This guide should help you choose the right HTI
centrifuge for your specific needs.

Urine Sample Centrifugation:
A note of caution if you spin Urine specimens: If you have a fixed
speed centrifuge, chances are very good it is set the RCF and
speed for spinning blood samples only. Urine specimens must be
spun at a greatly reduced RCF in order to properly prep the
sample. If your facility is subject to CLIA and you spin urine
samples in a blood centrifuge, the CLIA inspector may not allow
the centrifuge to pass inspection. You will be asked to either stop
spinning urine samples, or acquire a centrifuge capable of
spinning at the correct RCF for separating urine samples.
Speed (RPM) vs. g-Force (RCF):
The most important factor when choosing a centrifuge is the
g-Force, or RCF, not the speed. The RCF determines the ability of
a centrifuge to separate the specimen. Most specimens must be
spun within a specific RCF range in order to properly prep the
sample for testing and analysis. The guide below will help you
select a model based on RCF, RPM, # of tubes, specimens and
other attributes.
CLIA, Calibration and speed checking:
Your lab or practice may be subject to CLIA regulations if what
you do is considered to be "moderately complex", or "highly
complex". CLIA, (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment
of 1988); may dictate that your centrifuges need to be
"Calibrated" every 6 months. CLIA inspectors may visit your
facility to make sure you are maintaining your equipment and
following protocols; and that your equipment is capable of
performing the protocols properly, etc.

Calibration involves using a tachometer to check the speed of
your centrifuge for accuracy. CLIA inspectors will "pass" a
centrifuge that operates within plus or minus 100 RPM of the
actual setting. If for example, your centrifuge is set to spin at
3,400 RPM; CLIA will pass it if it is anywhere between 3,300
and 3,500 RPM; as long as your protocol calls for spinning in
that range as well. To check your centrifuge you can purchase
a tachometer, item # C800-75.

HTI® PowerSpin™ Series centrifuges are compact, economical
and quiet. We offer both fixed (FX) and variable (LX) speed
models with fixed angle rotors, for 6 or 8 tubes to spin 7.5
– 15 ml tubes. By using adapters, you can also spin tubes
ranging from 2 – 7 ml. An optional Tube Holdster™ allows you to
have up to 18 tubes or adapters at your fingertips, side-mounted
on the centrifuge. PowerSpins are pre-drilled/tapped to accept
optional Tube Holdsters.

Whether you are a mobile vet, visiting nurse or doctor, we have
a PortaSpin that will meet your needs. Available with 6 or 8
place rotors and adapters to fit tubes ranging from 2 – 15 ml.
Standard with 12 Volt car lighter adapter, a 110V electrical outlet
adapter is optional for use back at the lab.
When using this unit you will most likely not be in your lab setting
so you will not have you standard bench-top tube rack. We
strongly recommend purchasing the optional Tube Holdster,
attaches easily to the side of the centrifuge and will hold up to 18
tubes or adapters.

The horizontal spin fixed speed PowerSpin™ HX centrifuge spins
at 3400 RPM. The horizontal rotor insures a clean, complete
separation of cellular components. Using a horizontal rotor for
spinning Serum Separator Tubes (SSTs) creates a tight uniform
horizontal seal, reducing the risk of red cell leakage.
The C822 features a Zero RPM safety lock, so the lid can not
be opened while the rotor is in motion. A digital timer and LCD
display provide user with the precise control of the spin cycle.

The BX is a versatile, state of the art variable-speed centrifuge
series with three rotor options.
Options are:
• Blood/Urine Tube, 2-12 ml Rotor: Max Speed = 5,000 RPM
• Microhematocrit/Capillary Tube Rotor: Max Speed = 11,000 RPM
• Microcentrifuge Tube, 0.5-3 ml Rotor: Max Speed = 13,000 RPM
Your BX can be a dedicated centrifuge with any one of the rotors,
or a versatile addition to your lab with up to three
interchangeable rotors with speeds from 1,000 – 13,000 RPM.
BX Centrifuges have advanced safety features such as a Zero
RPM lid latch control system (which makes sure the lid can not be
opened if the rotor is spinning), a stainless steel rotor chamber,
Auto-unbalance detection and shut-down (will shut-down the motor
if an off-balance condition is detected). With three
interchangeable rotors, the centrifuge features ARD (Automatic
Rotor Detection), the unit can automatically tell which of the three
rotors are loaded. This is an important safety feature as each of
the three rotors has a different maximum speed.
The Microhematocrit rotor features a Tube Reader built-into the
rotor lid. This makers reading crit values quick and easy after
your run, without having to remove the tubes and place them in a
reader, or on a reader-card, etc. The standard Blood & Urine
tube rotor fits 7.5 – 12 ml tubes and will not accept 15 ml tubes.
With adapters shown below, you can spin 0.5 – 3 ml tubes
(C800-04), or 3.5 – 6.5 ml tubes (C800-03).

BX Versatility: New Microhematocrit Tube Adapters: We have developed several microhematocrit tube
adapters that can be used with the Blood & Urine Tube Rotor, making a single rotor much more
versatile and eliminating the need to purchase an additional rotor, or change rotors. Both New C80034 and C8600-34 Adapters come in a Pkg/2 adapters, each and each adapter holds up to 4 MH
tubes. The Blood & Urine rotor runs at a max of 5,000 RPM, much slower than traditional
microhematocrit rotors with a 5 min. run. With our adapters, at 5,000 RPM, you can achieve a
complete microhematocrit separation in an 8 min. run.

The BX’s large digital display continuously shows three parameters in real-time: Speed (RPM), g-Force
(RCF) and Time – how much time is left in the run. A unique feature allows the user to select which of
