Review
 A singular noun names a person, place, idea, or thing.
 A plural noun names more than one person, place, idea, or thing.
The Rules
 Most plural nouns are formed by adding –s or –es.
 Add –es to form the plural of singular nouns that end in s,
sh, ch, or x.
glass  glasses
flash  flashes
bunch  bunches fox  foxes
 To form the plural of nouns ending in a consonant and the
letter y, change the y to I and add – es.
baby  babies
candy  candies
country  countries
 To form the plural of nouns ending in a vowel and y,
add – s.
turkey  turkeys
holiday  holidays
Monday – More Plural Nouns
To form the plural of some nouns ending if f or fe, change
the f to v and add –es.
leaf  leaves
life  lives
To form the plural of nouns ending in a vowel followed by
o, add –s.
radio  radios
To form the plural of nouns ending in a consonant
followed by o, add –s or –es.
jumbo  jumbos
tomato  tomatoes
Some nouns, like committee, family, group, and team,
name a group. These nouns are called collective nouns.
You consider the collective noun singular when you talk
about the group as a whole and plural when you talk about
the individual members of the group.

Tuesday – More Plural Nouns
A collective noun, such as team or class, may be
considered either singular or plural.
You consider the collective noun singular when you talk
about the group as a whole and plural when you talk about
the individual members of the group.
The team wants our support. (team, singular)
The team have gone their separate ways. (team, plural)
Special Plural Forms
Some nouns have a special plural form that does not end in –s.
mouse  mice
woman  women
child  children
Some nouns stay the same whether singular or plural.
fish  fish deer  deer

Wednesday – Appositives
Appositives tell more about the nouns they follow.
Appositive or appositive phrases that are not essential to
the meaning of a sentence should be set off by commas.

An appositive is a noun or pronoun that is placed next to
another noun or pronoun to identify or give additional
information about it. Appositives are helpful for combining
sentences.
Commas set off many appositives.
Add Information
The children visited Helena, the capital of Montana.
Combine Sentences
Original: Your hero was also a very shrewd politician. Abe
Lincoln is your hero.
Analysis: The text is repetitive. The sentences can be combined
using an appositive.
Revision: Your hero, Abe Lincoln, was also a very shrewd
politician.
