In 1907, Russia, France and Britain created an
alliance called the “Triple Entente”.
The Triple Entente was formed in retaliation to
the “Triple Alliance”: an alliance between
Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy.
The Treaty stated that each country had a
“moral obligation” to support each other
during war.

Russia, France and Britain were old enemies of
the past. Nevertheless, they overcame their
differences and united to form a stronger
alliance against Germany’s growing power.
Russia and France formed an alliance in 1894.
Britain joined the talks with France for a
friendly agreement (Entente Cordiale) in 1904.
By 1907, Sir Edward Grey, the foreign minister
of Britain negotiated his nation into the Triple
Entente.

European nations would form alliances in
order to protect themselves from larger
powers.
Germany was becoming more and more
powerful, a large looming threat to Russia,
Britain and France.
When Germany allied with Italy and AustriaHungary (Triple Alliance), Russia, France and
Britain decided to create their own alliance in
order to protect themselves.

When Gavrilo Princip shot Franz Ferdinand of
Austria, he triggered World War I.
Austria-Hungary demanded to invade Serbia
and drive out the “plotters”. Before Serbia
could respond with its objection, Russia
declared a war against Austria-Hungary,
France and Britain followed. Germany declared
war on the three nations.
Thus began World War I.
