The focus will be on understanding how the system is used in the field. Participants will get a
brief introduction to forest soils and plants. Participants learn enough background material to be able
to effectively function during the next two days of the Landform and Soils workshop.
T
he Implications of Landform and Soils on Silvicultural Decision Making workshop will allow
participants to explore the relationship between landform, soils, forest cover and productivity.
The focus will be on the impact that substrate has on silvicultural decision making. Ken Armson uses
an exploratory approach where student are asked what they see in the stand, examine soil pits and then
discuss their findings in light of options for management.
Registration is strictly limited to 30 persons and we do anticipate a full house.
Preference is given to those signing up for both workshops.
There is no refund after June 13th, and no guarantee of an opening after that date.
