We ask you to join us IN SUPPORTING BETH O’DONNELL’S PLEDGE TO BUILD THE MATHARE MOTHERS DEVELOPMENT CENTRE In 2002, after spending several years aiding in seven different African countries, activist, photographer, artist and GROOTS Kenya supporter, Beth O’Donnell visited the struggling Mathare Mothers Development Centre. After witnessing the gravity of the centre’s needs, Beth pledged to build a new structure. Concerned by the deaths of children left alone in slum villages by single working mothers, Rose Auma and GROOTS Kenya opened the Mathare Mothers Development Centre to care for the neglected children. The centre, despite being a gift to the local community, is currently a dilapidated structure in great need of renovation and modernization. The building of the Mathare Mothers Development Centre will ensure the safety of the vulnerable mothers and children in the Mathare slum, Nairobi, Kenya. Our goal is to build a structure that has the capabilities to improve the lives of the local mothers and children. Without your support and the help of GROOTS Kenya, the new centre will not be possible. GROOTS Kenya is a network of community organizations and self-help groups for women in Kenya, that was formed in response to the inadequate visibility of women in decision-making forums that directly impact them and their communities. They work with more than 2,000 local groups to assist in the development of sustainable local initiatives. With the help of GROOTS Kenya, local women who lose a husband to HIV/AIDS avoid being stripped of their homes and possessions, being denied their inheritance rights and being forced to live on the streets. GROOTS Kenya is able to provide these women with entrepreneurial opportunities, protect their inheritance rights and offer urgently needed health care, which helps to combat famine, poverty, illiteracy and AIDS. Please join us in making Beth’s pledge come true. The Mathare mothers represent hope for Africa’s future, and are a testimony to the courageous and resilient spirit of women worldwide. We appreciate your support.
