Comparing and
Ordering Numbers
Place value is the value of the position of a digit
in a number.
For example, 5 is in the hundred-thousands
place value in the number below. So, the digit
has a value of 500,000.

Corpus Christi is a large,
coastal city in southern
Texas. It had an estimated
population of 285,267 in
2006. You can compare
numbers to find which cities
in Texas have a larger
population than Corpus
Christi.
To compare numbers, start with the digits in the largest place value. Move to
the right and look for which digit is greater than (.), less than (,), or equal to
(5) the digit with the same place value in the other number.
Write ., ,, or 5 to compare 28,956 and
28,413.
Line up the numbers by the ones place.
28,956
28,413
Start with the largest place value. Both of the
numbers have a 2 in the ten thousands place.
Move to the right. Both numbers have an 8 in
the thousands place. Move to the right. The
digits in the hundreds place are different.
9.4
So, 28,956 . 28,413.

Which sentence matches “four thousand
eighteen is less than four thousand eighty”?
A 4,018 , 4,008
B 4,008 , 4,018
C 4,080 . 4,080
Build A Bridge 2
Write the math sentence
for “twenty thousand six
hundred fifty is greater
than twelve thousand
six hundred fifteen.”
D 4,018 , 4,080
First, write each number and reread the word
sentence to make sure the digits are in the
correct place value. Then, look at the phrase
that tells you which symbol to use. “Less than”
means ,. Choice D has the correct numbers
and symbol.
To order a set of numbers, compare each number to the others in the set.

All four numbers have a 4 in the ten
thousands place. Two numbers have a 6 in
the thousands place. Compare those two first,
and then compare the other two numbers.
Then, write all four numbers in order from
least to greatest.
