On March 26, 2011, Sandra Dubose-Gibson made history, as the first ever bald beauty queen in the Tar Heel state, and was crowned 2011 Mrs. Black North Carolina. She is someone who has always recognized that despite the influx of wigs, weaves, and plastic surgery that has become the cornerstone of “conventional” beauty, real beauty permeates from the inside-out. North Carolina agrees. The fire is ignited in Mrs. Dubose-Gibson’s mission; she is passionately committed to spreading the news about Alopecia Areata and celebrating ourselves and each other regardless of our differences. Starting in September, she will travel throughout the state of North Carolina, sharing her self-documentary film, “Project Liberation, My Alopecia Experience” in 8 cities sponsored in part by the NC public libraries. The event is called, “The Project Liberation Movement” and it is free and open to the public. Attendees must register to secure their seat at: www.ProjectLiberationMovement.Eventbrite.com. After the film showing, she will facilitate a group discussion and provide an opportunity for Q & A. There will be a drawing for free door prizes and complimentary light refreshments. ABOUT SANDRA DUBOSE-GIBSON At the age of 25, Mrs. Dubose-Gibson was diagnosed with the autoimmune skin disease Alopecia Areata, which causes unpredictable, patchy hair loss. This condition affects nearly 5 million people in the United States alone. Since that time, she has developed Alopecia Universalis which is the complete loss of all the hair on her scalp and body. Initially, she was devastated by the experience and it caused her to suffer from low self esteem. Over the years, DuboseGibson says, “I have grown to understand that we cannot be defined by our hair or any of our physical attributes. True beauty originates from within and that can never be compromised.” Mrs. Dubose-Gibson is not just a Beauty Queen; she is a sort after, national motivational speaker, a professional performing artist through her company Dubose Entertainment and the founder of the Alopecia Community of the Triangle support group. (www.AlopeciaCommunity.org) Her platform is Alopecia Awareness and the promotion of healthy self esteem for women of all ages with hair and without. This dynamic woman with an engaging human interest story has already been featured on several television stations including WRAL, FOX 8, My Charlotte Today and My Carolina Today. Sandra travels throughout the U.S inspiring others through her words and songs. Some of her upcoming performances this year include the Southern Women’s Show Charlotte on Saturday, September 17, 2011 and the NC Governor's Women's Conference hosted by Governor Bev Perdue on November 2, 2011 at the Charlotte Convention Center. ###
