WORKING PRINCIPLE
Air/Oil Tandem rotary section provides the smooth control of
hydraulics with the simplicity of air. The closed loop oil system gives
smooth precise speed control throughout the rotation using built-in
PHD Port Controls®. The illustration shows a Tandem Actuator with
built-in Port Controls® in the crossover manifold. As air is applied to
ports A and B, the unit rotates forcing oil from one rack to the other
across the manifold. The reservoir serves as an accumulator to
compensate for oil volume changes due to temperature variation.
NOTE: The reservoir should have 20 psi [1.4 bar] pressure at
all times to ensure the system remains purged.

PHD Multi-Motion Actuators can be provided to yield three,
four, or five rotary output positions. The various angle increments
are fixed as specified and only the extreme positions can be adjusted
in the field. Available for air or hydraulic service.
The schematic example shows a five position actuator.
Pressurizing port A provides full clockwise rotation (position V).
Pressurizing both ports B1 and B2 traps the racks between the
rod ends of the outer pistons X and Y to rotate output shaft to
position IV. Pressurizing ports C1 & C2 moves floating pistons in
the inside upper rack cylinders against stop tubes to trap upper

SIDE LOADING
Since the component that produces linear motion is
essentially a conventional air or hydraulic cylinder, care should
be taken to consider allowable side load versus stroke in the
same manner as standard cylinders including transverse support
members as needed.
The potential maximum speed of the PHD Multi-Motion
Actuator depends on pressure, flow, and external load. Since these
conditions vary with each application, it is difficult to predict exact
maximum speed values. However, care should be taken to ensure
that excessive speed is not developed causing detrimental shock
loads at the end of motion. Use of cushions and external stops will
enhance the unit’s capacity.

EXAMPLE:
An application requires 70 in-lb [8 Nm] effective torque in
retracted position, 100 lb [450 N] of thrust for extension and 20 lb
[90 N] for retraction. Linear movement is horizontal, and system
pressure is 150 psi [10 bar].
SOLUTION:
Step 1: Table II shows maximum allowable torque for Series 1000 &
2000 to be 200 in-lb [23 Nm], which is ample.
Step 2: Table III shows Model 1000 & 2000 thrust output of
150 lb at 150 psi [654 N at 10 bar] for extension, and 100 lb [436 N]
for retraction, which also satisfies the conditions.

Step 3: Again, Table III shows Model 2000 with theoretical torque of
116 in-lb [12.8 Nm] to be the smallest unit exceeding requirement.
Step 4: To arrive at actual torque output, locate appropriate torque
loss. For Model 2000 at 150 psi [10 bar] in retracted position,
torque loss is 15 in-lb [1.66 Nm].
Actual torque is 116 – 15 = 101 in-lb [12.8 – 1.66 = 11.14 Nm].
NOTE: External loads will affect the magnitude of the friction losses
in all applications where the unit is not operated in the horizontal
position.

TORSION AND BACKLASH
The rotary motion of the piston rod is controlled and
transferred from the rotary actuator portion through gear, coupling
and spline elements, permitting a certain amount of backlash.
This is, however, kept to a minimum by employing close tolerance
hardened components, and will not exceed:
