Sofie and the Alphorn
Hans Traxler
Illustrated by: Hans Traxler
Sofie’s life is not an easy one. All of her family members are talented
flautists, but as the youngest in the family, she only ever gets to play
the mini-flute. Yet in truth Sofie is more talented than the lot of them.
Even as a baby she could play five notes on her mother’s flute. By the
age of three she could play the traditional German folk song “Cuckoo,
Cuckoo” flawlessly, and at four she was able to play a flute sonata by ear.
A child prodigy, they called her, but still no one would give her a bigger
flute. Then, one day, as she is vacationing at her aunt Gertrude’s in the
mountains, Sofie discovers the biggest flute of all. And Alois can coax
the most wonderful sounds from it! The story of how Sophie manages
to talk Alois into teaching her to play the alphorn is as surprising and

Cinnamon Travels Vol. 1
Dagmar Bach
15-year-old Victoria (“Vicky”) finds herself inexplicably “leaping” into
the body of her alter ego – a girl who looks just like her – increasingly
often and for longer intervals. From one moment to the next, she suddenly gets a whiff of cinnamon and then, unexpectedly, she is catapulted into a parallel life. The other Victoria (“Tori”) lives in the same city
and attends the same school – but this is where the similarities end. For
one thing, Tori seems to live with her father, while Vicky lives with her
mother, and she is best friends with a girl Vicky despises. She must be
much more outspoken, too! The most complicating factor is, though, that
the two girls actually exchange places during those „leaps”! Naturally,
Tori causes utter chaos in Vicky’s world. Especially when it comes to her
love life, Tori has her very own way of helping her parallel self to make
a move in the right direction...

The Magical Flower Shop (Vol. 1):
Secrets upon Secrets
Gina Mayer
Illustrated by: Joëlle Tourlonias
Violet spends her afternoons at her aunt Abigail‘s flower shop. Sensing
that there‘s a big secret there, Violet and her friends begin to make
inquiries – and discover that her aunt owns an ancient magical flower
book and uses her flower magic to make people happy. Violet wants to
do that, too. Her first mission: making a match between her shy maths
teacher and her sports teacher. Using “Wondrous Lovage,” that should
be easy – but initially, everything goes wrong. Luckily, Auntie Abigail
comes to the rescue, and a few drops of “Blue-Speckled Castor Extract”
set things right again. However, Violet has a second emergency to take
care of: her classmate Fiorella. She‘s an amazing pianist, but she‘s not
happy. With the help of “Harsh Purple Loosestrife,” Fiorella dares to
rebel against her mother and tell her that she doesn‘t want to be a child
prodigy anymore…
Bonus recipe at the end of the book: Auntie Abigail‘s Secret Recipe for
Caramel-Lavender Sweets!
About the series: For nine-year-old Violet, there is no better place than
her Auntie Abigail‘s flower shop in a small British town. Both of them
share a special gift: with the aid of a book of ancient flower recipes that
only Violet and her aunt can read, they use flowers to heal and help
people. Over the course of the series, Violet is introduced to the secret
flower magic. In each self-contained volume, she solves a major problem
- though of course not without a few hiccups. Her friends, twins Jack
(Jaqueline) and Zack, everyday life at school, and cheeky animals play
important roles as well.

All About Wheels - From Carriages to Fast Cars
Illustrated by: Ali Mitgutsch
For more than five thousand years, wheels and all the inventions that
have sprung from them have played a huge part in human history. The
original 1975 edition of Ali Mitgutsch‘s “All About Wheels” was a new
type of book, the story-telling nonfiction picture book, and arose in close cooperation with the German Museum in Munich. Beginning with
rolling tree trunks and then solid and spoked wheels, and on to the development of carriages, bicycles, the first steam engines and motorization, Mitgutsch provides countless vignettes big and small, in words and
images, about one of the most important discoveries humankind ever
made. There is always an element of humour, and myriad details, some
of them quite incredible. The main focus, however, is humans and our
innate drive to discover, research, and invent – the same drive children
have. Young researchers are transported into the world of 40 years ago,
a time when their parents might have been children.

Robots. Braniacs and Strong Helpers
Dr. Bernd Flessner
Long ago, the ancient Greeks were already dreaming of “artificial people” who would make work easier for them. In science fiction stories
and films of the future they have long since become good friends of
mankind, or, in some cases, its worst enemies – robots.
Today they are used everywhere in the world, from car factories to libraries. They carry out surgery in hospitals and take care of patients. As
a Mars rover, they explore the red planet and the deep-sea as a diving
robot. Drones and robotic cars operate aircraft and vehicles without human help. But how does a robot function? What tasks can it perform and
what are its limits? The new WAS IST WAS („how and why“) volume reveals how a robot can, for example, unscrew a jar of jam, and that since
1996, there has been a robot soccer world championship.

Dr. Manfred Baur

Were dinosaurs intelligent? Did dinosaur mothers protect their young?
How fast could the giant lizards run? This WAS IST WAS („how and
why“) edition takes readers on a fascinating journey back into the era
of the dinosaurs – wiped out forever 65 million years ago by a massive
natural disaster.

WAS IST WAS Kindergarten
The Forest
Andrea Weller-Essers
Illustrated by: Heike Vogel
Why are there constantly new trees in a forest? Where do squirrels
sleep? And which animals are only active after dark?
Like every volume in the nonfiction series, “WAS IST WAS Kindergarten,” for children aged three years and up, this book begins with a typical scene in kindergarten. The children sit on chairs arranged in a
circle and take a closer look at the leaves and branches of various trees.
Then a discovery expedition into the forest begins. The book’s colorful,
cheerful design and its many discovery flaps invite the kids to take a
closer look, and notice all kinds of details. At the end of the book, the
kindergarten children assign the items they have found to the respective seasons of the year.
With exciting extra information, simple experiments and great craft
ideas, “WAS IST WAS Kindergarten” conveys expert knowledge in a
highly entertaining way.

Polly Pookie Cookie –
The girl with the perfect bite!
Lucy Astner
Illustrated by: Lisa Hänsch
Until recently, Polly was a perfectly ordinary little girl. But ever since
that stupid incisor fell out everything has been different. No: everything
has been downright crazy! For the tooth now emerging is not an ordinary tooth – it‘s a truly genuine vampire tooth. And Polly is not an
ordinary little girl anymore, but a vampire girl. When she is angry she
is suddenly so strong that she can flick that nasty Marvin Kowalke through the air like a bit of snot. Polly thinks it is amazing that vampires
have magical powers, but she is less amused by the fact that she has
to pass an exam supervised by the council of dormice before she can
go and live with her family again. And so Polly leaves her home on the
Baltic Sea, her best friend Leni and her beloved ponies Goulash and
Soup to go and stay with Aunt Winnie in Hamburg to prepare for the
dormouse exam. Winnie is certainly the funniest aunt in the world, but
Polly nevertheless first finds Hamburg downright stupid: the enchanted
houseboat, the new school, horrid Greta, the silly old history competition and of course Paul, who is determined to be Polly‘s best friend. How
Polly longs to be an ordinary little girl again, without a vampire tooth
and magic powers- if only she was able to go back home again! Luckily
Eagle Eye is around, the speaking bat. He may be as blind as a one-eyed
mole, but he makes Polly see that sometimes it is worth being just a
little bit different …

the orphanage. And all because of one nut she shouldn‘t have touched.

stairs, and when she hears voices, she hides in a cupboard. Then the
