Chairs Report
What an exciting game of footy we had at GEO on Friday night! Our Ingenium First and Second
Grade teams took on Queanbeyan under lights. Unfortunately neither team came away with a
win, but there has been real excitement about the performance our First Grade team put on.
This weekend will see all of our players and volunteers enjoying the long weekend away from
the footy field with all senior teams having a bye and it’s our last weekend before the junior
season starts.
Being early in the season I thought it was timely to introduce the club’s Board of Directors. As
with all positions and duties fulfilled in the club, the Board too is made up of volunteers who
freely dedicate their time as a Director to strategically lead the club and its endeavours.
The Board currently includes; Joe Cortese, Terry Evans, Gordon Kelly, Peter Kocmar, Matt Warr,
Steve Withers, Michael Whyte, Anthony Wilson and myself. We have a good mix of new and
fresh ideas with Matt, Steve and Gordon joining the Board at our most recent AGM as well as
experience on the board and at the club with Joe, Terry, Michael, Anthony, Peter and myself.
The Board is also strongly supported by both the Senior and Junior Committees. These
Committees function with more of an operations focus thus allowing the Board to ensure it
focuses on strategy and not become ‘bogged down’ with the nitty gritty of running football.
That’s not to say the Board doesn’t understand this, it does, but it cannot effectively lead our
club if it’s not looking and planning ahead.
The Board is currently reviewing the club’s strategic plan that will drive our goals for 2017 and
beyond. While this is exciting to consider what we want to achieve for the club in the future, we
are remaining focused on what is achievable and how we will get there. This plan will include
the key strategic areas of the club relating to our players, volunteers, club culture, facilities as
well as our sponsors and the Gungahlin community. We will be engaging key stakeholders both
internal and external to the club to develop this plan. Once finalised, it will be communicated
widely so we can all work together to achieve the goals of the Gungahlin Jets AFC.
On behalf of the Board we look forward to seeing you all at the footy over the coming season.
Feel free to come and have a chat to us there

Junior Committee Report
Are we there yet…Are we there yet…Are we there yet ???
In only a few weeks over 300 Junior Jets will be taking to the fields across Canberra.
The Junior Fixtures were released earlier in the week, it is important to acknowledge just how
hard it is to put together a draw for the entire AFL Canberra competition while trying to
facilitate the multitude of requests from clubs all over the region. The majority of the draw
requests submitted by the Jets have been accommodated wherever possible and we would like
to thank AFL Canberra for their hard work on this. Unfortunately we do not have many Junior
night games at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval which is predominantly a result of the need to
compete with other football codes (League, Union and Soccer) and the introduction of night
game curfews introduced by the ACT Government.
The full fixtures can be found here:
http://www.foxsportspulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-1051-0-0-0&a=COMPS
In 2016 the Jets will be fielding 20 Junior teams as follows:
Under 8 (Auskick Pro) x 5
Under 9 x 3
Under 10 x 3
Under 11 x 1
Under 12 x 1
Under 13 x 1
Under 14 x 1
Under 15 x 1
Under 17 x 2
Youth Girls Under 16 x 1
Youth Girls Under 19 x 1
The Committee has been working tirelessly behind the scenes since November preparing for the
season ahead…we are all extremely keen for the season to get underway so that we can all sit
back and enjoy the footy.
Last weekend saw Canberra clubs participate in the GWS Giants March Around Manuka. For the
3rd year in a row, the Jets were well represented with over 100 junior players proudly wearing
their Jets gear as they did a lap of honour around Manuka oval…helping the Giants to a record
breaking win.

Call for Volunteers
2016 – Getting involved to support and build the Jets
In 2016, one area of focus that the Jets Juniors will be driving is building on our family and
community club – let’s all get involved & be supportive. How can we achieve this? As the saying
goes...“Many hands make light work”. The juniors have a great team of volunteers in our
committee, coaches, managers and age coordinators but we can’t do it all.
This does not mean you have to dedicate hours of time each week but you can do as little or as
much as you like.
Do you:
•Have an interest in food: why not assist our canteen manager with putting together healthy
menu options for the canteen;
•Like to be tidy & organised: assist our Property Manager in keeping the equipment containers
clean and organized;
•Have a flare for fashion: help our merchandise volunteer fulfill orders and keep the merchandise
room spick and span;
•Like organising : whether it be for fundraising or organising one fun activity for the year or
would you like to join the social committee;
•Like to delve into the world of IT : assist with updating the Jets website, managing the Jets
App/facebook page.
You can assist when the kids are at training so you’re there already! Get friends together and it’s
an excuse to get together for a wine, beer or cuppa. Getting involved is so easy, very rewarding
and beneficial for your health too!
If you are interested in getting involved or have any questions, please contact me, it would be
great to hear from you. If you have any ideas, suggestions, comments, feedback about anything
or everything…please share it!

My name is Steve Wall and I am the Umpire Ambassador for the Jets Juniors. I have been an
Umpire for over 20 years and have been in this role at the Club for the last three years. The
Umpire Ambassador role has been set up to provide a link between the Clubs and the Umpires,
encourage a better relationship between the Clubs and the Umpires and foster the development
of Club Umpires in this league.
In case you missed week one, I wanted to remind everyone that the game does not function
without umpires and it can be rewarding in many ways for those that want to give it a go! Please
contact me on the details below for more information.
There is a Club Umpire Information Night to be conducted on Wed 20 Apr at the Tradies Woden
in the Amber or Melrose Room commencing at 1800 until 1930. I will be holding a volunteer
information session on Wed 27 Apr at Amaroo to assist anyone who is interested in boundary
and goal umpiring with a field umpire session to follow if there is enough interest.
I will leave these here for this week to reinforce the message:
•The new interpretation for deliberate out of bounds is in effect for U17s and above only.
Australian Football match policy states that the deliberate out of bounds and deliberate rushed
behind laws are not applicable to age group from U15s and below. Therefore the new
interpretation in this case will not change most junior games. For U17s and above the new
interpretation is centred around a stricter interpretation being applied which is based on the
player not showing enough intent to keep the ball in play. There will be less benefit of the doubt
given to the player and if there is a realistic option to keep the ball in play and the player does
not elect to take that option, deliberate out of bounds should be paid.
•There is also a new interpretation for dangerous tackles where if a player lifts, slings, rotates or
drive their opponent into the ground with excessive force, resulting in the head region being
placed in a vulnerable position, a free kick should be awarded against the tackler. Cues for the
umpire will be lifting of players, arms being pinned, players forced head first towards the ground,
unreasonable force in the circumstances (ie rotation), the tackler must show duty of care.
I implore all players, officials and spectators to familiarise themselves with the links below to
ensure you have a better understanding of the laws of the game and how they are applied. The
interpretations of these can be very subjective and each contest in the game can be contentious
with umpires having to make thousands of decisions a game. I would ask that a level of respect is
maintained between the players, officials, umpires and spectators to allow our great game to
flourish and to ensure that everyone has a great time at the footy.

Seniors Division 1
vs Queanbeyan, Round 3
After a disappointing Round 1 performance the Jets had two weeks to get themselves back on
track and Round 3 presented an opportunity to redeem ourselves. Taking on last season's
Premiers seemed a daunting task, however the playing group looked at the game as more of an
opportunity to make a statement to the rest of the competition. The Jets aren't here just to make
up numbers.
With a solid fortnights preparation the players were up and about and ready to cause the upset
of the season. Again we started well, but a lack of polish and some early errors hurt as we weren't
able to make the most of our early chances and then on the back of some simple errors
Queanbeyan started to hit the scoreboard.
Short losses of concentration and skills execution opened up the doors for Queanbeyan and as
you would assume the reigning premiers made the most of their opportunities kicking the first 7
goals of the game. Being 41 points down 10 minutes into the second quarter it looked as though
the game was going to blow open. But not this time, not this year, this is a different Jets outfit
who don't give up and continue to believe.
Instead of dropping their heads the Jets lifted their intensity and really took it up to Queanbeyan.
The tackling pressure increased and Queanbeyan couldn't match the Jets attack on the footy. The
Jets kicked four of the next five goals to finish off the half and take the momentum into the main
break.
24 points down at half time and with only 20 fit players left on the park the Jets still believed and
knew they had what it takes to run over the Tigers. The team regathered at half time and set off
to run over the top of Queanbeyan in the second half. However Queanbeyan weren't going to lay
down and came out of half time with intensity and purpose. In quick succession Queanbeyan put
on two quick goals to open the lead up to 6 goals again, but with a new sense of belief the Jets
hit back and again in the second half of the quarter were running all over their opponents.
The Jets fitness was clearly superior to Queanbeyan's and despite being two men down since
quarter time the Jets looked as though they were going to run away with this game. As has been
the case however the Jets struggled to make the most of their opportunities in front of goal and
despite dominating the quarter the Jets were only able to win the quarter by 2 points.
With 25 minutes remaining in the match and 22 points in arrears the players felt confident they
had the run in their legs to cause the upset we'd set out to cause. Through Liam Hunter the Jets
kicked an early goal and all was going to plan. However Queanbeyan dug deep and stuck their
claws in to hold on with all their might. Attack after attack was rebounded by the Tigers as the
Jets just couldn't deliver any more blows, and eventually time run out as Queanbeyan hung on to
record a 4 goal victory.
Despite the disappointment of losing the game the players should be really proud of their
efforts. The resolve and desire to keep in the contest and keep pushing for victory was
inspirational and all of the supporters that witnessed the game had nothing but praise for the
players. Everyone should be really pleased with their efforts and have now shown that they
Seniors Division 1 continued
are good enough to compete with the best in this competition.
Having said all of that the coaching staff believe that was another game that got away from us,
which is a great sign for the club. However we need to start winning these games and Saturday
week presents another opportunity for us to do that. With a few minor things to work on the Jets
need to continue to train hard to ensure we make the most of our opportunities.
The night wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the help of our volunteers. Thank you to
Michael again for running the canteen, Sasha and the other water runners for keeping our players
hydrated, Muzza for doing the running duties for both games, Whytey for recording the game
and Zach for copping an ear battering from myself with the phone duties on the bench.

Seniors Division 2
vs Queanbeyan, Round 3
The first quarter was a baptism by fire for the Jets as the two tall forwards for Queanbeyan
seemed to have the ball on a string. It was five goals straight in sixteen minutes from the Tigers,
and the Jets were left to regroup at the quarter time break. If not for some courageous play from
the inspirational Dan Hambo, the gap may have been a little bigger.
At the quarter time break, the Coach encouraged the Jets to stay on their feet in the contests. Be
confident when gathering the ball as rushing the play was causing poor disposals.
The second quarter started with the Jets Man Mountain Lachie Foley-Guerin dominating across
the back line. The Jets took a pounding from the umpires with ten free kicks to one awarded to
Queanbeyan for the quarter. Jaidyn Storey was starting to take over in the ruck, and the ever
reliable Nobba was shutting down the big Queanbeyan forward and picking up plenty of
disposals across half back. It was the interstate boys with a six goal margin at the main break.
The inconsistent umpiring continued into the third period, and to make matters worse, Jaidyn
Storey picked up a season-ending ACL injury and was stretchered from the field five minutes into
the quarter. Queanbeyan added six goals to one for the period and it was looking like a training
run at times for them. Trent Rudd and Big Mace battled hard, but it was going to take a mighty
team effort to get back from here.
A strong final quarter from Milney and Kev Mangan was showing promise, but the Jets were
having trouble releasing from inside their defensive 50. Queanbeyan kicked 3.8 for the final
period and it was all over bar the shouting.
The Jets will be better for this run as they now have had two tough matches leading into the long
weekend break. This will give the boys time to reflect on what was not working in the first two
rounds, and come up with a game plan to fix that. The interchange bench looked more like an
emergency waiting room as three Jets players were bandaged and done for the night. One thing
you can be assured of, and that is the Jets will bounce back and set their sights firmly on their
next opponents.
Better players for mind were Nobba, Dan Hambo, Milney, Big Mace and Jessie Cox.
