Legacies of Rome Mosaic Objective: 1. Create a mosaic that represents what the phrase “Legacies of Rome” means to you. Materials: Construction paper and glue Mosaic Directions: Students start by cutting faux mosaic tiles out of construction paper or gathering tiles/pebbles and then coloring them. These should be small simple geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles and triangles that are the size of a quarter or smaller. Sort the paper shapes into piles based on colors. Limit the selection to five colors at most. Draw a picture that teaches the legacies of Rome onto a piece of construction paper. The paper may be used as is, or cut into a shape. Make sure that the picture is fairly basic--an outline instead of a detailed drawing. Apply clear-drying, non-toxic glue to the drawing section by section. Each section will contain likecolored paper mosaic tiles. Firmly press the paper shape mosaic tiles onto the glue. Repeat for each section, and then set the completed mosaic aside to dry. Students looking for an alternative to paper may try felt, fabric or tissue mosaics. Grading: Please refer to the rubric on the back. Due Date: Beginning of class on September 15th.
