Firefighter Risk & Resilience
Study Newsletter - Winter 2014
http://wired.ivvy.com/event/WFG14/ The first World Firefighters Games were held in 1990 in Auckland, New Zealand. This event brings together full time career Firefighters, part time and volunteer Firefighters, Fire Chiefs, Emergency Service work
ers, Ambulance personnel, Para
medics, Military and Aviation Firefighters, Wildland firefight
ers, Petrochemical Firefighters, Support services personnel, re
tired emergency service employ
ees, and their families. The origi
nal philosophy of the Games was to be an event created by fire
fighters, for firefighters. Since then the Games have taken place every two years in different cities around the world. This year the World Firefighters Games will be held in Los Ange
les, California on August 1524, and is the first Games to be hosted in the United States in more than 20 years. This is a 10 day event that will include 48 different sports, as well as social events and an industry expo. This year’s Games are expected to include more than 15,000 partici
pants from over 50 different countries. The Games include a diverse variety of sports. There are team sports such as basketball, dodge
ball, volleyball, soccer, softball, and flag football. There are also individual sports such as boxing, bodybuilding, judo, shooting, surfing, swimming, angling, and a variety of running sports. Other sports included in the Games are tugofwar, bowling, poker, darts, horseshoes, tennis, and kayaking. There are even some unique games such as the firehouse cook off, the fire truck challenge, the disaster challenge, and the bucket brigade. The pre
mier event is called the Toughest Firefighter Alive, during which firefighters complete a variety of challenges that they would need to perform on a daily basis. This is just a small portion of the events one can participate in dur
ing the Games. In addition to 10 days filled with sports challenges, the World Firefighters Games also in
cludes an exciting calendar of planned social events. Among others, the social events will include opening and closing ceremonies, WFG Gala Dinner, Next Host Night, and Singles Night. Furthermore, the 2014 World Firefighters Games will be hosting an industry expo August 2124. Because charity is important to the World Firefighters Games, they have made a large dona
tion to the IAFF Charitable Foundation, as well as prom
ised to provide further financial support for every registration beyond 10,000 IAFF member participants. http://www.cvent.com/events/world

Spotlight on Service - Austin Fire Department
In our newsletters we highlight firefighter service outside the line of duty from the cities in our study. In this
newsletter, we focus on Austin, Texas.
http://www.stbaldricks.org http://www.iafflocal975.org/index.cfm?section=16&pagenum=175 military have been a part of St. Bald
rick’s since the very beginning. Many first responders have shaved their heads for this cause with events happening in fire and police stations across the country. There is an official challenge between the police department, fire depart
ment, and EMS for who can raise the most money for St. Baldrick’s Foun
dation. There are many ways to help. You can go bald and shave your head in solidarity with the children or you can support a brave shavee by donat
ing money to support childhood can
cer research. There are two St. Baldrick’s day events in Austin at Dell Children’s Hospital and at Fado Irish Pub. The event at Dell Children’s Hospital is a great time to see the children that you are supporting. There is a children’s fair with music, games, and food, as well as shaving booths. During the event at Fado Irish Pub ESPADA helps to raise money while perform
ing throughout the day. Both regis
tered participants and walkins are welcome. The events require a $50 donation, which includes a shirt. Sources: http://www.stbaldricks.org http://www.iafflocal975.org/

rick’s Foundation to fund childhood cancer research. The St. Baldrick’s day/ St. Patrick’s Day events are a time when many brave volunteers shave their heads to show solidarity with children with cancer, particu
larly those who lose their hair during treatment. St. Balddrick’s foundation is a vol
unteerdriven charity that seeks to fund the best research to find cures for childhood cancer and give these children long, healthy lives. The first St. Baldrick’s event was held in 2000 which raised $104,000 to do
nate to the Children’s Oncology Group with 19 shaved heads. Since then St. Baldrick’s volunteers across the U.S. have raised more than $100 million to fund childhood cancer research grants. In 2013 alone vol
unteers raised over $34 million. Firefighters, police officers, and the 2201 MacArthur Drive
