On Monday 30 January with all the
boarders back from Exeat, Mrs Thomas
cooked a very special Chinese meal to
celebrate Chinese New Year. Eric even got
most of the others to try using chop-sticks!
He also explained what the celebration means
to the Chinese community and how they
would celebrate back in China.
At the weekend some of the boarders went to Salisbury for the
afternoon. They were all very impressed by the size of the Cathedral,
but less so with the ' best preserved' Magna Carta. (Only four copies
of Magna Carta, Latin for Great Charter, dating from 1215 have
survived the ravages of time and Salisbury Cathedral is proud to be
home to the best preserved original manuscript). As is often the way,
several were just as impressed with Mr Simms Olde Sweet
Shoppe, where Jacob spent ages undecided; 4 ounces of
sherbet lemon or a carton of toxic waste! Mrs Witcomb
What a lovely evening;
the boarders laughing
and having fun
together at Romsey
Rapids. Brilliant!

BOWLING BONANZA!
Another really enjoyable night out with
the boarders, and a nail-biting finish.
Toby had the highest score with the
barriers down.

County Swimming Championships
On Sat 28 January Toby
Fotheringham (Yr 9) and Joshua
Armstrong (Yr 8) attended the
county swimming championships in
Portsmouth. Both boys have been
training hard and were very excited
but apprehensive. To qualify for the
event both boys had to achieve
specific county times. This weekend
focused on relays. Toby was very
proud as he achieved personal best
times in both the freestyle and
backstroke. He celebrated by buying
a gold county hat! Joshua was a little
disappointed by his times following
his gold medal in the National ISA
Swimming event on 21 Jan where he
swam in the Olympic pool. We are so
proud of your achievements boys
and look forward to hearing the
results of the individual events next
weekend. Miss Brown
Netball Win
On Tuesday the 31 of January the Year Eight Girls’ Netball
Team took a trip to Harroway School for an exciting and
competitive match. With our team Captain Amy Knudson
playing centre, we had a flying start, along with repetitive
and skilful goal scoring by both Olivia Schneider (Goal
Shooter) and Tilly Buchele (Goal Attack). We won the
first two games and drew the third. The overall score was
14-7 to Rookwood!
Alice Strafford was chosen as the Umpire’s player of the
match, for her good use of space and improved footwork
and Amy Knudsen was awarded the opposition’s player
of the match. Despite the harsh weather, we were
delighted to get another win for the team. The key to the
victory was our dedicated training and great teamwork.
After retaining the lead in this match, the team agreed
that this was definitely our best played and most
enjoyable match of the season to date. Going forward,
we hope to grow in confidence and build on our success.

Santa’s Squash Success!
One of the many new ECAs this
year which has taken off is
Squash. Numbers are very
healthy, and some even asked
Santa for a Squash racket this
Christmas. Each Monday
afternoon we go over to Tidworth
leisure centre and run through
some drills before playing
matches. In what has been a very
short space of time you can
already see the
improvement.

The Ballad of the Japanese Tsunami
Abraham Lincoln’s
assassination on April 14th
1865
A night at the theatre
with his wife on a date.
How could he know
who lay in wait?
The 16th President went to a play,
got shot in the head
and died the next day.
With blood on his clothes
and in his long hair.
John Wilkes Booth looked down
without a care.
The 16th President went to a play,
got shot in the head
and died the next day.
The day in March was sunny and bright.
My sister and I had had a fight.
We went to school without a word,
when all of a sudden a rumbling we heard.
The teachers me us with panic on their
faces.
They told us under our desk was a safe
place.
The rumbles and crumbles were a
deafening sound,
the earthquake had shaken and cracked
the ground.
I saw a house come drifting past,
confused I went to the window fast.
A huge wave racing towards our school,
water around my feet began to pool.
As his body lay still
tears were shed
Hope of freedom
was all but dead.
My teacher says, “run go outside to the
hill!”
I was aware tsunamis could kill.
It was all in slow motion; something hit my
head.
My sister was with me and now she’s dead.
The 16th President went to a play,
got shot in the head
and died the next day.
