Back to School: Prayer for the Start of the School Year
Loving God, Our creator, our saviour, our companion,
bless this journey of a new school year that we undertake today.
Refresh our souls and renew our spirits as we embrace
the beautiful ministry you have called us to.
We welcome those who are new to this community and ask that you strengthen them to
share the wonderful gifts you have given them.
Lord, make our hearts pure as we prepare for the return of students to this school, and
may you guide them to return
with open hearts and minds eager to learn.
We ask this in Your name,
Amen
WELCOME to the 2014 school year! It is a year ahead full of promise and hope for all the good things that
happen in a school – teaching and learning, social events, meeting and greeting new friends and renewing
friendships. May every College family experience a year that brings much joy and satisfaction.
There are quite a number of new students who have arrived at St Aloysius to start the new year. We
welcome each of them and wish them every blessing for the coming year. We also welcome back many,
many familiar faces at the College. I hope that your holidays were memorable for you.

COLLEGE UNIFORM
All students are required to wear the correct uniform. (The Student Uniform and Personal Appearance
Policy can be found on our website.) Please ensure that ALL items of uniform are clearly named.
Kindergarten students wear our PE uniform, as do all other students on their designated PE days or as
may be required for excursions.
The formal uniform is to be worn at all times by Prep – Grade 10 students. Grades 5 – 10 students are
expected to wear their blazers to and from school, the exception being on very hot days when they are
required to carry their blazers with them.
Black school shoes, not sports shoes are to be worn with the formal uniform. School shoes should be
sturdy and supportive footwear. ‘Ballet’ type flat shoes are not to be worn by girls, as they do not provide
sufficient support for their feet.
Fluorescent coloured sports shoes are not to be worn at school.
Students are not to wear make-up, including mascara, at school.
COLLEGE NEWSLETTER
This first edition of the weekly newsletter is being issued to all families as a paper copy. From next week,
as is our established practice, the newsletter will be available via email and our website
www.staloysius.tas.edu.au
A small number of paper copies will be available at both Campus Offices from next week.
To receive a quick link to the weekly newsletter, you are asked to email [email protected] with the
subject title NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIBE.
Please contact Mrs Rachael Adams/Miss Simone Reynolds at the Huntingfield Campus Office on 6220
0100 if you have any queries about the College Newsletter.
Distribution of College Notices
As you are aware, last year we sought feedback from parents, including ways to improve processes at the
College. A consistent comment from parents was around the number of notices that are sent home in
hard copy.
This year, we will trial putting all notices under the 'Community' section of the College website
(www.staloysius.tas.edu.au). While we hope that parents will check the website for notices regularly, in
the short term we will send an email to parents every Friday, listing the notices that have been included on
the website in the previous week. Notices that require a form to be completed will be sent home in hard
copy but will also be included on the website in the hope that they will reach most parents.
To assist with this revised process, it is imperative that each family provides an up to date email
address as soon as possible. If your email details change, could you please advise the College of your
new email address as soon as possible.
We look forward to your feedback after we have embedded this new process.

If a student’s absence is to be of a long duration, parents/guardians are requested to inform the Principal
in writing.
Parents/guardians are asked not to arrange appointments for their children during school time, as this

Dear Friends of the College,
Welcome back to 2014!
I’m sitting at my Office waiting to go out on Bus Duty for the first day and looking forward to seeing the
students arrive. If they’re anything like me, they probably aren’t used to waking up so early in the
mornings!
Over the holidays, to the disappointment of my wife, I’ve watched a lot of cricket – especially the Big
Bash. The Hobart Hurricanes, after a really slow start, did well to beat the Melbourne Stars last Monday
night. At yesterday’s Welcome Assembly I spoke to the students about three lessons to learn from the
Hobart Hurricanes:
(Life or) the game of cricket owes you nothing. Just because the Melbourne Stars won all the
preliminary games, ended on top of the ladder and hosted the semi-final, that doesn’t mean a win
in the semi! (Life and) Each cricket game is a series of new pages and if you bring your best to it,
you might just win against the odds!
Lesson #1: Do your best in life’s multitude of opportunities.
•
Sometimes, like Tim Paine getting in trouble about what he had to say to Eddie Maguire, you
make mistakes. Realise that everyone does! When you do, take stock of the situation, work out
what would be the best next move to make, isolate the people who can help you in that next
move and then make it. Just like Tim Paine went out kept well, batted well and contributed to the
Hurricanes win.
Lesson #2: View setbacks as opportunities and remember to make your next move with confidence.
•
• Although I love the Hurricanes…
Lesson #3: Not everyone looks good in purple.
Have a great year (and go the Purple Haze!)

WELCOME
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome existing and new students, parents and staff to the
Kingston Campus for 2014. 2014 looks to be an exciting year for the Campus. Our numbers have grown
significantly, exciting capital works will be undertaken and we are planning a number of important
initiatives in response to staff, parent and student feedback from 2013.
BUS AGREEMENTS
Bus Agreements were sent home on Friday 7 December. We are asking that parents discuss the Student
Bus Safety Agreement with their child/children and return the signed section attached to the Kingston
Campus College Office by Friday 14th February. Please retain the copy of the agreement and expectations
for your own records.
VOLUNTEERS IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
It is a requirement that all volunteers, including parent help, at St Aloysius Catholic College complete a
Police Check. The forms of consent to check and release Tasmanian and National Police Records are
available from the Kingston Campus Office.
PARKING
Could all parents please be aware that the driveway in front of the office at Kingston is not to be used as a
thoroughfare by parents for dropping off, picking up or parking. We are very aware of the need to keep
the children in our care safe and for this reason the area is designated for staff parking only.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS
All students arriving at school before 8.25am are reminded that they must wait on the asphalt area outside
the Grade Three classrooms unless accompanied by their parent or guardian.
Classrooms open at 8.25am, and this is signalled by the school bell. Parents are welcome to enter the
classroom at this time. Please note, due to the busy nature of the morning, it is not a good time for a
parent/teacher conference, but it is a good time to book one with your child’s teacher! Classes
commence formally at 8.40am.
Classes conclude at 2.55pm (2.40pm for Kindergarten). In order to ensure the safety of all students after
school, we are asking that students who are not picked up by 3.05pm wait at the front office where they
can be adequately supervised. Parents are to pick students up from this area. It is extremely important
that students waiting for parents are not playing on any equipment, as there is no teacher supervision in
the playground after school.

The Betta Bee Wall of Fame - The Honeycomb
At St Aloysius Catholic College - Kingston Campus we actively teach and reinforce desired behaviour. We
have four main expectations of behaviour: Be a Learner, Be Safe, Be Fair and Be Respectful. The four B’s
are consistently reinforced throughout the Campus and we have a very special mascot Betta Bee, who
assists with reinforcing these expectations. During the first weeks of school, each class will be working
with their teachers to develop an understanding of what the 4 B’s look like in different ways in our school.
Last year, we introduced Betta-Bee cards as part of our positive behaviour support program. This was a
very successful initiative. Class teachers and specialist staff will be handing out Betta-Bee cards to
students exhibiting desired 4 B’s behaviour. The table above clearly explains to staff, students and
parents the current reward system

TOP TIPS FOR BACK TO SCHOOL
Start your routines again as soon as you can. Getting back to school-day bedtimes is a good place to
start. Decide on a school-day routine and stick to it.
Try to prepare in advance. Then you won’t be in a panic assembling books and gear at the last minute
and your children will be equipped for their school day.
Be prepared for back-to-school blues. Changing from the relaxed and lazy days of summer is hard on
all the family but if your child seems too worried or stressed, find out what is wrong and see what you and
the school can do to help.
Talk about change. Whether it is a new school, or a change in your family’s circumstances, make time to
talk about any fears or worries. Accompany your child so they can get used to the new journey.
Your child may be worried about losing friends who are going to a different school or about making
new friends. Talk about ways children can gradually make new friends.
Tell your child you are excited for them and the year ahead. If your child is about to start an important
year such as the first year at secondary school, they may need reassurance.
Address any problems left over from last term. If your child has experienced bullying or has had
problems at school, discuss what they want to happen this year and how they can achieve their goals.
Be prepared to give them a bit of leeway for the first week. School can be a long day for children and
when they are out of practice it can be exhausting. Early bedtimes and a regular routine are helpful.
Celebrate the first week back. Have a family outing or meal or other treat to regroup and talk about the
week.
