“Healthy Digestive System” Prevention Plus Series By Pamela A. Heyen and Cristina Campbell What you will learn: • The importance of healthy eating • How poor digestion can affect your overall health • What part stress and emotions play in your digestive health • How you can support your digestive system • How to relieve digestive upsets and heal chronic digestive diseases What is Digestion? • A complex process of turning the food you eat into the energy you need to survive • Starts in the mouth • Includes enzymes and hormones to aid in the breakdown of food • Involves creating waste to be eliminated The Digestion System The Command Center of the Immune System The Mouth • Digestion begins when the smell of food triggers the salivary glands causing your mouth to water • Food must be chewed well • Saliva begins to break down starches • The tongue then kneads the food into a ball for swallowing The Digestion System (cont.) The Pharynx and Esophagus • The pharynx, or throat, receives the food from your mouth • Act of swallowing takes place in the throat partly as a reflex and partly under voluntary control • Food is carried to the stomach by means of a series of contractions, from the esophagus, called peristalsis • Lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a ring-shaped muscle, opens to let food pass into the stomach and then closes *When the LES doesn't work properly, you may suffer from a condition called GERD or reflux, which causes heartburn and regurgitation (the feeling of food coming back up). The Digestion System (cont.) The Stomach and Intestines • Stomach secretes acid and powerful enzymes to break down food • Food moves into small intestine • Small intestine breaks down fats, proteins and carbohydrates for absorption using enzymes released by the pancreas and bile • Nutrients are absorbed through the small intestine walls and into the bloodstream • Indigestible substances, such as fiber, pass into the large intestine or colon, where water and ions are reabsorbed and held for elimination Accessory Digestive Organs Pancreas • Secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine to digest protein, fats, and carbohydrates Liver • Makes and secretes bile • Purifies the blood of many impurities Gallbladder • Stores excess bile made in the liver • Bile helps to break down fats and carry waste from the liver Digestive Disorders Inflammatory Bowel Disease • IBD includes Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis • An inflammation in the digestive tract • Symptoms include abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, fever and weight loss Symptoms Lack of nutrient absorption in the small intestine Celiac Disease Results Malnutrition Anemia Diarrhea Vitamin or mineral deficiencies Flatulence Fluid retention Abdominal bloating Osteoporosis Mental confusion Skin problems Bruising easily and muscle weakness Fatigue Infertility A gluten free diet is recommended Constipation Common causes: • Inadequate water and fiber in the diet • Disruption of regular diet or routine • Inadequate activity • Dairy products • Stress • Resisting the urge to have a bowel movement • Overuse of laxatives and eating disorders • Medications Defined as: • Irregular and infrequent or difficult evacuation of the bowels • Straining during a bowel movement more than 25% of the time • Hard stools more than 25% of the time • Incomplete evacuation more than 25% of the time • Less than 1 bowel movement a day Diarrhea Uncomplicated Diarrhea • Abdominal bloating or cramps • Thin, loose or watery stool • Sense of urgency to have a bowel movement • Nausea and vomiting Complicated Diarrhea • Blood, mucus, or undigested food in the stool • Weight loss • Fever *Diarrhea can quickly deplete the body's supply of water and electrolytes (such as sodium and potassium) that tissues need to function. Contact your doctor if you have prolonged diarrhea or a fever that lasts more than 24 hours. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) • Includes more than 22 million people in the U.S. and approximately 10-20% of all adults • Aggravated by chronic stress, major depression, anxiety, urinary dysfunction and altered sleep patterns • Affects the small and large intestines • Studies* show enteric coated peppermint oil, found in Digest and Cleanse softgels, is beneficial for treatment and decreases pain • Cramps • Gas and bloating • Constipation • Diarrhea and lose stools • Fatty foods like chocolate and milk products worsen symptoms *Sagduyu K, “Peppermint oil for irritable bowel syndrome,” psychosomatics 2002 Nov-Dec; 43(6):508-9. Stomach Ulcers • May be caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria • Aggravated by psychological stress • Use of anti-inflammatory medications • Smoking may cause ulcer formation and ulcer treatment failure • Excess secretion of hydrochloric acid, as in acid indigestion *Symptoms include: gnawing or burning pain in the middle or upper stomach between meals or at night, bloating, heartburn, nausea or vomiting; with severe cases there can be dark black stool (due to bleeding), and weight loss. Crohn’s Disease • Chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines • Symptoms include abdominal pain and diarrhea, sometimes bloody • Researchers believe it is actually an autoimmune disease • MSM found in Sulfurzyme may relieve symptoms *Can cause deterioration of bowel function, leaky gut syndrome, poor absorption of nutrients, loss of appetite and weight, intestinal obstruction, severe bleeding and increased susceptibility to intestinal cancer. Acid Reflux, Heartburn and Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) • One in 10 Americans experiences heartburn (acid reflux) symptoms at least once a week • Certain foods, medications, obesity, or even stress can trigger symptoms • An irritation of the esophagus caused by acid that refluxes (comes up) from the stomach Heart Burn Blend found in Essential Oils Desk Reference 2 drops basil 8 drops sage 2 drops Idaho tansy 3 drops sandalwood Blend in ½ to 1 oz. of V-6 mixing oil. I lived on Zantac, Rolaids, and Pepto-Bismol. A new physical therapist started at the clinic I was working at and saw me downing the “Pepto” and asked me to try something different. She whipped out an essential oil called Di-Gize. She put 10+ drops in my hand and had me rub it on my stomach...to my amazement my pain was gone in 10 minutes! After that I was sold on alternative methods to become healthier...I then did a colon cleanse with the Cleansing Trio, then went on to the liver cleansing products, periodically using the Di-Gize along with the AlkaLime...I am happy to say I have not had an episode in over 8 years and rarely use Di-Gize!! Thank you Young Living! Brenda Schuler, MN Di-Gize Testimonials Fortunately, we have quick relief from any kind of digestive distress by just rubbing Di-Gize over our abdominal area or put a drop on a cube of dry bread and hold it under the tongue until dissolved. Digestive enzymes are for individuals seeking relief from symptoms of fullness, pressure, bloating, gas, pain, and/or minor cramping that occur after eating. Any individual with persistent indigestion should see a doctor to rule out more serious causes of gastrointestinal tract discomfort. First, identify the food component (fat, protein, fiber, and/or carbohydrate) that gives you symptoms mentioned above. This may be a sign of your body lacking in enzymes necessary to digest that particular food component. Next, identify the product for your digestive insufficiency and take 1-2 capsules three times daily before consuming the meal containing that identified food.
