Dear Head Teacher
NEW Autism Outreach Service and Autism Training
It is no longer unusual to have a child with a diagnosis of autism on a school roll. The Code of
Practice recognises that it is the responsibily of the school to meet SEND learning needs of
students with wide ranging SEND. It is expected under the new SEND statutory framework that
schools take more responisibility to skill up their workforce and make arrangements to provide and
meet the needs of their pupils.
Autism Training
Children with Autism do better in schools where staff have had access to the right training. Forward
planning to invest and skill up staff is a proactive step.
This year from January – December 2017 you can access ‘Making Sense of Autism’ training for all
your staff at no cost. The training is accredited by the Autism Education Trust (AET) at Tier 1.
Staff teaching students with Autism will need a greater understanding of evidence based
approaches and interventions. Your staff can get AET accredited training ‘Good Autism Practice’ at
Tier 2 through the Derby Teaching School Alliance (DTSA). In addition schools are encouraged to
identify a lead teacher for Autism and access the the ASD Champions Courses run by the
Specialist Teaching and Psychology Service (STePS).

Autism Outreach Support
It is a school’s responsibility to access additional support and input from specialist outside
agencies.
Starting 1 September 2017 you will be able to buy in support from Specialist Teachers and
Practitioners for Autism. Derby City is trialling a new model for the delivery of outeach support to
mainstream schools (academy, maintained and free schools) and their students with Autism. The
new ASD Outreach Team is a group of professionally trained and highly qualified Specialist
Teachers and Practitioners who have a wealth of experience working with Children and Young
People (CYP) with Autism. The team will be able to offer schools advice and support to your school
from 1 September 2017. The support will be tailored to the individual needs of the CYP and staff
will work with schools to ensure students are fully included socially and as learners.
The Autism Outreach Team comprises of staff from the following schools/ services:
 Brackensdale Junior Enhanced Resource School
 Springfield Primary Enhanced Resource School
 The Bemrose School Enhanced Resource School
 St Giles’ Special School
 St Martin’s Special School
 The Specialist Teaching and Psychology Service (STePS) ASD Team
The Autism Outreach Team will work with pupils across all key stages, from early years to Year 13
(students on your school roll only); working together with you to improve the learning for your
students.
The team can assist you to work towards the Autism Education Trust (AET) School Standards,
Core Competencies for staff or Autism Friendly School status.
The Autism Outreach Team can provide coaching, mentoring and support alongside training with
further input and intervention programmes to improve progress and student learning outcomes.
The Autism Outreach Team can support you to include named pupils with a diagnosis of Autism
with or without an Education, Health and Care Plan but it’s important to recognise that not all
students with a diagnosis (or with a plan) need intervention from the outreach team. If specialist
ASD support is written into an EHC plan additional funding provided by the LA through the plan
may be used by your school to fund outreach support.
