Chemistry: An Alien Periodic Table*
Name__________________________
A distant planet in a far away galaxy has been discovered. The planet is composed
of the same elements as Earth. However, the elements have different names &
symbols. Strangely, but luckily, there are no transition or inner transition elements
on the alien planet. Please arrange the elements on the periodic table from the
following clues.
1)
The unreactive gases are quackzil (Q), vulcanium (V), zook (Z), platro (Pl), zloch (Zch)
and kratt (Kt). Platro (Pl) is a noble gas, but it does not have 8 valence electrons.
Vulcanium (V) has the largest atomic radius. Quackzil (Q) has the ending electron
configuration, 3p6. Zook (Z) has less electron shielding than quackzil (Q). Kratt (Kt) is
in the same period as Sississ (Ss).
2)
The alkali metals are squishie (Squ), xalt (X), urrip (Urrp), mlock (M), blazz (Bz) and
dodo (D). Blazz (Bz) is the most reactive metal on the planet. Urrip (Urrp) has the
greatest electron affinity. Dodo (D) is in the same period as zloch (Zch). Xalt (X) has
the ending electron configuration, 6s1. Mlock (M) has a larger atomic radius than dodo
(D).
3)
The halogens are anno (An), blubble (Bl), Wababa (Waba), chow (Ch) and nuyte (Nu).
Wababa (Waba) is the most reactive nonmetal. Anno (An), wababa (Waba), chow (Ch)
and nuyte (Nu) are all diatomics. Blubble (Bl) is a metalloid. Nuyte (Nu) has valence
electrons in the 4th electron cloud. Anno (An) has a greater electron affinity than chow
(Ch).
4)
The metalloids are mumu (Mu), ozzie (Oz), blubble (Bl), rootsie (Roo), doodoo (Do),
uxley (Ux), wot (Wo), errr (E) and okie (Ok). Blubble (Bl) is the metalloid with the
highest mass and doodoo (Do) is the lightest metalloid. Mumu (Mu) and rootsie (Roo)
each have 4 valence electrons, but rootsie (Roo) has more protons that mumu (Mu). Errr
(E) has properties that suggest it is a light metal. Wot (Wo) has properties that suggest it
is a heavy metal. Okie (Ok) tends to have a –3 oxidation number. Uxley (Ux) and ozzie
(Oz) are both in the same period as kratt (Kt), but uxley (Ux) has a greater ionization
energy than ozzie (Oz).
5)
The lightest element on the planet which is also a diatomic element is yoyo (Yo). The
heaviest element on the planet is pootser (Poo) which is radioactive.
6)
Bobble (Bo) has only four protons in its nucleus.
7)
The oceans on the planet contain water molecules which each have 2 atoms of yoyo (Yo)
chemically combined with 1 atom of prattle (Prat). The oceans also contain dissolved
salt molecules which each have 1 atom of squishie (Squ) chemically combined with 1
atom of anno (An).
8)
Piepie (Pie) and eltro (El) are both in family 16. Eltro (El) has a greater ionization
energy the piepie (Pie).
9)
Lui (Li) and hui (Hi) are both metals in the same period. Hui (Hi) has a slightly smaller
atomic radius. Both elements have valence electrons in the 4 th electron cloud.
10)
Twirtle (Tw) has the smallest atomic radius of all the elements in the family that gains or
loses 4 valence electrons.
11)
Floxx (Fx) has a +2 oxidation number and little electron shielding.
12)
Jojojo (Jo), twizzle (Tz), byrt (By), and tlubb (Tb) are all metals with valence electrons in
the 6th electron cloud. However, twizzle (Tz) is the most nonmetallic of the four
elements. Tlubb (Tb) loses 3 valence electrons to form chemical bonds. Jojojo (Jo) has
a greater electron affinity than byrt (By).
13)
Sissis (Ss) has a +3 oxidation number.
14)
Luttro (Lu) and yertle (Yrt) are in the same family, although luttro (Lu) is less
electronegative than yertle (Yrt).
15)
Dwak (Dk) and paffst (Pfst) are in the same period. Paffst (Pfst) is more electronegative
than dwak (Dk).
