February 13-14 2016 AMA Kick Off
March 14-15 American Bishops’
Overseas Appeal (Catholic Relief
Services) & Church in Latin America
(National)
AMA 2016; Together, We Proclaim God’s Merciful Love
The Diocese Annual Ministry Appeal will begin next weekend. This year, the
diocese assessment for St. Patrick’s is $24,400. Our parish goal is $100,000.
Your support of the diocese continues to help provide the valuable programs
and services from which we all benefit. However, $75,000 will be used right
here at our parish to help fund the church roof repairs that need to be made.
We will keep you informed of the repairs needed on the roof.
If you helped last year, you will receive a letter from Bishop Richard Garcia,
please remove and return attached form for your pledge this year.
“Please pray and ponder how we can help this parish and the diocese.”
Stewardship Reflection
You might say today’s Scripture readings are filled with three important facets of
stewardship — humility, discipleship, and the grace and presence of God. Holy
Scripture has messages and meaning for us at every Mass, but we need to take
particular note of the implications in today’s readings.
The First Reading from the prophet Isaiah relates how Isaiah personally responded
to the calling he received from God. His initial reaction was one of unworthiness and
humility: “I am a man of unclean lips.” In other words, Isaiah is saying, “I cannot
serve you God for I am a sinner.” However, when the Lord calls someone, that call is
accompanied by the strength and presence of God to allow that sinner, including all
of us who are sinners as well, to carry out the Lord’s will. God tells Isaiah, “Your
wickedness is removed; your sin purged.”
Isaiah responds in the same way we are expected to answer: “Here I am; send me.”
Are we prepared in our humility and knowledge of our own weaknesses to take a
similar risk, to trust in God?
St. Paul seems to reflect the same reticence found in Isaiah, when Paul says in the
Second Reading from the First Letter to the Corinthians, “For I am the least of the
apostles, not fit to be called an apostle.” Those of us who have become familiar with
Paul throughout our lives because of his wonderful letters, which we hear most often
in the Second Readings, probably have a similar reaction to Paul’s sense of being
undeserving. We know how worthy Paul really is nonetheless.
However, just as Isaiah comes to a revelation relating to his calling, Paul, too,
recognizes from where his strength can be drawn. Paul exclaims, “But by the grace of
God I am what I am.” St. Paul was converted; he was a changed man, forgiven,
cleansed, and full of love which at one time was hate. Paul knew this was not his own
accomplishment, but it was owing to the presence of God within him.
There is a line in an old hymn which goes, “You ask me how I know He lives; He
lives; He lives inside my heart.” Once we reach that same conclusion, we can be
prepared to look past our own value to the power and resolve God makes available to
each of us.
Of course, the feeling that someone is of no value is equally telling in the words of
St. Peter in today’s Gospel from St. Luke: “Depart from me Lord for I am a sinful
man.” Jesus reacts to Peter’s exclamation by saying “Do not be afraid.” As is normally
the case with Holy Scripture and with things the Lord says and does, there is a
significant meaning here we may miss. Jesus is trying to inform Peter and us that He
wants to relate to us on the principle of love, not the principle of fear.
Our conclusion is that though we are not worthy, the Lord loves us. Though we
think we may be unable to properly respond to Jesus’ call to us, the truth is that with
God’s help not only can we take positive action, but that we can know that God will
not let us fail. The Lord will show us the way, but we must be willing to take those
first steps ourselves.

BIBLE STUDY – WOMEN IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
On February 11, we will be starting a new series on the bible. This is an
8 session course about what it means to be touched by Jesus, and the
meaning of discipleship through the lives of the women who lived in the
first generation of Christianity.
Meetings are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month. Each
session lasts 90 minutes. This course will conclude on June 9th. Cost
of materials for the course is $10. Signups are at the parish office.
Come join us as we explore the foundations of our faith.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!
“Holy, holy, holy!” Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used in the scriptures, did
not always have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah could not say God
was “holiest,” so he used the threefold repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae about these “three little words” that we sing at every Mass serves as a
reminder that answering God’s call has to be grounded in awareness of God’s holiness. In Isaiah and in the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the revelation of
God’s power and might: the seraphim in the temple and the miraculous catch of fish.
These are not wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a response in
mission, Isaiah’s “Here I am, send me!” and the disciples’ leaving everything to follow Jesus. And so must our own “Holy, Holy, Holy!” lead us to Christ in the Eucharist
every Sunday, and to a life following him day by day.

Pescador, que al pasar por la
orilla del lago
Me viste secando mis redes al sol.
Tu mirar se cruzó
con mis ojos cansados
Y entraste en mi vida
buscando mi amor.
Pescador, en mis manos
Has puesto otras redes
Que puedan ganarte
la pesca mejor,
Y al llevarme contigo en la barca,
Me nombraste, Señor, pescador.
Pescador, entre tantos
que había en la playa,
Tus ojos me vieron. Tu boca me
habló. Y a pesar
de sentirse mi cuerpo cansado,
Mis pies en la arena
siguieron tu voz.
Pescador, manejando mis
Artes de pesca en otras riberas
Mi vida quedó.
Al querer que por todos los
mares del mundo trabajen mis
fuerzas por Ti, pescador.
Pescador, mi trabajo de toda la

encontró. Pero Tu, que conoces los
mares profundos, compensas si
quieres mi triste labor.
