NEW CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ROBOTICS
ATI DEPARTMENT OBTAINS A VALUABLE PATENT
The year 1954 is considered the official “date of birth” of the industrial
robot, the year George Devol submitted the first patent for an industrial robot:
U.S. Patent 2,988,237. Devol's invention is considered one of the top 60
inventions during the last 60 years.
Since then, robotics has evolved spectacularly; present‐day robots
amaze us with their performances, by what they can do. The robot is seen as the
materialization of researchers' imagination; it is a remarkable human‐made
technical product, a sophisticated automated system.
Research in the field of robotics has been a continuous preoccupation
with the Department of Automation and Information Technology (ATI) of
Transilvania University of Braşov, and with the Research Centre C09‐Systems for
process control within the PRO‐DD Institute.
On the 60th anniversary of the industrial robot this year, the Department of Automation and Information Technology (ATI) of our
University was granted the RO 129121 (A0) patent, Method and installation for programmeming the motion paths of robotic arm
articulations, author: Dr Aurel Fratu. The summary of the RO 129121 (A0) patent is published on the site of the European Patent
Office: http://worldwide.espacenet.com
The idea protected by this patent covers the combination of the off‐line and on‐line programmeming methods used in the
virtual environment, on the one hand, and the real physical environment for the programmeming of industrial robots, on the other. This
method and its software can be applied to any type of robotic arm.

THE NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS DAYS 2014 CONFERENCE
THE FACULTY OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE SHOWCASING
THEIR OUTPUT
Dedicated to engineers, researchers, teachers and students from Romania, the NI Days 2014 Conference was held on 15
October in Bucharest. This was an occasion to showcase new and exciting applications developed by using the concept of graphical
system development in the fields of teaching and industry.
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and its Research Department within the R&D Institute of the
University were represented by 26 students and two professors who introduced two applications ‐ one educational, the other industrial
‐ to the audience of the plenary session, and made a good impression with the exhibition stand displaying products made within the
faculty.
The participation of students was aimed at opening of new vistas, interacting with users of state‐of‐the‐art equipment and
tools designed for testing, measurement, embedded control and RF, as
well as at facilitating interaction with the industrial environment. The
students also had the opportunity to take part in the workshops organized
within the framework of the conference and also had a chance to use the
latest equipment offered by National Instruments.
The organizers on behalf of the faculty take this opportunity to
extend their thanks to the management of our university for their kind
support, especially to Dr Carmen Gerigan, Dean of the Faculty
of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, as well as to Dr
Munteanu Daniel, Vice‐rector.

PAEDIATRIC INFECTIOUS DISEASES COURSE
FROM THE INTERRELATION BETWEEN VIRUSES AND BACTERIA TO THE
EFFECTS OF VACCINES
The 7th course organized by ESPID (European Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases) and the 6th East‐European and
Mediterranean Teaching Course on Paediatric Infectious Diseases took place at Transilvania University, on 14 and 15 November,
hosted by the Faculty of Medicine and its Resrarch Department within the ICDT Institute. The course was targeted at paediatricians,
epidemiologists, general practitioners, diagnostic physicians, interns, resident physicians and students.
The main objectives of this course were to recognize infectious diseases in paediatrics patients, to determine the diagnostic
criteria for these diseases, their potential for evolution, to choose the right therapeutic treatment plan, as well as to discuss the most
recent studies on the effects of vaccination on the paediatric population.
The course gathered participants from Israel, Great Britain, Canada, Taiwan, Greece, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Spain,
but also teaching staff from the Universities of Medicine in Bucharest, Iaşi, Cluj and Craiova.
The conference was attended by the President of the European Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases, Professor Ronald de
Groot, who lectured on the impact of severe infectious diseases on clinical research.
Various general interest topics were approached, such as the interrelation between
viruses and bacteria, the influence of nutrition on the evolution of infectious diseases, the
emergence of new viruses like the noroviruses, the increase in the number of cases of certain
diseases like meningococcal infections on children under the age of two, the effects of
vaccines on the prescription of antibiotics and on severe diseases.
The discussions included presentations of clinical cases which raised lively debates
on the best therapeutic course of action for these patients and possible preventative
measures.

CONFERENCE FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY, 4TH EDITION
SOLUTIONS FOR NEARLY ZERO ENERGY BUILDINGS
Between 6 and 9 November, the R&D Institute of Transilvania University of Brașov played host to the 4th edition of the
Conference for Sustainable Energy, CSE. Each of the previous editions focused on highly topical issues, and this year's edition was no
exception: it focused on new, feasible, efficient and sustainable solutions for the promotion and implementation of nZEBs (Nearly Zero
Energy Buildings). The current European and Romanian legislation stipulates that starting with 2019, all new buildings occupied or
owned by public authorities will have to be buildings with 50% energy consumption from renewable sources.
Originating from nine countries, the participants presented their contributions both in plenary and panel sessions, and opened
paths for debates which eventually led to setting new partnerships in view of approaching the interdisciplinary aspects of the topic.
Well‐known field specialists delivered plenary presentations focusing mainly on the official EU position regarding the promotion of
sustainable energy in education and research (Paola Mazzucchelli, EUREC General Secretary), the increase in acceptance of solar
conversion systems (Istvan Farkas, ISES President, Hungary and Nikolai Mihailov, Bulgaria), the use of photocatalysis as alternative for
reducing energy consumption in buildings (Elias Statatos, Greece),
eco‐design and the use of waste as secondary raw material for
low‐carbon footprint products (Richard Morris, Great Britain and
Ludvig Cardon, Belgium), or socio‐economic issues (Yoram
Kroezer, The Netherlands), all of them targeting the development
of sustainable communities (Ion Vișa, Romania).
Following an international peer‐review process, the
proceedings were published at Springer International Publishing.
