California Masons in the 21sT Century Annual Report 2008/2009 To Our Members Freemasonry is dedicated to ageless tenets—brotherly love, relief, and truth. Through them, we better ourselves and the world we live in. In this annual report, we share the ways that California Masons, lodges, and Masonic organizations apply these tenets to our modern world. Innovative resources directly benefit new and loyal members. Thoughtful approaches to philanthropy reach more corners of our communities. Together, we move California Freemasonry forward in the 21st century. Message From The Grand Master It’s a great time to be a Mason in California. We have embarked upon an era of exciting progress and unparalleled opportunity in California Freemasonry. The men knocking on the doors of our lodges – and calling, and e-mailing – are a testament to it. 2 We can no longer doubt our fraternity’s relevance in modern society. The 4,411 degrees conferred this year prove that the experiences we offer – fellowship and values and earnest pursuit of a better world – remain important to good men, no matter the century they inhabit. This year, it was my great honor and privilege to be the first grand master since 1965 to grant dispensations for two new lodges, Prometheus Lodge and Paideia Lodge. What awesome progress this represents. As I performed each dispensation ceremony, I reflected on the promise of fellowship and fraternity awaiting the members of these youngest California lodges, and felt a renewed sense of pride and excitement in our craft. We commenced an important and transformational partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles – one of the most respected academic establishments in the world. By doing so, we broke new ground in California. Through our project to Advance L arry L . A d a m s o n the Study and Understanding of Freemasonry, we are supporting dedicated academic research that will define Freemasonry to the world and, at long last, celebrate our fraternity’s history and innumerable contributions to society. We are growing and looking ahead in other ways. Children represent our future, and our lodges and members have embraced a new mission: to rebuild our Masonic youth orders. With the help of this renewed commitment, DeMolay, Rainbow Girls, and Job’s Daughters celebrated a number of successes in California – new local groups, greater lodge involvement, and more Masons stepping in to fill adult leader roles. We are also rebuilding our fraternity’s relationship with these youth orders, imbued with a lively spirit of cooperation and support. We will continue down this path and remain focused on a healthy, vibrant youth order presence in California. Yes, the 21st century is indeed an exciting time for our fraternity, and I am confident that our future has never been brighter. Applied Freemasonry means living our virtues today and building for a better tomorrow. In California, we truly embody that commitment. Grand Master’s Project Advancing the Study and Understanding of Freemasonry The project provides funding for a partnership between the Grand Lodge of California and the University of California, Los Angeles, one of the nation’s finest institutions of higher learning. The research and study it supports will align with the most serious scholarship on Freemasonry in the world today, dispelling myths and revealing our heritage in factual, research-based terms. Devoted academic research and coursework will provide important insight into the early development of Freemasonry and demonstrate how Masonic values and tenets shaped countries and civil societies around the world, including the development of a constitutional democracy in the United States. 33 Leadership development Master Masons raised per lodge increased to its highest level since 1983 attendees participated in the Ninth Annual California Masonic Symposium Masonicheritage.org launched, providing an online space for the Henry W. Member-Friendly Technology 6 It takes modern tools to impress Allan Benavides – and complete information. When Benavides started to consider Masonry, his first move was an Internet search for lodges in his community of Murrieta. He found temeculamasons.org. There was so much information there – articles, photos, and videos about Temecula Catalina Island Lodge No. 524 and Masonry in general – that he spent nearly three months researching it all. “I didn’t want to get involved with something I didn’t know anything about,“ says Benavides, one of 57 prospects who have contacted the lodge through the new Web site since January 2008. “Reading the Web site gave me confidence that Freemasonry was what I was looking for.“ Temecula Catalina Island Lodge’s new and improved site attracts prospective members while keeping current ones connected. In addition to news and reference materials, the site has features like an online apparel store, surveys, a dynamic lodge calendar, past issues of the lodge Trestleboard, behind-the-scenes search engine optimization, and a password-protected member area for Masonic study and online payment of dues and donations. The site also incorporates the lodge’s unique logo, designed to unite the brethren under a local Masonic identity. For Benavides, initiated in March 2009, the modern, informative Web site is exactly what he needs from his lodge. In turn, he is already an active member, recently facilitating a partnership between Temecula Catalina Island Lodge and the Lake Elsinore Storm, where he is assistant general manger. “I do everything online,” Benavides says. “Without the Web site, I would not have joined.” Award-winning Web site. Freemason.org received two 2009 Excel awards from Association Media & Publishing, recognizing the site’s design, functionality (brothers can use the site to submit news items or donate to the annual fund), ease of use, and content. “ Online leadership courses. Brothers can complete all five Lodge Management Certification Program courses online or sign up for free iMember 7 Webinars. ” I do everything online. Without the Web site, I would not have joined. Youth order support. Masons4youth.org launched in April to involve more Masons as leaders of California youth orders. Membership database. Lodge secretaries are increasingly turning to iMember, a powerful online database that instantaneously shares updated membership information with Grand Lodge. Masonic past and present. Masonicheritage. org enables a worldwide audience to access collections of the Henry W. Coil Library & Museum of Freemasonry. Partnering for Change By working with each other and with community partners, lodges and Grand Lodge have a greater impact in California. 8 Schools. Six lodges and the California Masonic Foundation (CMF) raised $30,000 to benefit San Francisco Unified School District, in partnership with 16 other community organizations devoted to improving the city’s public schools. Participating lodges included California No. 1, San Francisco No. 120, PacificStarr King No. 136, Phoenix No. 144, Mission No. 169, and Columbia-Brotherhood No. 370. Nurse education. California Masons help elevate the quality of health care and reduce the state’s shortage of nurses through a partnership with the Association of California Nurse Leaders. CMF is funding nurse leader scholarships, hospital certifications, and nursing education partnerships at state universities. Local kids. California lodges teamed up with the Junior Giants, a charitable after-school program of the San Francisco Giants, in a competition to fund the greatest number of baseball mitts for underprivileged children. More than $28,000 was raised – enough to present mitts to 1,400 kids. Meaningful community investments “ Eleven-year-old Xiisa Bullock Watts loves to read. But her school, Jose Ortega Elementary in San Francisco, struggles with budget cuts that prevent it from restocking the library. In the past, if Xiisa finished a book quickly, she had to wait an entire week to check out another. I’ve always had a love of reading. I want other kids to experience that – the joy of reading a book and learning something new and sharing it with your friends. ” Not anymore. California Lodge No. 1 stepped in as a school partner, and asked what Jose Ortega students needed most. The answer was a book drive. After a lodge donation of about 200 used young adult books, the school now has a new way for students to read more: “Grab and Go,“ a borrowing program that lets students pick up books at lunch. “Now, you can read a book, return it, and get another one right away – so, during the week, you have something to do besides just sit around,” laughs Bullock Watts, who recently completed fifth grade. She was so excited about the books that she volunteered to help staff the program for younger students. “I’ve always had a love of reading,“ she says. “I want other kids to experience that – the joy of reading a book and learning something new and sharing it with your friends.” For Jose Ortega Elementary, new books are just the beginning. In the past two years, California Lodge has donated about $17,000 to the school. Some of the money has already been used for teacher appreciation. Most is earmarked for an upcoming computer lab, another project at the top of the school’s wish list. 9 Serving our California Masonic family and our communities July 1, 2008-june 30, 2009 At the Masonic Homes 558 Masons, their wives, and widows received vital fraternal support and services 378 Masonic Homes of California residents 180 Masonic Outreach Services clients 38 children were provided a safe place to live, learn, and play at Covina 35,702 hours of volunteer time were given by 173 Masonic Homes senior and child residents In Our Masonic Family 10 4,411 degrees were conferred 1,829 Entered Apprentice 1,328 Fellow Craft 1,254 Master Mason 1,106 members participated in leadership training 88 Inspector Administrative Seminar 225 Secretaries’ Retreats 367 Wardens’ Retreats 251 Lodge Management Certification Program (LMCP) and Masonic Education courses 175 Online LMCP courses In Our Communities 85,688 were served by our community programs 85,000 children were issued free child IDs 304 educators from 68 schools attended Masonic Student Assistance Program training 384 students received scholarships 225 from lodges (not all reported) 150 from the California Masonic Foundation 9 from the Masonic Homes of California 11 Commitment to the Past New research on Freemasonry In the spring of 2010, Freemasonry will have a new way of defining itself to the world. The University of California, Los Angeles will offer two new undergraduate courses, exploring the history of civil society, fraternalism, and Freemasonry in America and Europe. 12 The courses, funded by the Grand Master’s Project to Advance the Study and Understanding of Freemasonry, will study the fraternity’s role in historical social, political, intellectual, and cultural circles, beginning in the early 18th century. Students will learn how Freemasons introduced ideas about social equality and civil societies during the Enlightenment, and helped establish constitutional democracy in the United States. The curriculum will be developed by one of the world’s foremost Masonic scholars, UCLA history professor Dr. Margaret C. Jacob, with assistance from a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow. One of those assistants, UCLA Ph.D. student Matt Crow, is poised to help separate fact from fiction and tell the truth about Freemasonry – which, for too many, remains a mystery. “Freemasonry and similar organizations have a mysterious, fascinating image in the public mind,” says Crow, 26. “I think people will be interested in putting Freemasonry in the context of American history and democracy.” After all, he notes, Freemasonry had profound influence on 18th-century ideas and politics that helped shape democracy. “It’s nonpartisan, it’s nonsectarian, but it also has a language of ethics and personal morality and civics,” he says. “In the study of Freemasonry, you can see all these things connected.” When it comes to storing, researching, and displaying the contributions of California Masons, the Grand Lodge facilities are better than ever. “ Preserve. Thanks to an extensive renovation of the archive room, completed this year, the Grand Lodge has more than double the storage space for Masonic items. I think people will be interested in putting Freemasonry in the context of American history and democracy. ” Display. The Henry W. Coil Library & Museum of Freemasonry has a wider selection than ever of rare books, archives, historical photos, and important artifacts. A new exhibit, which debuted at the 2009 Conference of Grand Masters of Masons in North America, details Masonry’s leading role in the development of California. Share. Since the launch of masonicheritage.org in May 2009, the public can discover Masonry’s past from anywhere in the world. The Web site, a virtual space for the Henry W. Coil Library & Museum collection, includes a search feature and the museum’s current exhibit. 13 GRAND TREASURER’S REPORT 14 The manner in which the Grand Lodge of California and all of its related entities have been able to weather the difficult financial and economic storm during the last year is a testimony to their history of careful, conservative budgeting and sound management. Even during the best of economic times, all entities have budgeted tightly, managed efficiently, and monitored closely. As a result, the organizations remain in sound financial condition. While other organizations, for-profit and notfor-profit alike, are slashing expenses, curtailing programs and services, laying off employees, and even going under, the Grand Lodge and its related entities have continued to provide the expected level of services and programs with no economically induced employee layoffs. The Masonic Homes of California has retained its AA credit rating by both Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings. This has been accomplished by entering the economic downturn on extremely sound financial footing, by making G l e n n D. W o o d y slight cuts in expenses, by lowering the level of distributions from investment accounts, and by continuing to budget very tightly. The Grand Lodge leadership, the efficient and conscientious staff, and the cadre of hard-working volunteer members have simply tightened their belts and redoubled their efforts to plan, manage, and perform at a high level. Much of the budgeting is based on the use of rolling averages. Due to the healthy years preceding the recession, this has helped to ease the effect of the economic downturn. However, in the next several years, as the rolling averages lose those good years, the difficult years will have a larger impact on future budgeting. One can be confident that this organization will continue to apply the same sound management principles and remain financially healthy in the future. 15 ExpenSES In support of masonic Values $ 40,174,000 for fraternal support and care $ 33,557,000to operate the Masonic Homes of California (Union City and Covina combined) $ 3,384,000to provide Masonic Outreach Services Your Contributions $6,474,000 was generously contributed by 6,098 California Masons and fRiends o f Masonry 16 $ 1,027,000 to the Annual Fund to support Masonic Outreach Services and Masonic Education and Leadership Training $ 4,297,000 in Wills and Bequests $ 606,000 in Charitable Gift Annuities $ 544,000 to the Grand Master’s Project: Advancing the Study and Understanding of Freemasonry (cash and pledges) $ 3,233,000for Children’s Services residents July 1, 2008-june 30, 2009 $ 1,753,000 f or education and Masonic leader development $ 1,296,000 for scholarships and youth ORDER leadership grants $ 398,000lodge scholarships (not all reported) $ 737,000California Masonic Foundation scholarships $ 141,000Masonic Homes of California scholarships $ 20,000California Masonic Foundation leadership grants to Masonic youth orders $ 265,000for Masonic education and leadership TRAINING $ 192,000in support of public education $ 165,000for Masonic Student Assistance Program training workshops $ 22,000for support of public schools $ 5,000for California Teacher of the Year awards 17 Donors honor roll of Philanthropy has been a tradition for California Masons for more than 159 years. In order to live out our enduring tenets of brotherly love and relief, we raise funds from within the fraternity to support those programs to which we have dedicated ourselves. GRAND Secretary’s REPORT 18 This has been a remarkable year for California Masonry. I feel a great sense of pride in our accomplishments, the milestones we’ve achieved, and the programs we’ve launched. But more than that, I’m proud of the way we’ve accomplished these things, and the spirit of innovation and productivity that we’ve exemplified. I’m proud that our fraternity honors our rich history every day, but we don’t rest on our laurels. We continue to look forward, to re-envision what we can do to improve ourselves and to make the world a better place. A l l a n L. C a s a l o u While pursuing these goals and many others, California Masonry has remained focused on what’s important: brotherly love, relief, and truth. We had our best overall membership year since 1978, conferring more than 13 degrees per lodge. Men are increasingly seeking out Masonry in California – and they’re also advancing. The Masonic Homes continues to provide support and relief to our most vulnerable members. We’ve located 4,444 lost members and widows and connected Masonic Outreach Services with those who need assistance. Despite tough economic times, donors dug deep to support Masonic causes, knowing their contributions would aid those who need help the most. And through community partnerships, generous member donations, and a renewed commitment to hands-on involvement, we increased our support of public schools to levels we haven’t achieved for nearly 50 years. We’re introducing new programs, such as the Inspector Development Academy and free iMember Webinars for secretaries, and tailoring training to member needs. The entire Lodge Management Certification Program became available online this year. While 215 members attended onsite, 175 others were able to participate virtually, meaning that they didn’t have to take time away from their families or spend money on travel in a tight year. Our good work is driven by lodges, and I’m also proud of the improved communication between Grand Lodge and individual lodges. We’ve increased the exchange of ideas and information at the committee and board level, with a dedicated and strong Grand Lodge staff, and through new communications vehicles like The Leader. Moving forward, we are committed to keeping these lines of communication open and working together on advancing Freemasonry in California. Thank you to the more than 6,000 California Masons as well as the many lodges and Masonic organizations for your generous contributions. While space does not allow us to list all donors, please know we are grateful for all contributions. This Annual Report recognizes donations during the period July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009. Gifts by Individuals More than 1,000 California Masons made a charitable gift of $159 or more to Masonic causes. The $159 Anniversary Level of giving represents one dollar for each year of Masonry in California and celebrates our long history of relief and charity. We thank all who generously gave individual gifts. 19 : Gift was made online Italics: Grand Master Circle level donor for three consecutive years Gold Grand Master Circle $5,000 and up Richard F.
