Organizing
Comprehending
1) Slow down!
2) Take notes.
3) Focus on
what s
important.
There is a crime here that goes beyond
denunciation. There is a sorrow here that
weeping cannot symbolize. There is a
failure here that topples all our success.
The fertile earth, the straight tree rows, the
sturdy trunks, and the ripe fruit. And
children dying of pellagra must die
because a profit cannot be taken from an
orange. And coroners must fill in the
certificates--died of malnutrition--because
the food must rot, must be forced to rot…
and in the eyes of the people there is a
failure; and in the eyes of the hungry there
is a growing wrath. In the souls of the
people the grapes of wrath are filling and
growing heavy, growing heavy for the
vintage.
Comprehending
1) Slow down!
2) Take notes.
3) Focus on
what s
important.
1) If a certain number is doubled
and then increased by three, the
result is the same as if the number
were tripled and then decreased by
one. What is the number?
Note-Taking
1) Think like the
writer (or teacher).
2) Put it in your
own words.
3) Make it fun!
Mitochondria are rod-shaped organelles that
can be considered the power generators of the
cell, converting oxygen and nutrients into
adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the
chemical energy "currency" of the cell that
powers the cell's metabolic activities. This
process is called aerobic respiration and is the
reason animals breathe oxygen. Without
mitochondria (singular, mitochondrion), higher
animals would likely not exist because their cells
would only be able to obtain energy from
anaerobic respiration (in the absence of
oxygen), a process much less efficient than
aerobic respiration. In fact, mitochondria enable
cells to produce 15 times more ATP than they
could otherwise, and complex animals, like
humans, need large amounts of energy in order
to survive.
Note-Taking
Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel (15 November 1891 – 14 October 1944),
popularly known as the Desert Fox, was a German Field Marshal of World War
II. He won the respect of both his own troops and the enemies he fought.
Rommel was a highly decorated officer in World War I and was awarded the
Pour le Mérite for his exploits on the Italian front. In World War II, he further
distinguished himself as the commander of the 7th Panzer Division during the
1940 invasion of France. However, it was his leadership of German and Italian
forces in the North African campaign that established the legend of the Desert
Fox. He is considered to have been one of the most skilled commanders of
desert warfare in the conflict. He later commanded the German forces opposing
the Allied cross-channel invasion in Normandy.
As one of the few generals who consistently fought the Western Allies (he
was never assigned to the Eastern Front), Rommel is regarded as having been
a humane and professional officer. His Afrikakorps was never accused of war
crimes. Soldiers captured during his Africa campaign were reported to have
been treated humanely. Furthermore, he ignored orders to kill captured
commandos, Jewish soldiers and civilians in all theaters of his command.

Despite the fact that the Allied forces
vastly outnumbered those of the Axis
Powers, World War II lasted for over five
years. In an essay, discuss some of the
factors that contributed to the war s
duration.
- Anything remembered? (Rommel = Boss)
- Anything indirect? (Lot of fronts)
4) Time to write!
- Anything made up? (WWI… part two!)

Controlling Ideas:
Axis forces were small,
but good at fighting.
Crafting sentences:
Rommel was a total boss. Too casual.
General Rommel was a good general. Too simple.
Gen. Rommel was an indefatigable pugilist. Too much.
Rommel was an accomplished commander. Juuust right!
