Volume 1, Number 7 From the Principal… March is Reading Month! One of my most favorite times of the year is when we are able to celebrate reading school-wide. This year we have some special things planned for all of the students to participate in a reading incentive. We have partnered this year with the United Shore Professional Baseball League. The USPBL is beginning its inaugural baseball season at Jimmy John’s Field in Downtown Utica this summer. The USPBL features three teams –the Utica Unicorns, the Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers and the team representing our area - the Eastside Diamond Hoppers. The reading program is designed to encourage students to read more. You child will have the opportunity to improve his or her reading skills while earning a ticket to a baseball game at the brand new Jimmy John’s Field! Additionally, the minutes that students read will also be counted towards a school-wide reading goal. Each week, teachers will send down the number of total minutes their class has read. We will record that information outside the main office. The school-wide goals is 200,000 minutes read during the month of March! If students should meet or surpass this goal, students will awarded with a special assembly where I will be prepared to do something wacky, crazy and zany… all because they met their goal! The student council will be coming up with just what they want to see happen… I’ve heard kiss a pig or get slimed are some of the favorite choices! Just how many minutes is 200,000 minutes? If each student can read 100 minutes per week, that will be 400 minutes for the month of March. We have over 500 students in our building. 500 students x 400 minutes = 200,000 minutes. During the month, please tweet pictures reading with your students! Use the hashtag #readwithme and let us know @Seminole_Acad I can’t wait to see some great reading pictures! -Ms. Elizabeth Manning March 25 NO SCHOOL March 31 Reading Night 6:00-8:00 April 4-8 NO SCHOOL – SPRING BREAK April 11 PTC Meeting April 11-29 5th Grade M-STEP *6 days Reading Night has been scheduled for March 31st – please keep an eye out for the flyer to join in the fun!!! February Character Counts Trait Cooperation During the month of February, the character trait that students worked on demonstrating was Cooperation! There were many ways students demonstrated their honesty. Students were nominated by their classroom teacher to eat breakfast with me, if they were able to demonstrate an act of “cooperation.” Students brought their paper “cooperation” heart to breakfast, which was collected and is now currently displayed in our main hallway. For March, students will be working on the character trait “respect.” Cooperative students nominated the week of February 1st – 5th. Breakfast Celebration February 5th. Cooperative students nominated the week of February 8th – 12th. Breakfast Celebration February 12th. Cooperative students nominated the week of February 22nd-26th. At our last two parent-teacher council meetings, there have been less than 10 parents! We need your support. If you have any questions, or would like more information on volunteering please contact president Nikki Knight (586) 260-3534 Our next meeting is March 7, 2016 at 9:00am in the LGI room! Popcorn Sales The PTC is selling! If you would like to volunteer to help pop, pack and deliver bags, please contact Nikki Knight(586) 260-3534! Each bag will cost 50 cents. Students can purchase 1 bag. Mark your calendar, popcorn sales will be on the following days: March 4 & 18 April 1 & 29 Some Friendly Reminders… If students are going to be picked up at the end of the day, instead of riding the bus home, please send a note to your child’s teacher! Parents should plan to meet their child and child’s teacher at the flag pole. All students riding the bus are dismissed to the gym, while car riders/walkers wait with their teacher at the flag pole. Thank you! In accordance with the school policy and procedures, students getting picked up between 2:30-3:38 can only do so in an emergency situation. Students will be given an unexcused afternoon tardy without a note from a doctor indicating there was an appointment. An implemented Pest Management (IPM) Program is in place for Seminole Academy. An IPM is a broad-based approach that integrates practices for economic control of pests. It is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management. It utilizes baiting and monitoring procedures on the interior and exterior of the buildings to eradicate insect and rodent control issues. Periodic treatments will occur during the 2015-2016 school year. If you have any questions, please contact the main office: 586461-3900. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Next Tuesday, March 8, 2016 Seminole Academy will be open for voting while simultaneously holding our regular school day. I’m looking for parents to help monitor a table near the entrance to point voters in the correct direction to the polls and then back out the exit. This will help ensure outside guests and our students do not mix during this day. Please return the bottom of this form if you can help monitor a table for a 2 hour block. Any help you can give us would be appreciated! Check the time that works best for you, and provide us with contact information!
