New Job, New Challenges
DESMA TODAY met Marten Beiersdorf,
Head of Sales
Dear Reader,
It’s the season of coughs, colds and sneezes
here in Achim, but that’s no reason to stop
us all looking forward with optimism. And
that’s what this issue of DESMA TODAY is all
about. We are kept fit and on our toes here
by the presence of our apprentices, young
people who have chosen to complete their
training with us here at DESMA. The German
training system is famed for its solid reliance
on traditional skills and we are proud of our
exceptionally high quota of apprentices, of
over 10 % of our workforce.

As many of you will have heard, business
continues to boom here in Achim. Our full
order books give us confidence to plan longterm and invest personnel and effort in interesting projects with various partners.
By the time you have this magazine in your
hands, we hope that spring will be here – at
least in Europe. And that we will all have
shaken off colds and flu. But wherever you
are, we hope this issue will give you just a
taste of the optimism which is our feeling
for 2013.

EVERY SHOE BETTER THAN ITS PREDECESSOR

ith a company history reaching back
over 140 years, Legero, based in Graz
in Austria, is proud of its insistence on sustainability, its care for both its employees in
Europe and Asia and the environment.
An important factor in Legero’s choice of
DESMA machinery? Dieter Bade, DESMA
Sales, knows the answer. “Competence!”
Europe, sold in over 40 countries worldwide,
with sales of over 3.5 million pairs produced
by over 700 employees in 2011. This success has not come by chance. It’s been a long,
intensive learning process which has led to
Superfit supervising and monitoring every
single step of the development of a shoe –
from the design to series production – leaving nothing to chance.
The company produces on a total of four
DESMA production lines and one so-called
Lab-line. This special, smaller line enables
the company to run tests and trials onsite in
Graz. The results can be then transferred to
plants worldwide.
Both PU and TPU machinery were installed
in summer 2011 and are up and running;
automation projects are in the pipeline for
early 2013.
The company is famed for its range of children’s shoes; “Superfit”, market leader in
From the beginning, 30 years ago, Superfit
has worked together with doctors and orthopaedic surgeons to ensure footwear which
provides the very best for children’s feet.
Now the company works together with orthopaedic paediatricians from the University Clinic of Graz, working constantly on
improvements and refinements.

a huge responsibility – but that’s one that
Legero is glad to face. < |

forces are required. This allows for the use of
economical moulds made of aluminium.
In the beginning… In previous rubber sole
manufacturing processes the pre-assembled
rubber bars were vulcanised with the help
of a manually-operated process. A production unit type, used throughout the world,
was the rubber vulcanising press DESMA
203/204, used for mono-layered rubber direct soling. Some of these vulcanising presses are still in use to this day.

With the introduction of the injection pouring process important steps have been made
towards economy and consistence of quality
in the production of direct soled shoes and
the manufacture of soles. The know-how
collected from the sales of all these rubber
injection machines led to the development
of the DESMA rubber pouring technique
DESflow®, whereby relatively low clamping
With the direct-soling process the labourintensive adhesion of the sole to the upper
becomes unnecessary. The sole material is
pressed directly to the upper by the injection unit. With bi-layered direct soling, the
base of the shoe consists of a compact and
resistant outsole and a lighter foamed midsole. This combination creates a shoe which
is both tough and comfortable. The elastic
sole is air- and watertight.
DESMA offers the shoe manufacturer a
comprehensive technical consultation on
processing techniques for the industrial and
economical processing of rubber. It is possi-

DESMA TODAY met MARTEN BEIERSDORF, HEAD OF SALES
DT: How long have you been at DESMA?
MB: I began here in 1998 as an apprentice.
DT: And at DESMA ever since?
MB: Not quite. After finishing my apprenticeship I went to University in Hannover and
then worked for the Continental Contitech
company, in the Sales Department.
DT: So when did you find your way back to
Achim?
MB: In 2007 I rejoined the company as Sales
Manager for the DESMA Tec division, specializing in selling technical systems to industrial customers.
DT: What are you looking forward to in your
new job?
MB: Well I’ve always been very customer-focused. Now I’ll be organizing and coordinating with colleagues here.
DT: What’s special about DESMA?
MB: We’ve got great products and a wonderful team both here in Achim and around the
world.
DT: And what do you do to relax?
MB: I’ve got two small children and love
spending my free time with them – as a family we love sailing on the River Weser. < |
