walks given by our talented team of horticulturists who will
share with you seasonal highlights at RHS Harlow Carr and
give you tips and advice for your own garden.
Harlow Carr offers the opportunity to learn alongside
RHS horticulturists and experts in the fantastically
resourced Bramall Learning Centre. This amazing building,
one of the greenest in the country, has three classrooms,
a library, teaching garden and glasshouse.
We have added to our range of garden craft and creative

round basket making, how to sculpt a wire hedgehog,
fuse glass to make coasters and make hand tied bouquets
with British Grown flowers to name but a few. We hope
you find a course to match your needs and look forward to
welcoming you to the garden in 2016.
Our 2016 programme aims to provide horticultural sessions

help with a new garden, looking for plants that will earn
their keep or wanting to learn to mow using a scythe.
We hope we have something for everyone. This year we

Tutor: Cheri LaMay
This course will inspire you to have a go at designing your own
garden and is also a taster for anyone considering a longer course
in garden design. Working closely with registered Member of the
Society of Garden Designers Cheri LaMay, BA Hons Landscape
Architecture, HND Horticulture, you will learn practical skills through
active participation, discussion and demonstration. Workshops
will help you to engage with your creativity (even if in the past
you have felt that you were not creative) so that you will see your
garden through fresh eyes. Cheri’s teaching style is enthusiastic and
she welcomes contributions from the group, with the understanding
that specific material will be covered during each session. This is a
unique opportunity to learn with the support of a freelance garden
designer who has a wealth of experience and who is also a qualified
teacher of adult education (Post Graduate Certificate in Education),
using Harlow Carr Garden as a fantastic learning resource. You can
learn more about Cheri and see her portfolio of gardens by visiting
www.earthworksnorth.co.uk
Day 1: The Site Responsive Garden and Garden Styles
A successful garden design will start with an open mind, will take
into account key characteristics of the landscape, and will be
empathetic to the more elusive “Spirit of Place”. In other words, it
will be site responsive. All of this information is encompassed in the
Site Analysis. We will discuss all aspects to be considered, and look
carefully at examples of different gardens and styles and notice
how they are responsive to their surroundings.
We will begin to understand the basic principles of garden design.
You may do a Site Analysis for your own garden as homework.
20
Day 2: Surveying the Garden
Garden Design
Garden Design
An Introduction to Garden Design
EW
N
Garden Design
We will learn to accurately measure a garden and draw it to scale
(surveying). The basic methods will be demonstrated before you
have the opportunity to work with a group to survey a small site.
You may then survey your own garden as homework. If you have
a large or complex garden you may consider having it surveyed by
a professional prior to the course. We will draw up a “Wish List” of
what we need and want to have in our gardens to prepare us for
the next few sessions, when we will begin to pull our information
together.
Day 3: Designing with Purpose
We will look at the gardens at Harlow Carr to learn how different
styles can be achieved with conscious use of form, hard materials,
water, seating and other features. We will see how a Mood Board,
Site Analysis and Zoning Plan can be brought together to design a
garden layout with a unique aesthetic, and you may make a Mood
Board and Zoning Plan for your garden as homework.
Day 4: Developing Your Design
Today we will ease into our creativity with some fun exercises using
coloured card and thick markers. This is a time to let go of detail,
forget logical thinking and to make a mess! It is anticipated that by
the end of the day you will have a number of possible layouts for
your garden, out of which you may select one to develop further.
Day 5: Planting Styles, Plant Associations
and Planting Plans
We will start the day by exploring colour theory; will study examples
of classic and modern planting styles; and venture into the gardens
at Harlow Carr to discover how colour, texture, form and plant
associations have been used. You will relate these principles to
the unique conditions of your own garden. Finally, we will look at
example Planting Plans to see how they can be drawn up to include
all of the necessary information.
Day 6: Completing a Stage of Design
It is anticipated that this time will be used to finish off any ongoing
part of your garden design project. You may wish to make a list
of plants which are suitable for your garden; select which plants
will achieve your desired style and plot them on a Planting Plan;
finish your Mood Board; or you may want help resolving your
overall design. Cheri will be available to offer one to one support
throughout the day. If you have any questions for Cheri before
enrolling you may contact her at [email protected]

Hand-tied bouquets with
British grown cut flowers
A white, cream or pale coloured flower presents an interesting and
exciting challenge for the botanical painter. In this workshop Colin
will show you two different approaches. The first will be ‘painting
white on white’ i.e. white paper, where water colour techniques of
representing light and shade will be the focus. The second approach
will be working on coloured papers, using a combination of white
gouache and watercolours. This can produce dramatic images,
especially if you are working on dark or even black papers. Colin will
be guiding you through each individual stage, covering a variety
of techniques and processes with demonstrations and individual
tuition. Beginners or experienced painters are welcome to attend.

Tutor: Steve Gosling
This one-day course is aimed at those relatively new to
photography or those wanting to know how to take more control
over their cameras. Steve, an award-winning photographer and
experienced tutor, will cover the basics of photography e.g.
controlling exposure (apertures, shutter speeds and understanding
the relationship between the two), depth of field made simple,
setting ISO, understanding file formats (JPEGs & RAW) and an
introduction to composition. The day will include a classroom-based
session and the opportunity to put your new skills into practice in
the gardens.
This two-day in-depth workshop provides an opportunity for
intermediate/experienced photographers to develop a creative
approach to photographing flowers and plants with plenty of
opportunity for personalised support and advice.
There will be a mixture of classroom-based teaching and extended
practical sessions in the garden, where you will be able to explore
different techniques through specific developmental exercises.
Steve will take a look at the nature of creativity and how it can be
actively developed. There will also be a portfolio review session
where participants can bring examples of their work for comment
