Teen Court is a specially designed court which hears only certain Class C misdemeanor cases. The individual cases are defended and prosecuted by teen attorneys and the verdict is rendered by a jury of teens. Teen Court provides an individual a voluntary alternative to the Municipal courts. Young offenders are able to plea no contest or guilty and have their case heard amongst their peers and instead of paying a fine amount, their sentencing is with community service hours and jury terms. If all requirements are completed, the offense will not appear as a conviction. Benefits of Teen Court Authority for Teen Court In 1989, the 71st Texas Legislature passed amendments to the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure (Art. 45.052) and the Texas Family Code (Art. 54.032) relating to the dismissal of certain misdemeanor charges upon completion of a Teen Court program. Eligibility Youths (ages 10-17) who are currently enrolled in school may request Teen Court from the Municipal Judge during the Juvenile Docket. A teen may enroll only if he/she has not successfully completed a Teen Court program in any court in the past two years. Failure to comply with all requirements of the sentence as ordered by the Teen Court within 180 days of the Teen Court appearance, the case will be remanded back to the Municipal Court Judge and the violation may be reported as a conviction. Volunteer Participation Holds juvenile offenders responsible for their behavior and make them recognize that the consequences are a direct result of their own actions. Promote a positive attitude of teenagers toward authority by treating all individuals with respect; Provide teenage defendants with a positive experience in the judicial system, thereby reducing recidivism and helping deter the defendant from committing other crimes; Establish positive relationships between the community and its youth, which creates greater understanding.
