THANK YOU for your interest in this Learn
Local patch partnering with Tu Nidito. The
name Tu Nidito is Spanish and means “your
little nest” and this organization has been
helping children (and in turn, families) in
Tucson for over twenty years. Here is a link to
a brief history of the organization:
tunidito.org/about-us/history
Some of the activities in this patch program
will be led by you, the Troop Leader, and
some will be led by the trained staff and
volunteers at Tu Nidito. Don’t worry; you
don’t need to be an expert in grief and loss to
help your girls work toward this patch!
There are 3 main goals for girls when
completing this patch:
1
2
3
Discover what grief and loss mean
Develop empathy skills for friends who
are grieving
Become knowledgeable of support
(what Tu Nidito is, what they offer, and
how they help)
In preparation to work through the
components of this patch program, we ask
that all levels take on the ‘before you visit’
steps on the next page. There’s even a step
or two for you as the Troop Leader.
LEADERS, BEFORE YOU BEGIN WITH YOUR
GIRLS, YOU SHOULD COMPLETE THESE
STEPS YOURSELF.
1
Visit the Tu Nidito website
www.tunidito.org
REQUIREMENTS DO ALL:
Look for things to point out to your
girls when you visit the website together.
In particular, view the Tour a Room pages.
Compile a list of questions such as “What
about this room would help you share your
feelings?” or “What do you think happens in
this room?”
- AND---------------------------------View this video based on the work of
Brene’ Brown

webhp?sourceid=chromeinstant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF8#q=brene%20brown%20empathy
- AND---------------------------------Let parents know that you’ll be talking with
girls at an upcoming meeting about grief and
loss and fill out a ‘sensitive issues’ permission
slip for your records.

Remember: Don’t do for girls what they can do
for themselves. If there are elements of this
patch program that are listed as a ‘to do’ for
the leader, but your girls can do it… let them!
LEADER
LEARNING
1
Meet with your girls and do the
following:
REQUIREMENTS DO ALL:
Cadette
Troop 347
with Debbie
Rich, CEO,
Girl Scouts
of Southern
Arizona, 2015
Sit in circle and ask girls to share their ideas
about what feelings humans often experience
when they lose a pet or someone important to
them. Encourage conversation and all ideas.
Ask girls if they have ever had difficulty knowing
what to say to someone who has experienced
a loss. What was that like? Leaders may share
their own experience if girls don’t readily come
up with an example.
- AND---------------------------------Do some research with your girls about the
history and traditions of talking sticks. (Older girls
can do it themselves with a bit of help). Discuss
how you might use a talking stick in your troop
to help conduct troop business. Ask girls if/how
they think it might help. Find pictures of examples
on the internet, or borrow one from tnevels@
girlscoutssoaz.org to show at your meetings.
With your girls, plan and make a talking stick for
your troop. Be sure to take your troop’s talking
stick with you when you visit Tu Nidito to show
and find out how they are used there.
