General Rules for Track Events Athletes may run or walk. Try to group the walkers together in a race and the runners together in a race. How to Administer One volunteer serves as the stager and lines-up the athletes in the proper lanes. One volunteer serves as the starter and gives the commands to start each race. One volunteer will use the command “on your mark,” “set” and, when all competitors are set, use the starting gun. General Rules for Wheelchair Races Athletes shall start with all wheels behind the start line. Athlete is timed until all front wheels (two or one) of the wheelchair reach the perpendicular plane of the nearer edge of the finish line. Motorized wheelchairs shall not be allowed in manual wheelchair races. Athletes pushed, pulled or otherwise assisted should compete separately from athletes who independently move their wheelchair. Athletes may use their hands or their feet to move their wheelchair. The lanes for the wheelchair events shall be made two track-lanes wide. General Rules for Running Long Jump Each athlete must be able to jump a minimum of one meter, which is the minimum distance between the take-off board and the sand pit. Prior to competition, athletes may have assistance from a coach to mark their take-off line. Each athlete shall be allowed three non-consecutive attempts. All three attempts shall be measured and recorded for breaking ties. The longest measurement of the three attempts shall be used for scoring. When jumping, competitors’ must jump off one foot and their toes shall be behind the takeoff board. Distance will be measured from the closest impression on the landing area made by any part of the body or limbs to the take-off line for all jumps. Competitors who take-off past the take-off board shall not receive a score for that attempt. How to Administer One volunteer serves as the recorder and calls out the names of the athletes when it is their turn to compete. One volunteer helps the athlete get into position and holds the zero end of the measuring tape. (You can secure the tape measure to the ground/mat and use a yard stick to mark where to measure.) One volunteer marks where the athlete lands and measures the distance jumped. General Rules for Softball Throw and Tennis Ball Throw Each athlete shall be allowed three non-consecutive attempts. All three attempts shall be measured and recorded for breaking ties. The longest measurement of the three attempts shall be used for scoring. Competitors may use any type of throw. The throw shall be made from behind a line. The center of the line is the point for the measurement and shall be marked where the ball lands. One volunteer holds the zero end of the tape measure where the softball landed. One volunteer pulls the tape measure to the center of the circle. One volunteer in the field retrieves the softballs. General Rules for Shot Put Men – 4 kg or 8.8 pounds Women – 3 kg or 6.6 pounds The athlete may enter the circle from any direction. The athlete must pause before you start your attempt. During the athletes attempt he/she may not touch top of the ring, the side or top of the toe board. The athlete may touch inside of the ring or the toe board. The implement must land inside of sector lines. On or outside of sector will be a foul throw. After the implement lands, you must exit out the rear half of circle after “Mark” is called. Notice the side markers. Exit on or in front of markers will be a foul. This is a shot put event. The shot may not drop below or behind the shoulder during your attempt. Keep your elbow up.
