On June 28, 1914, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz

Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie paid a state visit to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia. The
royal pair was assassinated. The killer was Gavrilo Princip, a 19-year-old Serbian and
member of the Black Hand.
Austria decided to use the murders as an excuse to punish Serbia. Austria presented

Serbia with an ultimatum; however Austria was in no mood to negotiate. On July 28,
Austria blamed Serbia for Ferdinand’s death so Austria rejected Serbia’s offer
and declared war.
Russia had pledged their support for Serbia. In response to Austria’s declaration of
war, Russia, Serbia’s ally, began moving its army toward the Russian-Austrian
border. Expecting Germany to join Austria, Russia also mobilized along the German
border.

Germany had pledged their support for Austria-Hungary. To Germany, Russia’s
mobilization amounted to a declaration of war. On August 1, the German government
declared war on Russia.

Russia looked to its ally France for help. France pledges their support for Russia.
Germany, however, did not even want for France to react. Two days after declaring war
on Russia, Germany also declared war on France.
