Membership of University Court Emeritus Professor Dina Abbott PhD, FRGS, FHEA As Professor of Development Geography Dina Abbott has taught at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level. Professor Abbott has also carried out much research in developing countries including West and East Africa and India. Her specialism is food, water and gendered poverty. She has been awarded grants including EU funding for a major project on climate change in partnership with several European Universities and the Open University (UK). She has published widely on issues related to both development and Geography. Currently she is a visiting Professor for the Netherlands Open University and continues to work with other external Universities and Development agencies. [2016] Mrs Joanne Adams LLB Joanne is a Lawyer who was a member of the University’s Governing Council for nine years until 2015. She was appointed as Director of Human Resources at Fresenius Medical Care a global healthcare company in 2013. Prior to this she joined Freeth LLP Solicitors in 1993 and was appointed partner in 2001. She also previously worked for Eversheds (London) and Nabarro (London). Joanne is a Director of Otium Legal a niche law firm specialising in employment law and HR. She has a deep interest in education having previously acted for a number of independent and state schools and colleges. She is a former director, trustee and governor of St Joseph's School, Nottingham. [Updated 2017] Councillor Les Allen Former Right Worshipful Mayor of Derby (2011/12) Les is now retired but continues with voluntary work as a Trustee of The Liversage Trust, Derby's oldest charity. As a former Mayor and Cabinet Member, and as the Vice‐Chair of Derbyshire Fire Authority, Les has a wide experience of public administration and management. Prior to entering local government Les was a teacher in Derby schools and was also the county chair of his teaching union. Les gained his initial teaching qualification from Bishop Lonsdale College and took several further professional courses all with institutions that later became the University of Derby. Before he retired he was, for a time, a Governor of the University. Les has also been active in the Diocese of Derby as a Parish Church Councillor, Deanery Representative, and Church Warden. He was a member of the Diocesan Board of Education and later became a Bishop's Advisor and commissioned research from the University. [Updated 2017] Mr John Anfield John was Head of Planning for the Peak District National Park Authority from 1978‐2002, and in retirement is a volunteer National Park Ranger. His link to the University is that he was a governor of the former High Peak College in Buxton which became part of the University‐now Buxton and Leek College. He is on the Council of the Campaign for National Parks, and is a trustee of the Friends of the Peak District. He is very much involved with music in Buxton and was on the Board of Buxton Festival from 2002‐15. He is an organist at Buxton Methodist Church. [Updated 2017] Professor Nick Antonopoulos, Pro Vice‐Chancellor – Research Professor Nick Antonopoulos was appointed to the University’s Executive team in 2017. Having joined the University of Derby in 2009 from the University of Surrey, Nick has held various roles in our University, moving to the role of Dean of the College of Engineering and Technology in 2014. As well as leading the College, Nick has demonstrated a track record in research and has been working across the University leading the ongoing activity in assessing our readiness for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2020/21. As Pro Vice‐Chancellor Research, Nick will lead and implement the University’s research strategy, being responsible for defining and enhancing research performance. He is also responsible for driving the University’s approach to REF 2020. [Updated 2017] Sensitivity: Internal Mr Brian Ashby Hon DBA FRICS Brian Ashby founded Viking Property Group in 1970 and with his son, Duncan Ashby, formed Norseman in 1988. He has developed commercial investments across the world but has always retained his head office in Derbyshire. Brian’s lateral thinking has provided a number of innovations to property development and investment. He invented a failsafe system for building on shock absorbers above railway tracks. He was the first person to arrange decennial insurance for commercial development in Britain. He introduced the US, Canadian and British governments a formula for a financial package enabling them to purchase property on a deferred basis. He founded and chaired the Ashby Charitable Trust for 25 years before converting part of it to the Ashby Fund within Derbyshire Community Foundation in 2004. The Ashby Fund’s purpose included supporting young entrepreneurs in conjunction with the Princes Trust. He was chairman of Derbyshire Community Foundation from 1996 to 2005 and is now its President. He was the Home Secretary’s representative in Derbyshire for the Police Selection Committee from 1994 to 2000. He has served on a number of boards including the National Bus Property Board, the Derbyshire Family Practitioner’s Committee and for Trent College. He was Chairman of the Advisory Board for the Faculty of Business Computing and Law at the University of Derby and a member of the Main Board. In 2016 he was appointed Derbyshire Patron of Marie Curie. Brian wrote the original screenplay for a film about Mozart’s visit to Prague in 1787 called “Interlude in Prague”. Students of the University’s School of Art performed a script reading and the film was completed in late 2016. Brian has published several books and he enjoys driving and racing classic cars. [Updated 2017] Mr Peter Ashworth DL Peter Ashworth was senior partner at Geldards law firm in Derby and Nottingham. He was HM Coroner for Derby and South Derbyshire for some 18 years and has recently retired. He was a founder member of Walbrook Housing Association and of the Derbyshire Community Foundation. He was a Trustee of Relate and of other charitable trusts. He was Deputy Chairman of Governors at Landau Forte College and became Chairman after the tragic death of Baroness Brigstocke who was also a member of the Court. Thereafter, for eleven years, he became Chairman of Landau Forte Multi Academy trust relating to six academies/schools including a sixth form college. [Updated 2017] Dr Ruth Ayres Joined the University of Derby in 2010 as Dean of Learning Enhancement, having previously worked at Salford University as Director of Learning Development and Warwick University, where she was responsible for leading the Postgraduate Programmes in Academic and Professional Practice. Dr Ayres has strategic responsibility for promoting and enhancing a high quality student learning experience at Derby through her leadership of learning and teaching (including the application of learning technologies), quality assurance and enhancement, library and learner support. Having begun her career as a Researcher, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sciences, Dr Ayres is particularly interested in the research‐teaching nexus and has established Derby’s very successful Undergraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (URSS). Dr Ayres also has experience of leading institutional learning space projects which enable the adoption of innovative and flexible pedagogies designed to enhance student learning. [Updated 2015] Emeritus Professor Ray Baines A PhD graduate in from the University of Manchester (UMIST) with 30 years’ experience of industry and Higher Education institutions. He was made a Professor in Manufacturing Systems in 1993 and employed recently at the University of Derby initially as Associate Dean (Faculty of Science and Technology) & Head of Engineering. He later became Dean of Engineering for 7 years and then Dean of Computing & Technology. On retiring from the University in 2004 he has set up his own consultancy and works with a number UK Universities and on committees associated with University Education. [Updated 2017] Sensitivity: Internal Mr Simon Baker BEd MBA Simon Baker is Joint Chief Executive of Staffordshire Moorlands and High Peak Borough Council. He was born in 1956 and lived most of his early life in Harlow and Taunton, before completing a Bed in physical education at Bradford University in 1980. During his subsequent career, Simon has worked in a variety of roles at different local authorities and in 2001 he became Chief Executive of Staffordshire Moorlands District Council. In 2007, Simon was approached by High Peak Borough Council to act as their Chief Executive and he has been the joint Chief Executive of both Councils since May 2008. Simon has a wide variety of interests including being a keen golfer as well as rock climbing and cycling. [Updated 2017] Mrs Anne Barber Anne is a FE staff member of the University’s Further Education Governance Committee. She has taught at the College for 10 years and undertakes some HE lectures, but mainly delivers FE teaching. After studying Hospitality Management in Blackpool Anne went to Australia for a 6 month working holiday! She loved everything about the country especially Queensland so stayed and worked her way up from Waitress, to Supervisor, then Duty Manager and finally Resort Manger in Airlie Beach. One regular customer who was Head of the local College asked her to help open up a Hospitality and Catering Department, which was the beginning of her teaching career. 10 years after leaving the UK she returned, went back to University to gain a qualification in teaching and taught at other colleges before joining Buxton and Leek College. [2015] Mr William Barron MBA William Barron’s original connection with the University of Derby was as an HND Mechanical engineer as a Rolls Royce Apprentice in the mid 1960s, when it was called the Derby and Derbyshire College of Art and Technology. He spent his initial career in Brazil – Salvador, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo – before returning to Derby in 1985 where he set up his own corporate clothing business Cathedral Clothing. After selling the family company in 1999 he has been working as a Business Coach and Mentor in the SME market. Having always been involved in property he and his wife purchased in 2013 a lettings agency Blue I Properties. He is now heavily involved in developing the large property portfolio for the benefit of students and professional tenants. In parallel he has been actively involved in the community as Chair of the Derby Heritage Development Trust, Governor at Mackworth College, Advisory Board of Common Purpose and founder of Derby Carbon Initiative. [Updated 2017] Chris Batten Chris was elected Vice‐President (Academic Affairs) of the University of Derby Students' Union in 2015, achieving a First Class Honours BA in History the same year. He is one of two full members of Governing Council present from the Students’ Union. Chris has aspirations to complete a PhD in History with a particular focus on British Identity in the post Second World War era, which he hopes will lead to a career in the HE sector. He was born and grew up in Melksham, Wiltshire, but he is passionate about the City of Derby and is a Governor at Homefields Primary School, Chellaston. [Updated 2016] Dame Margaret Beckett MP DBE Dame Margaret Beckett has been the Member of Parliament for Derby South since 1983. Mr Gerry Beetles, HonDBA, FIMMM Gerry Beetles is Chairman of Davis Derby Holdings Ltd, a software and electronics company that specialises in the protection of people and plant working in potentially hazardous areas. The business comprises Davis Derby Limited with 50 local staff and Davis Derby Siberia with 15 staff based in the Kuzbass region of Russia. Gerry is a former Chairman of the East Midlands CBI Regional Council. He also served for 10 years as a Non‐Executive Director of North Midland Construction plc. [Updated 2017] Sensitivity: Internal Mr David Bell, HonDUniv David joined JCB in 1974 as a graduate trainee, following an Engineering apprenticeship at Rolls Royce in Derby. He has held a variety of senior roles during his 42‐year JCB career, including Managing Director of JCB Sales/Service, JCB Agriculture, JCB’s Backhoe Loader and Telescopic Handler Business Units and Group HR Director. He has travelled extensively and lived and worked in North America for three years. He has been involved in the JCB Academy from its conception and is currently Chairman of Governors. In January 2010, David became JCB’s Chief Corporate Development Officer focussing on growth in the Agricultural business and in Brazil, China and latterly in Jaipur India. In January 2014 David was appointed as Regional Chairman for the CBI in the East Midlands, and having completed his term he is now Vice Chair. He is also a National Apprentice Ambassador. He became an Honorary Doctor of the University at the Awards Ceremonies in January 2015. [2016] Mr James Berresford, HonDUniv James was born in Derbyshire where he took his first tentative steps into the world of tourism as an ice cream van driver. After an early career in theatre management he began to specialise in the world of tourism. He played significant roles in the East Midlands region, running Sherwood Forest and taking the position of Regional Director for the Heart of England Tourist Board before joining the Northwest Development Agency as Director of Tourism. In 2010, James brought his wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role as Chief Executive of Visit England. In the run‐up to the 2012 Olympics in London, James used his expertise and commitment to partnerships to effectively position Visit England as a critical player, raising England’s profile worldwide, increasing the volume and value of tourism exports and developing England’s visitor economy. James led the development and delivery of the first ever national tourism strategy for England and the establishment of a new national tourism body, delivering major cultural programmes, multi‐million pound business development and marketing initiatives. The University awarded him an honorary doctorate in November 2016 at its Buxton ceremonies in recognition of James’s significant contribution to English tourism, whilst remaining a visible presence within Derbyshire tourism organisations. [2017] Mr Bob Betts Bob Betts is the Managing Director of Smith of Derby Limited, responsible for maintaining the company’s leadership on the world time map. As part of Bob’s commitment to the growth of his home City of Derby, Bob is also Chairman of Marketing Derby, working to attract investment and City development and Bob also sits on the Board of QUAD, the City’s newly built arts and gallery facility. Bob’s role at Smith of Derby is to re‐engineer the company to aggressively pursue new markets and clients through innovation and product development in the world of exclusive timepieces, tower clocks and important public art fabrication. He took up this exciting challenge at the start of 2007, returning to Derby following 19 years with IBM Corporation, based mainly in London. Bob was IBM UK’s Sales Director for their small and medium business division. Throughout his time with IBM, Bob held various line and executive management positions, including European product management and marketing roles. Graduating from Nottingham with a 2:1 in Construction Economics, Bob has a Diploma in Marketing and was business and leadership trained at INSEAD France. Before his management career, Bob sailed the world as an Officer in the Merchant Navy with Blue Star Ship Management Ltd. Ms Helen Bishop Helen is a linguistics graduate who came to Derby after working overseas in various project management and IT roles. In Derby she completed her Diploma in Management Studies at Derbyshire's College of HE, now the University of Derby. After working for Business in the Community, she established Common Purpose in Derby and also developed their programmes in Germany, France, Sweden and South Africa. She then joined Rolls‐Royce plc as Head of Community Investment, responsible for establishing community partnerships between the Company and a wide range of external organisations globally. After leaving Rolls‐Royce in 2013, Helen became a self‐employed Sensitivity: Internal consultant. Helen was part of the organising team for the first two Derby Book Festivals and also works for Foundation Derbyshire. She chairs the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award Committee and is also on the Sinfonia Viva Board of Trustees. [Updated 2017] Professor Sebastian Blackie Professor Sebastian Blackie was programme leader for MA Fine Art and MA Film and Photography having run the MA programme in Art and Design (MA ADAPT) at the University since 1999. His main focus is now on research although he continues to supervise PhD. He is a ceramic specialist and researcher, which in the last few years, has taken him to Norway, Denmark, Japan, Korea, India, China, Australia and New Zealand. His writing is regularly published and includes a critique of Paul Cummings WW1 instillation. His own artwork has featured in a number of books. His research interest is in the representation of landscape; outcomes include exhibitions at The Saatchi Gallery London, Sofa New York and Chicago, Mint Museum North Carolina and Galerie Besson London. His work is in a number of public and private collections including the Fu Li International Ceramic Art Museum, China. The Museum of Modern Art Boston, USA, and the Ashmolean Museum Oxford. [Updated 2017] Mr Derek Bodey Derek is a Co‐opted member of the University’s Further Education Governance Committee of Buxton and Leek College. He is a Physics graduate and was Principal of two sixth form Colleges for 14 years. Derek has been a board member of the Association of Colleges (AoC) and Council Member of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL). He is also a member of The Committee on Toxicity, the Committee on Carcinogenicity and the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme steering committee for the Food Standards Agency and Public Health England in Derbyshire. Derek is treasurer of several charities, a footpath inspector for PNFS and is involved with the Town Team. He is committed to issues of Fairtrade and Trade Justice. [Updated 2017] Professor Kevin Bonnett Professor Kevin Bonnett is the Interim PVC Dean College – Arts, Humanities and Education. Kevin previously held senior positions at Manchester Metropolitan University, Sheffield Hallam University and Regent’s University in London. [2017] Dr Huw Bowen Huw Bowen is Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council, a role he took up in May 2008. Huw holds a PhD in public health and during his time at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff worked on commissions for the World Health Organisation and the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development (OECD). Other current Board Level appointments include the Derbyshire Health and Wellbeing Board, the Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and the Board of Corporation for Chesterfield College. Huw enjoys running and mountain biking, and is a keen follower of the Wales rugby team and Chesterfield football club. [Updated 2017] Mr Gavin Boyle Gavin Boyle is the Chief Executive, Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He joined the NHS just over 20 years ago as a General Management Trainee in Liverpool. This followed University and a degree in Biological Sciences, then a short period of private industry. He spent the first part of his NHS life in and around Liverpool in both primary care and organisation hospitals, then onto Exeter and then Winchester where he was responsible for a broad range of hospital and community services. More recently he has held Board level posts as Director of Operations at the Oxford Radcliffe Trust, the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham and at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Prior to joining Derby Teaching Hospitals in March 2016 as Chief Executive, Gavin has held the position of Chief Executive at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Yeovil District NHS Foundation Trust. Gavin became Chair of East Midlands Leadership Academy in November 2013 and is Chair of the East Midlands Acute Hospitals Chief Executives Forum. [2016] Sensitivity: Internal Ms Alison Brannick Alison Brannick is Principal, Landau Forte College, Derby. She started her career as a geography teacher at a school in Essex. During a successful spell at a Derbyshire secondary school which progressed to Ofsted ‘Outstanding’, she developed from Head of Year to Assistant Head Teacher and then Deputy Head Teacher. Ms Brannick joined the College from the high performing Bethnal Green Academy which is also rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. She has a strong track record of school improvement and specialises in pastoral care and removing the barriers to achievement for all students. Ms Brannick believes that every young person deserves a world class education regardless of social background or postcode, and that there should be no excuses not to achieve highly. [2016] Emeritus Professor Chris Brannigan Born in Coventry, went to secondary school in Nuneaton. After London University started work in the Department of Psychiatry at Birmingham University, working on non‐verbal communication and later with children and the families as a clinical ethologist at the Charles Burns Clinic. Chris was a founder member of and later President of, the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy. He was recently awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Association. He has been an editor of several academic journals. Chris worked at University of Central England for many years before joining the University of Derby, getting involved in counselling and psychotherapy, particularly the supervision of research degrees. Currently the Chair of the Alcester Dementia Café, the Alcester Town’s Health and Well Being Board, as well as being Deputy Mayor for 2016‐17. [Updated 2017] Emeritus Professor Paul H Bridges MBE HonDUniv Paul Bridges joined Derby College of Art and Technology in 1972 and taught palaeontology and sedimentology on the External London Degree Programme in Geology. During the 1980s he was course leader of the BSc Earth and Life Studies programme which had replaced the External London Degree. In 1990, Paul chaired the development of the CAMS Combined Subject Programme which is now called the Joint Honours Scheme. In 1996, he was made Dean of Academic Planning and drafted the University strategic plan each year. Following the restructuring in 2003, he became Head of Research and Clerk to the Governing Council, a rather unusual dual role. He developed research training programmes for postgraduate research students. He also worked on the governance infrastructure. Paul retired in December 2013 to take up new interests. He is now a volunteer gardener restoring the gardens at St Joseph's RC Church and continues as Vice Chair of Derby Cathedral Council. He is currently writing a book on understanding British Empire stamps with lots of illustrations as always. He still runs, exploring the streets of Derby. Paul was appointed MBE in 2013 and conferred HonDUniv in 2016. [Updated 2017] Mr David W Brown OBE David Brown has over 30 years’ experience in Public Relation and Funding Management in the voluntary sector. He worked for Barnardo's for 15 years and The Children's Society for 16 years, taking early retirement from the post of Executive Officer in 2003. The work focused on funding management, strategic and structural planning, organisational image and profile, high level patronage and networking across the UK, in particular with members of the Royal Family. Since retirement he has undertaken numerous voluntary consultancy roles across the UK and in Indonesia. David was awarded The Order of The British Empire for Services to the Voluntary Sector in 2010. [Updated 2017] Mr Steve Brown Chairman Spacenow Ltd. Steve Brown was formerly member of the Governing Council and was a key member of the Finance Employment and General Purposes Committee during the period 2001 to 2008. He was Vice‐Chairman of the East Midlands Development Agency before it was dissolved. Mr Adam Buss Adam is currently the Chief Executive of QUAD, Derby's centre for creative media and film. Adam is passionate Sensitivity: Internal about communications, the arts and equality of opportunity for all. He has worked in multiple sectors including experience of working for brands such as Sony, Air France, Orange and Motorola. In the cultural and creative sector Adam has successfully built brands and audiences for QUAD, FORMAT (now the UK's largest contemporary photography festival), Derby Festé and Derby Film Festival. During his career Adam has developed communications campaigns that have reached millions of people worldwide and inspired audiences to engage with diverse and exciting cultural activities. He has specialist knowledge of experiential marketing and communications that engage diverse demographic groups. In 2010 he was named one of the most influential business people under 42 in the midlands, was an award winning stand‐up comedian in the early 2000s and he is committed to life‐long learning having recently completed a distance learning course on Gamification at the University of Pennsylvania. Adam is a proud graduate of the University of Derby. Adam is a board member of Safe and Sound, the UK’s leading charity seeking to end Child Sexual Exploitation. A trustee of the University of Derby Students’ Union, a Governor of Da Vinci Secondary School in Derby and board member of the Cinema Arts Network a leading digital agency connecting independent cinemas throughout the UK. Adam graduated from the Common Purpose Matrix course in 2010. [Updated 2017] Dr Chris Bussell Dean, College of Life & Natural Sciences Mr Brett Butcher Brett Butcher is Founder of Datapath Ltd and various other businesses. He was formerly VP of Engineering at E.A. Games. He is now engaged in new internet start‐up and consulting. He is a former student of Derby College of Art and Technology and a Rolls Royce graduate apprentice. Brett is currently the Entrepreneur in Residence for the University of Derby. [Updated 2017] Mr Neil Calvert BSc (Hons) NPQH Neil Calvert has been an independent member of Governing Council since 2011. He chairs the Remuneration and Student Affairs Committees, and became the Vice Chair of Governing Council in 2015. Neil is Chief Executive of The Northworthy Trust. He was Headteacher at The Long Eaton School from 2008 to 2016, an 11‐18 institution of 1,300 students which was one of the first in Derbyshire to convert to Academy status. In 2012 it became the only state school in the UK to open a purpose‐built astronomical observatory, and it has gained national recognition for its work in environmental education and developing an international dimension to its curriculum. It also works extensively in initial teacher training with universities in the UK and overseas. Neil led the school’s successful application to become an Academy sponsor in the summer of 2016, which resulted in the formation of The Northworthy Trust, a Multi‐Academy Trust which is taking responsibility for a number of schools in Derby and Derbyshire. Having previously worked in senior leadership roles in two other local schools, Neil also served as Executive Headteacher at King Edward VI School in Lichfield in 2014, supporting the school through a change in leadership and a successful Ofsted inspection. In 2013 he gave evidence to a Commons Education Select Committee inquiry into the role of governing bodies in schools. [Updated 2017] Emeritus Professor Neil Campbell Neil Campbell is a former Senior Research Fellow and Programme Leader of American Studies with special interests in the contemporary American West. He wrote a trilogy of books on the subject, The Cultures of the American New West (2000), The Rhizomatic West and more recently Post‐Westerns. His other interests include the cinema, travel, gardening and painting. [Updated 2017] Dr Christopher Charlton OBE HonDUniv Dr Christopher Charlton has dedicated over 40 years of his life to the conservation and restoration of the industrial heritage of the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire. In 1993 become full time director of the Cromford Mills Project; a role he kept until he retired in 2008. In 1996, he became a member of the working party on Industrial Heritage established by the Prince of Wales. It was through the influence of this working party that the law on the disposal Sensitivity: Internal of government owned Listed Buildings was changed. Hitherto, the Treasury rules required such buildings to be sold to the highest bidder. Subsequently, the decision regarding the buyer could take account of the proposed future use and the conservation of the architecture. When Prince Charles established the Prince’s Regeneration Trust, Christopher was appointed a trustee, a role he continued until December 2016. In 2001, following a very intensive campaign by the Arkwright Society and its Local Authority Partners for UK Government support led UNESCO to inscribe the Derwent Valley as a World Heritage Site. He was appointed Officer of the British Empire in 1997 for his services to the conservation of the built environment. In April 2009, Christopher was surprised and delighted to be listed in the Independent on Sunday’s list of 100 people who make Britain a better and happier place to live. [Updated 2017] Dame Bobbie Cheema‐Grubb, DBE AKC, HonDUniv The Hon. Mrs Justice Cheema‐Grubb, is a judge of the Queen's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice of England and Wales. She was born in Derby and is the first Asian woman to serve as a Justice of the High Court. Mrs Justice Cheema‐Grubb was educated at City of Leeds School, she studied law at King’s College London and was called to the bar in 1989. She undertook pupillage at 2, Hare Court, Temple subsequently specialising in prosecuting and defending cases of serious fraud, homicide and terrorism. In 2006 she was appointed Junior Treasury Counsel at the Old Bailey and then Senior Treasury Counsel: the third woman ever to achieve this elite rank. In 2007 she became a Crown Court Recorder and eventually served as a Tutor‐Judge for the Judicial College as well as teaching advocacy for Gray’s Inn and abroad for the Advocacy Training Council. She was appointed Queen's Counsel (QC) in 2014. She lives in Putney, London with her husband, Russell and children Harriet, Hugo and Antonia. Dame Bobbie was sworn in as a High Court judge on 25 November 2015. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the University in July 2016. [2016] Mr Trevor Clay, HonDEd Trevor Clay has over 25 years’ experience in further education having previously worked at Arnold and Carlton College and New College Nottingham. In his role as Principal and Chief Executive of Chesterfield College, Trevor led the remodelling of the campus to create a modern and attractive space for students. Under his leadership, the College received Beacon of Excellence in Further Education status in 2004. Trevor created Learning Unlimited in 2008, focusing on the delivery of apprenticeships through effective partnerships in the region. Learning Unlimited Apprenticeship Academies subsequently opened in Manchester, Nottingham, Matlock and Derby. This led to the College being praised by Ofsted for its best practice in employer engagement and curriculum planning. After 15 successful years at Chesterfield College, Trevor retired in 2014. Trevor still keeps ties with further education and serves as a board member at New College Nottingham. The University awarded Trevor an Honorary Doctorate of Education in 2016 in recognition of his commitment to the provision of high quality further education in Chesterfield and its impact on the local community. [2017] Mr Andrew Cochrane DL MA Andrew is Under Sheriff of Derbyshire. He was born in Chesterfield and lived in Matlock until 2007 when he moved to Derby. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen with an MA in Politics and International Relations in 1988. He went to Law College in Chester before joining Flint Bishop in 1990. He is a Senior Partner at Flint Bishop specialising in Licensing of Pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels. He serves as Local Authority Governor of Reigate Primary School at Mackworth, Derby. He was appointed Under Sheriff of Derbyshire in 2011. [Updated 2016] Mr Michael Cockerton Michel Cockerton is a retired solicitor. He graduated from Imperial College with a degree in mechanical engineering. His first degree was followed by training with Davy United Engineering Company Ltd of Sheffield. Subsequently, he attended the College of Law in 1971. He qualified as a solicitor in 1973 and becoming partner in 1974 in the firm formerly known as Cockertons situated in Bakewell, which is now part of Taylor and Emmet LLP. Currently Michael is chairman of two alms house charities and one educational endowment fund charity. He is married with three sons and five grandchildren. [Updated 2017] Mr David F Coleman, HonDUniv David served the Derbyshire and Leicestershire constabularies during his 32 year career and was Derbyshire’s Chief Constable for seven years before retiring in 2007. A former member of the Police Authority said of him that he was a very well thought of Chief Constable, who ‘dealt with matters with a no‐nonsense approach and with broad shoulders’. He is a man who is considered to be of the highest integrity. As Chief Constable, David served as a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers Terrorism and Allied Matters Committee, and became the national lead spokesman on forensic sciences. Following his retirement from the Derbyshire Constabulary he became the Chairman of Derbyshire Association for the Blind, having been a member of their board of Directors before that. In 2007 he raised money for five local and national charities that he was involved with via a 150‐mile walk around Derbyshire. David is also a trustee and the Chair of Foundation Derbyshire Grants Committee and since his retirement from the police service he has also been President of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation. David received the Queen’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2004, was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire in 2007 and most recently was sworn in as Derbyshire’s High Sheriff for the year 2014‐15. The University awarded David an Honorary Doctorate of the University in 2016 in recognition of his considerable public service as Chief Constable of Derbyshire and latterly as High‐Sheriff of the county. [2017] Mr Ken Cook CBE DL FRSA C.St.J Ken has had an extensive involvement in the public and voluntary sector. He was the head teacher of a large Sheffield Secondary School for 21 years. The school was judged as outstanding by OfSTED. He was later appointed as the head teacher of a seriously failing school that he guided through the ‘fresh start’ process. The school is now judged as very successful. During his time as a head teacher he was the Chairman of the Sheffield Education Business Partnership, a member of the Cutlers Company Strategic Education Forum, a Governor of Sheffield Hallam University and a member of the South Yorkshire Learning and Skills Council. For three years before his retirement he was the founder and Director of the Leadership Centre at Sheffield Hallam University. He was subsequently awarded a CBE for services to education. When he retired he was appointed to the voluntary role of Commander of St. John Ambulance in Derbyshire eventually becoming Chairman of the St. John Council in the County. During this time he worked with the University to develop a foundation degree in Leadership and Management in the Voluntary Sector. He was made a Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire in 2004 and a Commander of the Order of St. John in 2011. For five years Ken was Chairman of the Board of Ripplez, a social enterprise community interest company, formerly the Family Nurse Partnership within the NHS. The Ripplez family nurses work with teenage parents throughout pregnancy and until their children are two years of age. Ripplez is based in Derby but also supports parents in Derbyshire and Burton. Ken maintains his interest in education and business by being a trustee and Vice Chair of Governors of an Academy. [Updated 2017] Mr Michael Copestake Studied at Leeds University for LLB (1970 – 1973). Whilst there he was on the Union Council and represented Leeds at Squash. After leaving Leeds he trained as a solicitor in the City of London with Macfarlanes (1974‐1976). On qualification he joined Hogan Lovells, a major international legal practice. In 1978 he joined Gadsby Coxon and Copestake. In 1995 he became a partner in Freeths. He has been President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Law Society and a Founder of Marketing Derby. His interests are cricket, tennis, squash, antiques, skiing and art. Mike became Chair of Enterprise for Education in 2015. [Updated 2017] Sensitivity: Internal Emeritus Professor John Coyne, CBE, HonDUniv Professor John Coyne was Vice‐Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Derby from 2004 to 2015. Professor Coyne is an economist by original discipline with over 40 years’ experience in higher education. His research, publications and external engagement have been principally in the fields of small business, business policy and human resource management. He led the University of Derby from August 2004 and was actively engaged in the city and county throughout that time; including as a founding Director of the new Local Enterprise Partnership. His early career was at the University of Nottingham, where he was variously a member of the School of Management and Finance and the Department of Industrial Economics and Warden of Cripps Hall. He was a founder and Co‐Director of the Centre for Management Buy‐out Research and has consulted for a diverse range of companies, banks, venture capitalists and institutions. Prior to joining the University of Derby, John was Pro Vice‐ Chancellor of De Montfort University. For the past 20 years he has also been a non‐executive director of a small business that he co‐founded as a Social Enterprise, Cfe Research and Consultancy Ltd. In 2011 he was appointed as Commissioner of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and also chaired the Investment Subcommittee of the Commission. He has an active interest in sport, theatre and the arts more generally. He was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours in 2016. [2016] Mr Maxwell Craven MBEHon DLitt FSA FRSA AMA Maxwell Craven is an author, historian, conservation lobbyist and graduate of the University’s predecessor, Bishop Lonsdale College. He was with Derby Museum 1974‐1998 as Education Officer, Assistant Keeper of Archaeology and for eighteen years, Keeper of Antiquities. He is in his second term as chairman of Derby Conservation Area Advisory Committee, and former chairman of the Civic Society and the Friends of Derby Museum, a member of the Cathedral Fabric Committee, the Council of Management of the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust, the Board of Derby Cityscape, the Georgian Group, the Ancient Monuments Society and a Trustee of the Derby Bridge Chapel. In 1983 he married Carole Middleton at Derby Cathedral and they have one daughter, Cornelia. He is the author of numerous books mainly on architecture, biography and local history, including a monograph on John Whitehurst FRS. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and appointed MBE in 1999, three years after having been awarded an honorary degree by the University. He also received an Honorary Doctor of Letters in 2013. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in December 2016. [Updated 2017] Paul Cummins MBE HonMA Paul Cummins is a ceramic artist who graduated from the University of Derby in 2009 from the BA (Hons) craft degree and went on to set up his own business in Derby. Since graduating his work has been commissioned by Chatsworth, Blenheim Palace and the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. His latest work, Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red, was the country’s leading project to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and saw the installation of 888,246 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London. [2015] Sensitivity: Internal The Venerable Dr Christopher Cunliffe MA DPhil Christopher Cunliffe was installed as Archdeacon of Derby in April 2006. Christopher began his ordained ministry in the Diocese of Derby when he was Assistant Curate at St Mary and All Saints Church in Chesterfield (the famous Crooked Spire) from 1983‐1985. He worked alongside his wife who was also a Curate at the church in one of the first job‐share arrangements in the Church of England. In 1985 he became Chaplain of Lincoln College, Oxford, until 1989, when he became Chaplain of the City University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. In 1991 he took a post in the Church of England's Advisory Board of Ministry, Westminster, which involved co‐ordinating vocation and selection conferences for people seeking ordination. From 1997‐2003 he was Director of Ministry in the Diocese of London, carried out an interim role for a large educational charity, and was Chaplain to the Bishop of Bradwell in the Diocese of Chelmsford from 2004‐2006. Christopher's wife, Helen, was formerly Archdeacon of St Albans and the couple were the first husband and wife Archdeacons in the Church of England. They have two grown‐up children, Edward and Jacob. Christopher is a keen historian, with a doctorate in the subject and a continuing interest in research and writing. He also has an interest in African history and culture – particularly in Angola and Mozambique ‐ stimulated by recent visits there. To relax, he enjoys reading fiction and poetry, listening to music, and watching sport. Emeritus Professor Huw Davies Professor Huw Davies was Dean of the College of Arts and the Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology at the University of Derby, posts he held from 2007. Prior to that he held senior academic positions at a number of Universities in the UK and USA, including 13 years at Edinburgh Napier University, where he was Head of the School of Arts and Creative Industries. As a filmmaker and photographer his work has been extensively exhibited, published and broadcast over the last 30 years and has included commissions for the Arts Council of England, BBC, Creative Scotland and the Discovery Channel and screenings at over 100 international film festivals. In 2004 he founded the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival in England’s most northerly town and is and is currently Chair of its Board. Closer to home, he is a steering group and jury member for the Format International Photography Festival and is a current and former trustee of several arts and cultural organisations including QUAD, UK Young Artists and Derby Theatre. [Updated 2017] Mrs Olivia Dean BA Dip Ed Management Olivia Dean is an Independent Member of Governing Council and Chair of the Further Education Governance Committee. Olivia was Strategic Director at the Joseph Wright Centre and Clerk to the Corporation at Derby College from 2004 until her retirement in 2006. During 2006‐7 she served as Acting Assistant Dean and Head of Further Education at the University of Derby Buxton. Olivia gained a Teacher's Certificate at Homerton College of Education, Cambridge before taking a BA degree with the Open University and a Diploma in Education Management at Derbyshire College of Higher Education. She taught at local schools and held senior management positions in two secondary comprehensives between 1968 and 1989 before taking a series of Assistant Principal posts at Derby Tertiary College, Wilmorton. In 1997 she became Clerk to the Corporation of Derby College and was also employed by Derby PRIDE Limited and Derby City Council. Olivia was a member of the Derbyshire Learning and Skills Council from 2001 to 2005 and has served as a representative on two national examination boards. She is currently a governor of an inner city primary school. Olivia has also worked for the voluntary sector as a board member, previously for Community Education and Training Association, and currently for the Padley Group and the Royal Crown Derby Museum Trust. Additionally she is a governor of an inner city primary school in Derby. [Updated 2016] His Grace the Duke of Devonshire KCVO CBE DL, Chancellor of the University The Duke of Devonshire was educated at Eton and Exeter College Oxford, where he received an Honours degree in Modern History. After leaving Oxford he spent one year studying farming and agriculture and then went to work in the book publishing industry where he remained until his early thirties. Since then he has devoted the greater part Sensitivity: Internal of his time to his family businesses, including assisting in the management of the family estates in Derbyshire, Eastbourne in Sussex, Lismore in Ireland, and Bolton Abbey in North Yorkshire. In 1967 he married Amanda Heywood Lonsdale and they have three children. The Duke is Chairman of the Devonshire Arms Hotels, which includes the Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel at Bolton Abbey and the Devonshire Fell Hotel at Burnsall, both in Yorkshire; and the Devonshire Arms in Beeley, Derbyshire. The Duke was appointed a Trustee of the Sheffield Galleries and Museums Trust in 2006, and was appointed a Trustee of the Wallace Collection in London, the Storm King Art Centre in New York. He has been a Patron of the Sheffield Botanical Gardens Trust in 2007. In 1980 the Duke was elected to the Jockey Club and served as Senior Steward [Chairman] for 5 years from 1989. In 1997 he was made Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot Racecourse, a position he still holds. He was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for services to racing in 1997. At the request of the Federation Equestre Internationale, the Duke chaired the International Eventing Safety committee during 2000, which produced a number of significant proposals for the improved safety of horses and riders in Three‐Day Eventing. He has held the position Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s since 1996. The Duke of Devonshire works with many charities and organisations both local to the Estates and nationally. The Duke was appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) for his services to the Crown in the New Year’s honours 2009. Dr Peter Dewhurst, Director Strategic Projects, External Affairs Peter has worked in higher education since 1987 taking on senior management roles first at the University of Wolverhampton and then in 2007 at the University of Derby’s Buxton Campus, first as Assistant Dean, then in 2008 as Dean and in 2012 as Strategic Director with responsibility for both the HE curriculum and commercial offer at the University’s Buxton campus. During this period Peter’s “Real World Learning” vision for applied vocational learning contributed to the Buxton based Tourism and Hospitality degree programmes being ranked first in the UK in the Guardian Subject League table of May 2014. In August 2014 Peter took on the role of founding Director of the University Strategic Partnerships Unit. The Unit’s vision was “to enhance the University’s reputation and build its income streams through delivering inspirational and innovative partnerships that positively impact on the communities and other stakeholders with which the partners engage”. The Unit’s remit included overseas partnerships, UK academic partnerships and corporate partnerships that relate to the University’s core teaching and learning proposition. In addition, the Unit was tasked with driving the University’s Higher and Degree Apprenticeship strategy, managing the commercial “Real World Learning” operation at the University’s Buxton campus and ensuring the successful launch, in autumn 2016, of the University’s newest campus in Chesterfield. The Unit was successful in establishing enhanced partnership related operating systems that helped deliver an extremely positive outcome in the University’s most recent institutional audit, whilst also delivering growth in the volume of partnership business. Other successes included a marked growth in commercial income from the Buxton campus and the opening of the Chesterfield campus on time and within budget. In October 2016, Peter was given the role of Director of Strategic Projects, with responsibility for driving key institution wide initiatives including the re‐visioning of the University’s Buxton campus. [Updated 2017] Mr Nigel Downs Nigel Downs is Managing Director of Choices Housing Association one of the leading specialist housing, care and support organisations in the country and part of the Wrekin Housing Group. He has extensive experience of the statutory and voluntary sectors having held a number of senior management positions and board appointments. His voluntary sector experience spans over 20‐years and includes 10‐years as Chairman of AgeUK (North Staffordshire) where he still remains as a non‐executive Director and Trustee. Previously he was a Trustee of Age Concern Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and Vice Chairman of Newark and Sherwood Council for Voluntary Services. For a number of years he served as Landlord representative with the Tenant Participation Advisory Service (TPAS) and was a member of the National Consultative Forum. He is an Independent Co‐opted Member of the Further Education Governance Committee of Buxton and Leek College and was previously a governor at Leek College. He is married with 2 children and lives in Sandbach, Cheshire. [Updated 2017] Sensitivity: Internal Councillor Lance Dowson, Former Mayor of the High Peak Born and grew up in North Wales. Qualified as a Social Worker in Mental Health at Liverpool University, qualified as a teacher at Manchester University and was awarded a MA in Psychology by Keele University. Lance has undertaken a variety of voluntary work over the past 60 years. In 1986 he established and has, since then, personally funded and managed two voluntary organisations, The Cosmetic Surgery Helpline and Mantalk, a helpline for male victims of domestic violence. He moved into education in 1972 lecturing at Stockport College, worked with the Hester Adrian Research Centre at Manchester University and lectured both there and at Salford College. Lance moved to New Mills in 1986 and since1999 he has served the residents of New Mills and the High Peak through his work on the Town and Borough Councils. He has twice been the Mayor of New Mills 2001/2 and 2006/7 and was the Mayor of the High Peak in 2002/3. He is a member of many voluntary organisations and is a member of the Stepping Hill NHS Foundation Trust and a Trustee of the High Peak CAB. He has been elected as the Public Governor for High Peak and Dales, Tameside and Glossop on the Stockport NHS Foundation Trust Hospital and also Chairman of the Hayfield branch of the Royal British Legion. His interests are his Council work, his voluntary organisations, his narrow boat, conservation, the environment, reading and walking. [Updated 2017] Mr George Dutton George Dutton is the Managing Director, George Dutton Ltd. He started his business life in civil engineering works through the 70s which ultimately lead into building industrial premises for the company’s main depot. He then expanded the business property venture and developed a business park on the airfield at Ashbourne which has some very technical and innovative companies trading throughout every continent of the world. His first involvement with the University was in 2001, providing and helping to set up an information Learning Centre on the Airfield Industrial Estate at Ashbourne, liaising with both the University and local companies to highlight the opportunities available through the learning centre for employees to attain the European Driving Licence qualification in IT. Seeing the information technology involved in every aspect of business life today, highlights the crucial importance of having an approachable local University, interfaced in development of systems and products with as many as possible local companies, for the development of students and future employees. George is currently involved in an environmental and engineering studies project, working with the University’s Professor Aradhana Mehra and her team. [Updated 2017] Mr James Eaglesfield James Eaglesfield is the non‐teaching staff governor on the University’s Governing Council. He is the University’s head of governance and IT Portfolio within the IT department of the University of Derby. Since joining the University in 1998 he has held a series of roles within IT Services. He is currently responsible for information security, data protection, freedom of information and IT project management within the University. Prior to joining the University, James trained at the Queens Medical Centre to become an Audiology Technician. His outside interests include walking, photography and cycling and he regularly rides the infamous Paris – Roubaix cycle sportif. [Updated 2017] Professor James Elander James Elander is Professor of Health Psychology and Head of the University’s Centre for Psychological Research. He is a National Teaching Fellow and an HCPC‐registered health psychologist, with special interests in pain coping and pain management in chronic illnesses including haemophilia and sickle cell disease. This includes the development and evaluation of interventions to improve people’s readiness to self‐manage chronic pain, and research on hospital pain management and on ways that people use pain medication. He also has a strong interest in student writing, and developing ways to help students improve their writing and avoid plagiarism. [Updated 2017] Sensitivity: Internal Mr Bob Faithorn Bob Faithorn joined the University in 1990 as Head of the School of Humanities and helped to implement the new undergraduate Credit Accumulation Modular Scheme. As a historian who maintained a commitment to personal engagement with teaching, he has sustained a strong interest in the Arkwright Society over many years. Mrs Dawn Foote Dawn Foote is Co‐Founder and Managing Director of Katapult. Having come to the City to study Photography at the University of Derby, upon graduating in 2001 she established Katapult, a marketing agency in the City which last year was recognised as a Top 50 creative business by The Telegraph and Creative England. Dawn is committed to the growth of the digital sector in the region and sits on the advisory panel to Mainframe which has a remit to develop Derby’s digital and creative community. In addition, Dawn is committed to the cultural offering of the City and is Board member of Derby Theatre and advises on QUAD’s Commercial Board to help identify and drive new commercial opportunities/product development for the venue. With 15 years’ experience Dawn works closely with SMEs and global businesses to deliver results driven creativity. Her role at Katapult involves identifying new opportunities, building long term strategic partnerships, R&D and developing the ‘big ideas’ within the business. In addition, Dawn works directly with clients on driving innovation through new product development, and identifying new market opportunities. Dawn is married to Simon and they recently became parents to daughter Libby. They have a large chocolate Labrador called Yogi and Dawn enjoys exploring the great outdoors, travelling, film, photography and would like one day to do more scuba diving in tropical waters. Last year the company created 1,160 new jobs and was awarded International Trade ‘Team of the Year’. In 2012 Business Insider magazine identified John as being in the top 25 most influential people in the midlands. Previously, John was managing director of a regeneration company that worked across the UK, executive director of a Chamber of Commerce and non‐executive director of City Challenge. John served as Chairman of the United Nations Association Youth Council for the UK and was an executive member of the International Student movement for the UN, based in Geneva. John has a BA (Honours) in Politics and Government from the City of London Polytechnic (1981) and is a graduate of the UK Leadership Forum at Oxford University (1995) and the Columbia University Business School Executive FMDA programme in New York City (2001/2). John's passion is the development of cities and he has led Urban City Tours of Baltimore, USA; been Project Leader on a World Bank entrepreneur initiative in Bosnia and has given keynote presentations on city development across Europe. John enjoys city travel and holds a season ticket for Derby County, which he has done since the age of nine. Professor Dawn Forman Dawn was a Dean of Faculty at the University of Derby for 12 years and over the last 10 years she has been privileged to work on a freelance basis with universities and health services internationally. Her main areas of work include leadership development, executive coaching, research development and interprofessional education. She is an associate, for the Higher Education Academy, the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and a senior associate of Ranmore Consulting. Dawn is widely published, including eight books and over 100 peer reviewed articles and she has been a key note speaker at numerous international conferences. From 1999 to 2013 she was a governor of the University of Derby, latterly as Vice Chairman. The University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate in 2014. In 2008 Liz became Chair of Derwent Stepping Stones, a neighbourhood nursery. In 2011 she joined the board of YMCA Derbyshire supporting their work with homeless young people. In June 2012 Liz was appointed as HRH The Prince of Wales Ambassador for the East Midlands through his patronage of Business in the Community. She was President of the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce in 2015 and a business representative on the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership until 2016. Liz is a governor at Landau Forte Academy Moorhead and was on the Board of Derby Manufacturing UTC. She sat on the Department of Justice Derbyshire Advisory Board from 2006 to 2015 and was the Chair of Derbyshire Dales Careline from 2011 to 2013. Liz was awarded a CBE for Services to the Healthcare Products Industry in 2014 and was made a Deputy Lieutenant for the County of Derbyshire. [Updated 2017] Mrs Jennifer Fry Jennifer was a member of the Executive of the University of Derby from 1993 to 2007 becoming Deputy Vice Chancellor (Services). In her early career, after graduating as a Geographer from the University of Birmingham in 1969, she worked for BP and then as a member of the administration of the University of Nottingham. She joined the Derbyshire College of Higher Education in September 1984 and moved quickly from a faculty role to become Academic Registrar in 1987. She was instrumental in setting up the administrative structures of the University and became Clerk to the Governors from 1992 to 1995. During her membership of the Executive she had responsibility for a wide range of departments including HR, Marketing, Computing Services, Estates, Quality Assurance, Student Services as well as Academic Administration. She led many major projects at the University including Estates projects such as the Learning Centre, T‐Block and the Clinical Skills Suite, Britannia Mill and the latter stages of the Devonshire Royal Hospital conversion. She also led IT, timetabling, and space norms projects, set up the One Stop Shop, the Research Office and the International Office, and created the University Planning Model. She played key roles in the development of E‐Learning, the Awards Ceremonies, and the establishment of and liaison with the Students’ Union. [Updated 2017] Mr Peter Gadsby Peter Gadsby was born and brought up in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. In the 1970s he played as a professional footballer in the United States but a serious injury put an end to his promising career in football. Peter resumed his education. He took an HND in Business Studies at Derby College of Art and Technology and gained a place at Hull University. However, before he could take up his place, he was tempted by a business opportunity and took up a marketing position with Northern Foods. He was highly successful and became Marketing Director of Northern Foods. He subsequently accepted the position of Marketing Director with the international dairy company Kerrygold Foods. Peter’s ambition and entrepreneurial flair took him into fashion retailing and then into residential and commercial property development. Over the years he has created a number of property and investment companies each with a particular focus. Ark Capital, his holding company, owns Cedar House Investments which was created in the mid‐1990s to develop property on Derby’s Pride Park. Miller Birch, in which he has a 50% stake, specialises in commercial property schemes. He recently sold his housing company Radleigh Homes to Redrow for a significant sum, this was one of the largest transactions in this sector in the area. Peter still holds considerable land tranches still to be brought forward for planning. When Peter developed a new property scheme on the site of the Sensitivity: Internal former Nestlé factory at Ashbourne, he named one of the streets after his father, Bernard Gadsby Way. Peter joined Derby County Football Club in 1991 and as Vice Chairman he spearheaded the club’s successful move to Pride Park. In 2006, Peter led a consortium of local businessmen which purchased the club to rescue it from debts of over £50 million. In the following season the Rams won promotion to the Premier League and the financial situation began to stabilise. He stepped down from the chairmanship in October 2007 to concentrate on his core businesses. Peter was an original Board member of the East Midlands Regional Development Agency and he has served on the board of the regeneration company Cityscape. He has also raised over £100,000 for charities and in 2009 completed a trip cycling across the Sinai desert for the British Heart Foundation ‘Little Tickers’ campaign. [Updated 2017] Mrs Jean Gemmell FRSA former Mayor of Amber Valley Jean Gemmell was elected a councillor for Kilburn, Denby and Holbrook ward in May 2006, representing the borough on the AV housing Board, AV Community Transport Board and ACE East Midland Arts. Jean Gemmell retired from full‐time employment as chief executive of the Derby based education trade union, Professional Association of Teachers (PAT now VOICE) in December 2005. She joined as Senior Professional Officer in January 1999, becoming Deputy General Secretary in April 1999 and General Secretary in June 2001. Prior to PAT, Jean Gemmell was Head Teacher of Fernwood Comprehensive School in Nottingham. A teacher of physics and mathematics for 34 years, she was Deputy Head of John Flamsteed School in Denby and Friesland School in Sandiacre before taking up the headship at Fernwood, which achieved Beacon School of Excellence status in 1998. Jean was a council member and area convenor for the Secondary Heads Association (now ASCL). Jean is married with three grown‐up children. Her hobbies include antiques, interior decoration and entertaining. She is Artistic Director of Present Company and is well known in the Midlands for her work in musical theatre. Jean is a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and received a Derby City Council Civic Award in May 2003 in recognition of her contribution to performing arts in the city. She is a Trustee of Djanogly Learning Trust, Nottingham and a former trustee, now a patron of the Teaching Awards Trust. [Updated 2017] Sensitivity: Internal Mr Ian Gibbard BSc Econ ACMA Ian served on the University’s Governing Council for 9 years until 2015 and held the positions of Vice‐Chair and also Chair of the Strategy, Finance & Planning Committee during his term. Ian graduated from the London School of Economics in 1971 and qualified as an accountant whilst working for the Ministry of Defence in London, where he became chief accountant of an engineering business. He joined The Post Office initially as head of finance in East Anglia before relocating to Derbyshire in 1986 to manage a number of IT change programmes, including the automation of the UK's 17,000 post offices. Ian was subsequently appointed as a Director of Royal Mail IT organisation, where he had responsibility for business strategy, finance and HR before taking the commercial lead on a £2bn outsource of the company's IT services in 2003. He has subsequently provided consultancy on business transformation and IT strategy. Ian is a member of the governing body of NHS North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group. [Updated 2017] Ms Lesley Giles, MA Lesley is currently Director at the Work Foundation, which is a leading provider of analysis, evaluation, policy advice and know‐how in the UK around workplace innovation and the world of work. In this role she leads a work programme seeking to champion Good Work and to improve policy and business practices to drive better outcomes for individuals and businesses and inclusive growth. Prior to this, Lesley was Deputy Director and Company Secretary at the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, where she provided guidance on skills and employment issues to Industry and Government, with a particular focus on supporting business‐led action and innovation. In addition, Lesley has worked in a variety of other roles across government undertaking skills and/or employment research and policy advice including: Acting Director for Strategy and Research (2006‐08), and Head of Research (2002‐06), at the Sector Skills Development Agency (an umbrella organisation, set up in 2002 to license and performance manage the Sector Skills Councils); and a senior researcher for the Department for Education and Employment, the Employment Service, and the Cabinet Office. Prior to joining the government, Lesley was a researcher for the Institute for Employment Studies, the University of Portsmouth's Business School, and the University of Central England. She is a graduate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. [Updated 2016] Mr Mark Greasley BA, MBA Mark is a twice graduate of the University of Derby, having completed a BA Business Studies in 2009, and his MBA in 2011. He completed his studies whilst building his career for the past twenty years within the Wellglade Group where he holds the position of Group Projects Director. Wellglade is the parent company of local bus operator trent barton and other subsidiaries within the East Midlands. Mark has been responsible for many technological innovations introduced to trent barton for the benefit of its customers, and has also led the groups’ involvement in the bid to construct and operate the extended NET Tram network in Nottingham in recent years, where he continues to sit on the Board of the operating company, Nottingham Trams. His varied interests outside of work include travelling, walking and voluntary work for charity. [Updated 2017] Mrs Annie Hall Annie Hall is Chair of Pickup Holdings Limited, a group of companies which, among other interests, is involved in the plastic coatings industry and also owns a marina in the South West. She is Chair of Umbrella, a Derby based charity, which helps physically disabled children and young adults. She is also a Trustee of Foundation Derbyshire and will be High Sheriff of Derbyshire 2017/18. He is currently Deputy Chair and Senior Independent Director of Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Chair of Derbyshire Community Foundation, Director and Chairman of Regional Audit Committee of the Learning and Skills Council, Director of both the British Chamber of Commerce Limited and the Derbyshire Sensitivity: Internal and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce Limited. Professor Richard Hall PhD (Sheff), BEng (Hons), FIMechE, CEng, Executive Director for Strategic Research & Innovation Previous to coming to the University of Derby in 2013 Richard has had various leadership roles in research, innovation and business engagement, in both Russell group and new universities. He has a background of high level engagement for R&D and innovation with industry creating significant impact with major OEMs and supply chain SMEs. His research leadership was recognised in his election to national expert panels such as the Research Assessment Panels for RAE 2008, and REF 2014. At Derby he was the inaugural director for the Institute of Innovation in Sustainable Engineering, followed by Director of Research & Innovation, and has been instrumental in forming the University of Derby Science Park. Currently as Strategic Director he is University representative for the Midlands Engine, and the collaboration with the Midlands Enterprise Universities, supporting the Vice Chancellor in regional engagement with industrial stakeholders, local government and collaborating universities. He also chairs the University Research Committee leading academic quality of our research activities. He is also a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and a Professor of Engineering Design & Simulation. [Updated 2017] Mr Tony Hams OBE BSc MA HonDUniv Tony Hams has an honours degree in Geography (London) and a Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning (Nottingham). He practised as a town planner for a number of local authorities before working for 20 years, nationally and internationally, on sustainable development policy and advocacy for UK government and local government. He was Chair of the Green Alliance form 1985 to 2006. He ‘came home’ to Derbyshire in 1998 and was appointed by government to the Peak District National Park Authority and was Chair of the Authority for 10 years until 2008. He was Chair of the Association of National Park Authorities from 2005 until 2008, a Countryside Agency board member from 2000 to 2006 and Chair of the East Midlands Committee for the Heritage Lottery Fund from 2005 until 2008. Tony was a board member of Natural England from 2005‐2011. He was also a member of East Midland’s regional sports board. He was Chair of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust for 6 years until 2016 and remains a Trustee. He was a Director of the National Forest Company for 10 years until 2014. He is currently a member of the national Joint Committee on Conservation, JNCC and a member of national regional committees of the National Trust. He received an OBE for services to sustainable development in 1999, and an honorary doctorate from the University in 2009. He is passionate about his family, the landscapes of the Peak District, most things Italian and Liverpool FC. [Updated 2017] Mr Charles W. Haycock HonDUniv The firm of William Haycock is one of the oldest clock making businesses in the United Kingdom, still controlled by the original family. The business has been run under the Haycock name since circa 1826 but its roots can be traced back to 1740. Charles took over the business from his father in 1977, and only recently handed the reins to his son Neil. Born in 1934, Charles left school at 14 to join the family’s clock making business which was over 100 years old at that time. Apart from a stint in the RAF doing National Service in this country and Kenya he has been a clockmaker ever since. Over the years Charles has been involved in numerous interesting ventures, including a large project in conjunction with the Arkwright Society to provide working replica machinery for a museum in Germany, where no plans or drawings for the clock works existed. He was awarded a certificate of excellence by the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and is also a Fellow of the British Horological Institute. The University awarded Charles an Honorary Doctorate in 2016 in recognition of Charles’s unique expertise, his services to horology and outstanding contribution to Derbyshire’s heritage. [2017] Sensitivity: Internal Professor Dennis Hayes Dennis is Professor of Education at the University of Derby and the Director of the influential campaign group Academics For Academic Freedom (AFAF). In 2009 he edited and contributed to a special edition of the British Journal of Educational Studies on Academic Freedom and he writes regularly in the national and international press on free speech and academic freedom. His latest book is The ‘Limits’ of Academic Freedom (forthcoming, July 2017). In the educational world he is well‐known for his controversial co‐authored book The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education (2008) which has been described as ‘one of the most important books to have been written in at least the last twenty years in that crucial area where philosophy, policy and practice coincide’. [Updated 2017] Mrs Tina Heathcote Tina served on the University’s Governing Council for 3 years until 2015 and held the position of Chair of the Further Education Governance Committee. Formerly a business development consultant specialising in management development and in stimulating business growth both in the UK and overseas. A career starting in the Civil Service led to the appointment as Chief Executive of the agri‐tourism marketing organisation, Farm Stay UK, and on to a range of innovative and interesting projects and appointments. Projects included ‘Developing Entrepreneurial Skills in Masurian Women’, defining a marketing strategy for Stanstead airport, developing farm diversification workshops for defra and project delivery for the national tourist boards including tourism business improvement; ensuring quality through developing bespoke training programmes. [Updated 2015] Miss Wendy Holden HonDLitt Wendy Holden is a number one bestselling writer and the author of ten consecutive Sunday Times top ten bestselling novels. She was born in Yorkshire and went to Cambridge, graduating with a BA (Hons) in English Literature. She worked as a journalist on the Sunday Times, The Mail on Sunday, Tatler, Harper’s Bazaar and the Sunday Telegraph before becoming a full‐time writer. She is a literary critic; reviewing books for the Daily Mail and has been a Costa Novel prize judge. She also has a regular Country Life column and writes features, travel pieces and short stories for many other national publications, regularly promoting her adopted county of Derbyshire in her work. [2015] Mr Roger Hollick HonDBA Roger Hollick retired in 1999 after 30 years with Derbyshire Building Society; 22 years as Chief Executive. He has held non‐executive roles in several national bodies dealing with trade, policy, housing, training and regulatory affairs. He joined the Governing Council of Derbyshire College of Higher Education in 1988 and when the College became a University, he continued to serve as a University governor until 2001. He was a Trustee Director of Derbyshire Student Residences Ltd, a non‐executive director of Derby Hospitals from 1999 to 2007 and he is a former Deputy Chair of Derbyshire Community Foundation. [Updated 2017] Dr Paula Holt Dean, College of Health & Social Care Mr Richard Horsley After a career in journalism and then communications with the CBI, Richard founded Derby‐based QED Public Relations Limited in 1991. Richard is a Past President of East Midlands (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire) Chamber of Commerce and stood down as a main board Director in 2016. He is Chairman of Derbyshire Economic Partnership and was an inaugural Board member of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership Sensitivity: Internal (retiring by rotation in 2015). Whilst on the LEP Board, he chaired the D2N2 Skills Commission. [Updated 2017] Mrs Gill Howland, BEd (Hons), MEd, FRSA Throughout her career Gill has championed education as the key means of opening opportunities to people. She has extensive experience in strategic leadership across the compulsory education sector as well as in further and higher education. She has always chosen to work in disadvantaged areas and has a track record in educational improvement and widening opportunities. From 2007 to 2012, Gill served as a board member, then Deputy Chair of CILT, the National Centre for Languages. She was also Vice Chair, then Chair of the YMCA’s national training organisation, as well as a board member of YMCA North Staffordshire. Between 1999 and 2007, she was involved in regeneration work in Merseyside and the West Midlands, where she chaired a multi‐agency group developing education and training. At present, she is Chair of Governors of a rapidly improving Secondary Academy in Stoke on Trent, a Governor of a village primary school. Gill was a Co‐opted member of the University’s Further Education Governance Committee of Buxton and Leek College before becoming a member of the University’s Governing Council in 2016. Gill now works independently as an advisor consultant. She is very active in education governance, and in demand as a facilitator, reviewer and speaker. Gill is currently Chair of the British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Society. Her outside interest include running, cycling and swimming. She loves dancing. For the past seven years she has been Chair of a local choir and she also attempts to play guitar in a local band. Since 2008, she has been a volunteer ranger for Natural England, checking weekly on ponies, sheep and the beautiful landscape of the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District. [Updated 2016] Professor Robert Hudson Robert Hudson is University Professor in European History and Cultural Politics at the University of Derby, and Director of the Identity, Conflict and Representation Research Centre. A graduate of the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University of London, he held a Yugoslav government scholarship as a Post‐Graduate Fellow at the University of Sarajevo. In the 1980s he lectured at Exeter College of Art and Design and the University of Rennes (France). Robert is a faculty member of the EU‐funded European Doctoral Enhancement Network (EDEN) in Peace and Conflict Research. He has re‐visited Yugoslavia and its successor states frequently since 1995, and during the 1990s participated on six missions with the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) as an election supervisor. He co‐edited Politics of Identity: Migrants and Minorities in Multicultural States (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2000), Different Approaches to Peace and Conflict Research (University of Deusto, 2008) and Peace, Conflict and Identity: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Research (University of Deusto, 2009). Mr Christopher Hughes BSc HonDLitt ‐ Chair of Governing Council Chris has been associated with the University since 2001, initially as a Trustee and then Chair of Finance Committee, before becoming Vice‐Chair and eventually taking the Chair’s role in 2011. After graduating in Chemistry from Sheffield University in 1971 he went to the BBC as a studio manager in the overseas service. From there he worked in local and network radio as a presenter and producer with a particular interest in politics, finance and agriculture. Chris moved to Nottingham in 1980 as Programme Controller at Radio Trent and subsequently became Managing Director. He oversaw the growth of the company into Leicester and Derby and as the industry consolidated moved into National Operations specialising in mergers and acquisitions and business analysis. He retired in 2008 as a Business Development Director with GCap Media, at the time the country’s largest commercial radio company owners of Classic FM and over 50 local radio companies nationwide. He is a founding Trustee of Age UK, the charity formed by combining the strengths of Age Concern and Help the Aged and is Chair of their Nominations and Remuneration Committees. Locally he is a driver with the Soar Valley Community Bus. His personal passion is birding, travelling extensively in Europe, the Middle East and Asia and is Sensitivity: Internal treasurer of Nottinghamshire Birdwatchers and the Ornithological Society of the Middle East. [Updated 2016] Mrs June Hughes, Secretary, Registrar and Clerk to Council June Hughes is University Registrar, Clerk and heads up the Registry at the University of Derby. This role spans all aspects of academic administration leadership, including student service support, across all sites. The early part of June’s career was spent at the Halifax Building Society and subsequently Debenhams PLC. June has worked at the University (and its predecessor Derbyshire College of Higher Education) since 1987. She joined the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology as the Senior Administrative Officer with her career journey including posts of; Assistant Registrar Admissions, Deputy and then Academic Registrar, Director of Student Support and Information Services and most recently Registrar. June is qualified through the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. She is a fellow and Council member of the Association of University Administrators, and a member of both the Association of Heads of University Administration and Academic Registrar’s Council. Her leisure interests include horse riding, skiing, and heritage and history. She is also a keen football supporter of both Liverpool and Burton Albion. Dr Robert Hunter HonDUniv (Buxton 2014) Dr Hunter was born in Ayrshire, Scotland first obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Biology from the University of St Andrews, followed by a medical degree from the University of Wales and a law degree from Manchester Metropolitan University. He is a founding member of the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and in 2014 received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Derby. He was appointed her Majesty’s Coroner for Derby and Derbyshire in 2007 and prior to that had served as a Medical Officer in the British Army and as a Forensic Medical Examiner to Merseyside Police. His main medical career was in the field of Accident and Emergency Medicine. Dr Hunter sits on a number of committees nationally in relation to areas of forensic and legal medicine and is committed to teaching and education and lectures extensively in the fields of coronial law, medical law, forensic medicine and mass fatality contingency planning. [2015] Mrs Dianne Jeffrey CBE DL HonDUniv HonDocSHU Dianne M Jeffrey was Pro‐Chancellor & Chairman of Governing Council of the University of Derby from 2002 to 2011. Dianne is chairman of Age UK, the foremost age charity in the UK providing support and information to people in later life, and of Age International which supports older people in developing countries. She served on the board of University and Colleges Employers' Association (UCEA) and chaired the National Health and Safety Forum in higher education. Dianne served as an NHS Trust chairman for 13 years, chairman of the NHS Confederation from 2000‐2003 and served as chairman of Anchor Trust for five years. In 2008 Dianne became chairman of Digital Outreach Ltd, a community messaging start‐up company. She has served on the Heritage Lottery Fund East Midlands regional committee, and also as vice‐chairman of the historic Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site in Derbyshire. She is a Trustee of the Devonshire Educational Trust, Chatsworth, Derbyshire, and also chairs the Peak District National Park Advisory Group. Dianne served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 2002/3 and is now an appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Derbyshire. Dianne's appointment as Honorary Colonel, Derbyshire Army Cadet Force, (Mercian Regiment) was approved by HM The Queen in 2003. Dianne was appointed CBE in the Birthday Honours in 2011. She was awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Derby in 2012 and from Sheffield Hallam University in 2014. Dianne was educated at Badminton School, Bristol, and Sheffield University. [Updated 2017] Mrs Parminder Johal Parminder is a lecturer in Accounting at the University of Derby and was appointed as a teaching staff member of Governing Council in 2014. He served as Cabinet member for the Environment and Direct Services between 1994‐2000 and again in 2001‐2002. He became Mayor of Derby 2000‐2001. [Updated 2017] Mr John Kirkland OBE HonDUniv John Kirkland is Chairman of the privately owned Bowmer & Kirkland Group which comprises 27 construction, engineering and development companies with a combined turnover of £850 M. John is also President of four companies in the USA within the Homeland Securities field. He was Chair of Derbyshire Learning Skills Council from 2000‐2008 and the LSC East Midlands Regional Board from 2004‐2008. John was appointed OBE in 1999 for services to Derbyshire and awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Derby in 2001. John is a Governor of Landau Forte College, Derby and a National Literacy Trust Reading Champion. John was the longest serving Director of Derby County Football Club. He became President in 2006, leaving in 2008 following the change in ownership. [Updated 2017] Dr David Knibb BSc MSc PhD FIMA FBCS CEng CMath David Knibb was employed at Derby as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology and later as Dean of the School of Mathematics and Computing for a total of 11 years. On leaving Derby he worked for Westminster University on a Project in Nigeria for 18 months. He is a firm friend of Derby and Africa. Mr Scott Knowles Scott Knowles is Chief Executive of East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire). He has worked within the Chamber network since 1999 when he first joined what was then North Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce, initially providing advice and support to businesses with regard to ICT and e‐commerce solutions. Subsequent mergers with South Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire Chambers of Commerce have led to the formation of East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire). Prior to 1999 Scott worked in the Information Communications Technology sector. Scott’s key area of expertise is business development, creating sustainable revenue streams from a variety of sources including securing public and private sector business support contracts and revenue generating property solutions. [2016] Professor Judith Lamie, Pro Vice‐Chancellor Professor Judith Lamie joined the University on 1 July 2016. This new PVC role is primarily responsible for developing the University’s relationships with external partners to deliver a global network of academic and commercial activities supporting wealth creation and corporate responsibility. [2016] Mr Gordon Lammie MA (Cantab) Gordon Lammie worked for the Open University from its inception in 1970 until 2010 in a number of different roles and locations including its headquarters in Milton Keynes and in the USA but predominantly as a senior member of the University's regionally‐based staff. From 1986 onwards he was a Regional Director ‐ initially in the North West and since 1992 in the East Midlands. He sat on a range of bodies external to the University. These included the Steering Committee of the East Midlands Universities Association (alongside the Vice‐Chancellors of all the region's universities) and the East Midlands Regional Assembly (as the Higher Education representative). He was Chairman of the Nottingham Healthcare NHS Trust and has been a member of the Court of the University of Derby since 1999. Gordon was chair of the Board of Directors of the Nottingham Park Estate Ltd. From 2006 to 2010 he chaired the Strategic Management Board of the HEFCE‐funded Lifelong Learning Network incorporating four universities, two of which were the Open University in the East Midlands and the University of Derby, and eight further education colleges in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. He worked for three years as a part‐time consultant Sensitivity: Internal on distance learning for the Vice‐Chancellor of the University of Leicester. [Updated 2016] Mr Russ Langley Russ Langley is currently Director of Marketing & Communications at the University of Derby, having originally joined the institution in May 2012 as Head of Corporate Relations. During this time he has overseen a major overhaul of Marketing & Communications structure and operations in order to maximise the effectiveness of student recruitment activity. The majority of his career prior to that has been spent in sports communications, firstly working his way up to Head of Communications at UK Sport – the government agency responsible for delivering Olympic and Paralympic success. He then became Head of Communications at British Cycling overseeing all communications activities at a time of huge growth in interest, participation and membership in the sport in the run‐up to London 2012. Mr Derek Latham Derek Latham is an architect, town planner and landscape architect, with specialist qualifications in conservation and urbanism. He has led his practice, Lathams in Derby for 34 years. His book Creative Reuse of Buildings is used by conservation courses throughout the country. He founded the East Midlands Architecture Centre, ‘Opun’, advises the English Heritage Urban Panel, is Technical Adviser to the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust and is Chair of the Derwent Valley Trust responsible for the DV Heritage Trail and promoting a new off road cycleway from Derby to Matlock. He is an honorary graduate and visiting professor to the University and is collaborating with the University on the development of a new eco‐friendly house. [Updated 2017] Mrs Pauline Latham, OBE MP Pauline has been the Member of Parliament for Mid‐Derbyshire since 2010 and has been involved in local politics in the area since 1987. For many years, Pauline was a local Councillor, representing Oakwood on Derby City Council, Derbyshire County Council and later became the Mayor of the City of Derby. Pauline has a keen interest in education and was a school governor for 12 years. She has also championed a number of health causes including a Meningitis vaccination programme and life‐improving drugs for melanoma patients. Pauline sits on the International Development Select Committee and has a particular interest in women’s issues. She was appointed as PPS to a Minister in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 2014. [2015] Mr Bob Laxton HonDUniv Bob Laxton was born at was Derby City Hospital, now the Derby Hospital, in September 1944 and has lived in Derby all of his life. He was educated at Quarndon C of E School, Allestree Woodlands Secondary School and the Joseph Wright College of Art and Technology on Green Lane. On leaving Joseph Wright he first delivered milk for the Derby Co‐Operative Dairy then commenced an apprenticeship with the General Post Office, now BT plc, as a Telecommunications Engineer, where he remained in employment for the next thirty six years. In the early seventies Bob became an elected Trade Union Officer with the then Post Office Engineering Union, now the Communications Union, eventually becoming a regional negotiator for the CWU covering the East and West Midlands, Wales and the South West Region of England. In 1979 Bob, who had by then, already been an active member of the Labour Party for many years, was elected onto Derby City Council representing Normanton Ward and was elected as Secretary to the controlling Labour Group on the Council. In 1986 he was elected by the Labour Group to become its Leader, a position he was to hold for the next eleven years and at the same time he became Leader of the Council again in 1986 through to 1988 and 1994 to 1997. During his nineteen years on the Council Bob oversaw the development of Pride Park, was instrumental in the moving of Derby County Football Club from its old site at the Baseball ground to its present location on Pride Park. He was the key player in the establishment of the East Midlands Local Government Association created by the amalgamation of the sometimes warring factions of the five County Associations of District Councils and the five Sensitivity: Internal members of the Association of County Councils and out of this new East Midlands LGA the creation of the East Midlands Regional Assembly. In 1996 alongside the late and much missed Sir Martin Doughty Bob helped ensure that Derby City became an all‐ purpose Unitary Authority jointly creating with Martin a model for the disaggregation of multi million pound budgets between Local Authorities a model copied by Local Governments through England. In 1997 Bob was elected as the Member of Parliament for Derby North and in his first four year parliament he served as a member of the Trade & Industry Select Committee. In his second four year parliament Bob served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt. Hon. Alan Johnson MP in the Department of Trade & Industry where Alan was Industry Minister, in the Department of Education & Skills where Allan was Higher Education Minister, in the Department of Work & pensions where Allan was Secretary of State and joined the Cabinet and once again in the Department of Trade & Industry where Allan was Secretary of State. In his third five year parliamentary term Bob ceased working for Allan Johnson and became a UK parliamentary representative on the Council of Europe, based in Strasbourg and on the Defence & Security parliamentary Assembly based in Paris. In May 2010 Bob retired as an MP after well over thirty years as an elected representative for the people of our City. In January 2011 Bob received The Degree of Honorary Doctor of the University of Derby for his work on behalf of the City and its University. Bob remains an active walker and cyclist and continues with his lifelong interest in canals, narrow boats, international relations and politics. [Updated 2017] Mr Tom Levitt BA HonDUniv Tom Levitt represented High Peak as a Labour MP from 1997 – 2010. In that capacity he was influential in securing the Buxton Campus for the University of Derby. Tom was an authority in Parliament on charities and volunteering. Since 2010 he has established himself as a consultant and writer on ‘using the tools of business to create public good'. He is the author of 'Welcome to GoodCo' (2014) and 'Partners for Good' (2012). His positions held include member, sustainable advisory panel for Walgreen Boots Alliance; trustee, the Work Foundation; non‐executive director of Outreach Solutions and Chair of the trustee board of Fair For You, a charity which he helped found, which operates a social enterprise of the same name to provide ethical, responsible loans for household goods for people who cannot access mainstream financial services. [Updated 2016] Mr Andrew Lewer MBE MEP Andrew is a Member of the European Parliament for the East Midlands and leads in Brussels for the European Conservatives and Reformists Group on the Culture and Education Committee and the Regional Development Committee. He grew up in and around Ashbourne, Derbyshire, and studied History at the University of Newcastle‐ upon‐Tyne and then Downing College, Cambridge. Upon returning to Derbyshire he worked in publishing. He was the youngest County Council Leader in the country as Leader of Derbyshire County Council from 2009‐13 and served as Deputy Chairman of the Local Government Association from 2011‐14. In his time in local government Andrew was Chairman of the UNESCO World Heritage Site The Derwent Valley Mills, founding Chairman of the Derbyshire Health and Wellbeing Board and a founding Director of the Local Enterprise Partnership for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, D2N2. In addition to his duties as a MEP, Andrew is a Director of the Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust and a Vice‐President of the Local Government Association. In the 2014 New Year Honours List he was awarded an MBE for services to local government. Mr James Lewis James studied a degree in fine art and auctioneering at Southampton before commencing his career briefly in London before joining leading provincial firm Neales of Nottingham in 1993. He is the founder of Bamfords Auctioners and Valuers and senior director of Richardson and Linnell and Neales. As an auctioneer James has a reputation for amusing the crowds whilst achieving great results; in doing so won UK top auctioneer 2 years in a row, holds the world record for the longest ever solo auction (26 hours) and as such is in high demand and travels all over the world for auctions. He works directly for the Finance Director (HP) and carries responsibility for Financial staff, systems, processing, controls, budgets, reporting and results, and has latterly added Procurement into his portfolio. Rob has graduated from the University of Nottingham as well as Nottingham Trent University and the University of Derby, the latter where he gained his CIMA qualification. After 23 years working in a variety of positions within the private sector, Rob returned to the University becoming FC in 2005. His main research interest is in plant conservation biotechnology, particularly the use of cryopreservation and is a member of the University’s Environmental Sustainability Research Centre. He is Head of the Department of Natural Sciences within the College of Life and Natural Sciences and chairs the University Professoriate. He is also a trustee of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and the Treasurer of the Heads of Bioscience, a special interest group of the Royal Society of Biology. [Updated 2017] Emeritus Professor David Manley Following a sixteen year career in Arts Administration culminating as Deputy Director of East Midlands Arts Council David established an arts consultancy, working for various national, regional and independent agencies and was visiting lecturer at over thirty UK art schools. He joined the University as Deputy Dean of the School of Art & Design in 1994, became Dean of School in 1995 & Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Design & Technology in 2000. He retired in 2008 and now devotes his time to his first love, painting, exhibiting regularly, and a spot of lecturing and exhibition curation. [Updated 2017]. Mrs Anne Martin Anne was appointed as Headteacher at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (QEGS), Ashbourne, Derbyshire, in September 2012. Having achieved Outstanding for Leadership & Management in an Ofsted inspection in November 2014, Anne became a National Leader of Education in 2015 and continues to work in partnership with several schools and academies, as well as the Derby Diocesan Board of Education. In early 2016, Anne became the Executive Headteacher of the QEGS Multi Academy Trust – something of which she is very proud. School to School Support is now a significant part of her role – supporting other Headteachers in the locality. Anne also works as a strategic partner in two Teaching School Alliances, involving primary and secondary schools, and believes in working in true collaboration. She regularly presents at local and regional events and always put students and young people at the heart of everything she does. QEGS has been working with the University of Derby for a number of years and benefits from its support and transition work with our sixth form students, including visits and workshops. He is the Business Development Trustee of the charity Friends of the Baby Unit (which has raised over £2 million for the neo‐natal unit at the Royal Derby Hospital since 1976). Matthew is a governor at Becket Primary School in Derby, a volunteer at the Padley Hostel in Derby and he is involved in local and national politics. His interests include: politics and current affairs, travel, gardening, football (he is a Derby County season ticket holder), and motor racing. He is also a chorister. [Updated 2017] Mr Frank McArdle Chief Executive, South Derbyshire District Council Mr Roy McFarland Hon MUniv Roy McFarland has devoted over 40 years to English Football as a player and manager. Roy McFarland was born in Liverpool in 1948, his family moved to Derby in the early 1960s. Football was his passion and he signed as a professional footballer with Fourth Division Tranmere Rovers in 1966. Roy experienced immediate success as his team was promoted to the Third Division. The following season, he transferred to Derby County which was then in the Second Division and managed by Brian Clough. Roy played in the position of central defender. Two years, in 1969, later Derby County won promotion to the First Division. The Rams now entered their most illustrious period, qualifying for the European Cup competition in 1971, winning the League Championship in 1972 and 1975 and reaching the semi‐finals of the European Cup in 1973 and the quarter‐finals in 1976. In a playing career of fourteen years between 1967 and 1981, Roy made 300 home appearances and played in over 500 league cup games for Derby County Football Club. Roy also had a sustained international playing career. He played five times for the Under‐23 team and he gained 28 Full England Caps playing gracing soccer grounds around the world. The Rt Rev’d The Bishop of Repton Jan McFarlane Jan McFarlane is the Assistant Bishop in Derbyshire, and the ninth female bishop in the history of the Church of England. A former speech and language therapist in the NHS, Jan trained for ordained ministry in Durham and has served for 24 years in Stafford, Ely and Norwich. She has a life‐long interest in communications and writes for Church House Publishing. [2016] Professor Aradhana Mehra Aradhana Mehra is Professor of Environmental Geochemistry and Health. She has specialist expertise in the biogeochemistry of toxic elements in the water‐soil‐plant‐human pathway and has conducted extensive research into the concentration of trace elements in tea and their adsorption by the human body. [Updated 2017] Ms Roohi Mehra MPharm PGDip PGCertEd FHEA MRPharmS Roohi was appointed an Independent Member of Governing Council in October 2015. She is the Officer Commanding (OC) the Department of Pharmacy and Medical Supply (DPMS) in the Ministry of Defence (MoD). In this role she oversees the delivery of pharmacy training and education across the MoD. Previously she worked at the University of Birmingham as an eLearning Manager and Teaching Associate for an NHS England project improving continuing professional development for prescribers. Whilst working as a Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy Practice at the University of Hertfordshire, she completed her Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). She led modules in inter‐ professional education, held the School role of Fitness to Practise Officer, and also held the Departmental roles of Placements Lead and Graduate Attributes Champion. After rotating through many clinical specialties in the NHS, Roohi specialised in Acute Care, Admissions and Accident & Emergency. Roohi’s professional body, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, holds an annual awards ceremony to honour those pharmacists who have contributed greatly to their field; Roohi was fortunate enough to be shortlisted for, and subsequently become the winner of the Award for Excellence in Education in 2015. In her spare time, Roohi volunteers as a STEM Ambassador for the STEMNET charity, which aims to encourage young people to enter Sensitivity: Internal careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. She visits schools to encourage children to pursue careers in these fields, and is particularly keen to inspire under‐represented girls to enter these subject areas. Roohi is a huge animal lover and has volunteered at local animal charities for many years. He is Chairman of Derby West India Community Association; one of the founder members and Chairman of East Midlands Caribbean Carnival Arts Network (EMCCAN); and Vice Chairman of Derby Racial Equality Council. Former Chairman of Derby Millennium Network and VCS representative on Derby City Partnership Board. [Updated 2017] Professor Kathryn Mitchell, Vice‐Chancellor Professor Mitchell is Vice‐Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Derby. Prior to joining the University in September 2015 she was Deputy Vice‐Chancellor of the University of West London with special responsibility for academic provision and quality across the University. She has also held senior positions of Pro Vice‐Chancellor Academic and Student Support Services and Dean of Students at West London. Professor Mitchell was a Wellcome Fellow at the Institute of Psychiatry, London and has studied at the Universities of York and London. She has worked at the University of Chicago, the Rockefeller Institute, New York and the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel. Kath is a chartered Psychologist and played an active role within the Institute for Practice and Interdisciplinary Research (INSPIRE), supervising and directing a range of research programmes. She is married with two children. [2015] Mr Mel Morris, HonDUniv Mel Morris has 40 years' experience in the software industry, and has played a leading role in six highly successful businesses collectively worth more than £4 billion. Local successes include: Prevx, pioneers of cloud‐based internet security solutions; uDate, the world’s second largest matchmaking business; Minitech, pioneers of intelligent disk array technology and performance enhancement solutions; and the Mickleover Court Hotel. Mel also has investments in other local businesses, including BriefYourMarket and Serious Sports Technology Ltd. He is probably best known for his 12 years as Non‐ Executive Chairman and financier of King Digital Entertainment Plc, the firm behind the global Candy Crush phenomenon. Mel is a renowned philanthropist: he is the founder of MSTART Medical, Sports and Research Technology Trust and a Platinum Patron of the Prince’s Trust. Other philanthropic projects include the Royal Derby Hospital Robotic Surgeon initiative and dialysis research. In June 2015 he became chairman of Derby County Football Club; later the same year, Derby‐born Mel realised a life‐long dream by becoming owner of the Rams. The University awarded him an honorary doctorate in July 2016 in recognition of his significant contribution to business, sport, charities and young entrepreneurship in Derby and beyond. [2017] Mr Simon Morritt Simon became Chief Executive at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in September 2016 bringing with him many years’ experience of the NHS. He joined the NHS in September 1989 as a general management trainee in Greater Manchester. He has held posts in Manchester, Wakefield and Doncaster, where he joined the Health Authority in 1998. Simon became Chief Sensitivity: Internal Executive of Doncaster Central Primary Care Trust in October 2000 and in October 2004 became Director of Performance at West Yorkshire Strategic Health Authority. In October 2006 he was appointed Chief Executive of Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust (now NHS Bradford and Airedale). In 2011 he was appointed Chief Executive of Sheffield Children’s Hospital. He has a degree in politics from Leicester University and an MBA from Liverpool John Moores University. [2017] Sir Stephen Moss Kt HonDUniv Stephen Moss is a nurse who has devoted his career to healthcare. He held senior NHS positions in nursing and general management, including Director of Nursing at the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. The Secretary of State appointed him a Commissioner on the original NHS quality regulator where he helped to develop the first reviews of clinical quality across England and Wales. For five years he was Chairman of the Nurse Directors Association, and provided advice on nursing and health policy to the Secretary of State. Sir Stephen was asked to undertake the role of Chairman at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust following the Healthcare Commission's highly critical report. Those events were a defining moment for health and social care in the United Kingdom and a most challenging time in NHS history. He currently holds Non‐Executive Director posts at Derby Teaching Hospitals and Health Education England, where he chaired the Steering Group for a pre‐degree work experience pilot. The scheme, recommended in the Francis Report, provides prospective nursing students with ‘a year to care’. The University awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate in 2016 in recognition of Sir Stephen's services to health and social care as an outstanding nurse leader and role model. [2017] The Rt Hon Sir John Mummery, DL HonDUniv Lord Justice Mummery, DL enjoyed a distinguished judicial career of hearing cases in the High Court, Court of Appeal, Employment Appeal Tribunal and Court of Ecclesiastical Cases Reserved. He was born into an East Kent sheep and dairy farming family near Dover and between 1949 and 1957 attended Dover County Grammar School for Boys, where he won an Exhibition in Modern History to Pembroke College Oxford. He read law there, graduating in 1963 with degrees of BA and Bachelor of Civil Law. Pembroke elected him an Honorary Fellow of the College in 1989. He was called to the Bar in 1964 after joining the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn. During his career Sir John rose to the upper echelons of the judiciary, ultimately being appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1996 until his retirement from that full‐time position in September 2013. Sir John has contributed his time and seniority of experience to the University of Derby including opening our new Law Court and delivering a fascinating talk entitled “Judicial All‐Sorts” which spanned his career at the Bench. He became an Honorary Doctor of the University at the Awards Ceremonies in January 2016. [Updated 2017] Mr Stephen Munn Stephen Munn is CEO & Artistic Director of Déda joining in September 2006; Déda is a Creative Centre for Dance, Contemporary Circus and Outdoor Performance connecting locally, nationally and internationally. Before arriving in Derby he was Director of Quay Arts on the Isle of Wight; a visual arts venue housing four galleries, artist studios and a performance space. Previously he was Head of Theatre Programme at Trinity Laban, Music & Dance Conservatoire based in South East London, and was part of the original client team responsible for the delivery of the new Laban Creekside building which opened in February 2003. The building was the recipient of the 2003 Sterling Prize for Architecture, building of the year. Stephen has an MA in Arts Management & Strategy from London City University and is currently a Trustee of Derby Book Festival and Wired Aerial Theatre. He is the co‐ founder and Artistic Lead of Derby Festé one of the UK’s leading international street arts festivals which takes place in the City Centre every September. He joined us in October 2016, from the Accord Group – which provides social housing and care services – where he was Group Director of HR and Organisational Development. Previously he has worked at Serco Health and the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Trust. Mark brings with him many years of experience, a passion for customer service and employee engagement, and strong change management skills. [2016] Mr Guthrie Pickering Guthrie is now retired following a 40 year career in the manufacturing industry. During that time he had been involved in establishing training schemes designed for companies to explore new technologies using current employees. He began his career in Derby as a graduate recruit and gained experience to build up and run a successful business in the Wet Midlands before buying his own company. He grew a profitable manufacturing operation in Nottingham over an 18 year period that was handed over to new investors using the management team that he had helped to develop. [Updated 2017] Mrs Pollyanna Pickering NDD HonMUniv Pollyanna Pickering is recognised as one of Europe’s foremost wildlife artists and most published artist in the UK. She is Patron of The Wildlife Art Society International. Pollyanna is renowned for her expeditions to study and paint endangered species in their natural habitats. She studied at the London Central School of Art, and has won over 30 international awards recognizing her achievements in art and conservation and the University of Derby awarded her an honorary degree. The Pollyanna Pickering Foundation raises funds for worldwide conservation, animal welfare and disaster relief. Pollyanna also acts as patron of many national and international organisations including The Born Free Foundation, The Badger Trust, and Raptor Rescue. [Updated 2017] Ms Louise Pigden BSc MPhil SFHEA Louise is the Academic Board representative on the Governing Council. Louise is currently seconded to the College of Engineering and Technology where she is interim Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering and Built Environment and also Head of Learning, Teaching and Student Experience for the college overall. Louise studied Physics as an undergraduate at the University of Warwick, and as a postgraduate at the University of Leeds. She has held varied senior academic leadership and management roles that have provided a broad insight into higher education from differing perspectives. She was Principal Lecturer managing the Leeds Beckett University’s network of further education colleges; Head of Division of Digital Media and Entertainment Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University, having departmental responsibility for third stream income generation, enterprise and student employability; Assistant Registrar ‐ Assessment, Awards and Regulations at Sheffield Hallam University, having wide‐ranging responsibilities that directly impacted on the student experience. At Derby she was Head of Joint Honours, a role that affords unique insight into the academic student experience across all colleges of the University. Louise’s research interests have spanned computational physics with a focus on hyperbranched polymers, through to the pedagogy of web programming, and more recently the experience and employability of joint honours students. During 2017 Louise has undertaken a secondment as Interim Head of Mechanical Engineering and Built Environment. [Updated 2017] Professor Philip Plowden, Deputy Vice‐Chancellor Professor Philip Plowden joined the University’s Executive team in 2011. In his role as the Deputy Vice‐Chancellor he has responsibility for overseeing the University’s academic portfolio, and working closely with all of the colleges to support their success. Philip has numerous other cross‐university responsibilities, including the chairing of the Academic Development and Quality Committee of Academic Board, and of the University’s Conferments Committee. Philip also has the lead for taking forward the University’s Environmental Sustainability agenda. Philip’s first degree is in English, but by training he is a solicitor and barrister, specialising in criminal law and in human rights. Philip was made a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2005 in recognition of his Sensitivity: Internal work on clinical legal education. He is a non‐executive director of the Office for Legal Complaints (the Legal Ombudsman Service), a member of the Law Society of England and Wales’ Education and Training Committee, and a founding Trustee of the Derby Museums and Art Gallery. [Updated 2017] Mr Geoffrey Pook Geoffrey Pook was employed as a Solicitor in Local Authorities for 33 years, including 23 years in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. He was Chief Executive of Erewash Borough Council from 1995 until 2000. Mrs Louise Potter DL FRSA HonMUniv FIH Louise Potter ran The Old Hall Hotel, Buxton for 25years. She did her General Catering Diploma at High Peak College, Buxton and worked with Grand Metropolitan Hotels in London. She was a Governor at High Peak College when it merged with the University of Derby. In 2001 she opened 6 The Square Tearooms Buxton. Currently she is on the board of The High Peak Theatre Trust, Board Member of The Buxton International Festival and Chairman of The Children’s Kinder Choir’s Trust. Her interests include art, opera, archaeology, gardening and travel. [Updated 2017] Emeritus Professor Jonathan Powers DL HonDUniv Jonathan Powers was one of the first Professors appointed at Derby and the first Pro Vice‐Chancellor (Academic) of the University. He is also an Honorary Professor of Middlesex University and an Honorary Fellow of Sussex University. Following retirement he Chaired Derby Playhouse, Derby Multi‐Faith Centre and Derby Chamber Music Society. He also organised the Flamsteed Lectures and the Erasmus Darwin Festival. He has recently retired again to devote his time to writing and occasional lecturing. He is currently completing a series of original mini‐ monographs focusing on Enlightenment figures with connections to Derby, including Thomas Hobbes, John Flamsteed, Henry Cavendish, Benjamin Franklin, John Whitehurst, Erasmus Darwin and Herbert Spencer, as well as three studies of specific ‘scientific paintings’ by Joseph Wright. These are published under the imprint Quandary Books with the profits going to support Derby Museum and Art Gallery and Erasmus Darwin House in Lichfield. [Updated 2017] Mrs Carol Prowse Carol Prowse is Chairman of the High Peak Theatre Trust (Buxton Opera House) and has supported the magnificent Matcham Theatre for over 30 years. She was born and educated in the High Peak before gaining a degree in economics from London University. Carol is closely associated with the Kinder Choirs of the High Peak one of the UK’s foremost choral organisations. She was, until 2016, Deputy Chairman and Senior Independent Director at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and is now on the Board of the Tameside and Glossop Clinical Commissioning Group. Prior to those appointments she was a Non‐Executive Director on the board of the High Peak and Dales PCT. Carol has a great love of the performing arts, especially opera, classical music and drama. Another passion is the High Peak with its glorious landscape and rural life. [Updated 2017] Mr Andrew Pugh MBE DL Hon D Univ Andrew Pugh is managing director of Derbyshire's oldest tourist attraction, the Heights of Abraham. He has been responsible for leading the restoration and development of this estate since 1974, He introduced its landmark Cable Car system in 1984 ‐ the first of its kind in the British Isles. Andrew is actively involved in international project management assignments, advising, building and operating cable car systems in China, Jordan, and South Africa. He co‐ordinated the Anglo/French consortium that built the passenger capsules and the control technology for the London Eye and is currently involved with the same team building the i360 Tower on the West Pier in Brighton. Andrew is Chairman of Visit Peak District & Derbyshire Tourist Board. [Updated 2017] Mr Hari Punchihewa, Deputy Chief Executive and Finance Director Hari Punchihewa is a member of the University Executive team. He is responsible for all resources including the full Estate, IT Services, Human Resources, Procurement and Corporate Finances. In addition he leads commercial, legal Sensitivity: Internal and business development activities and the Corporate Planning Process of the University. His key task is to make sure we are financially robust and the University is sustainable in the long term. Hari was the first Director in the University sector to be admitted as a Chartered Director by the Institute of Directors in the UK. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. In his previous working life he was in the private sector, blue‐chip companies mainly in the merchant banking and financial services sector. As a senior executive his experience ranges from corporate finance and business operations to acquisition and mergers, new company set‐ups and leading company restructures in both the UK and Europe. Prior to joining Derby, Hari worked for Daimler Benz Group as Finance Director/Company Secretary responsible for a number of subsidiaries. Outside work he is a keen supporter of Northampton Saints Rugby and the county cricket team. He was appointed as a Magistrate and a Justice of Peace by Her Majesty’s Court Service in 2006. [Updated 2017] Councillor Martin Rawson Martin Rawson has been serving the residents of Derby for over a decade having been elected as a councillor for the Derwent ward in July 2005. He has operated in a number of positions on council committees, including as a scrutiny chair and licensing committee member, before joining the Council Cabinet in 2012, as portfolio holder for Children and Young People. When he became Deputy Leader of Derby City Council in 2014, Martin took on a different portfolio, which includes planning matters and regeneration. With a professional background in health, Martin worked for the former Derby North MP Chris Williamson, giving him a wide range of experience across many public service areas. [Updated 2015] The Rt Revd Dr Alastair Redfern The Rt. Revd. Dr. Alastair Redfern has been Bishop of Derby since 2005, and was previously Suffragan Bishop of Grantham. He has expertise in the fields of theology, church history, social justice, clergy training, leadership and spirituality. He is an accomplished speaker, lecturer and teacher, and an author of books and papers on a variety of Christian themes. His publications include Mission in Action, Discipleship, The Leadership of the People of God, Out of the Depths, Community and Conflict ‐ A Christian Contribution, and Public Space and Private Faith. Bishop Alastair is a trustee of Christian Aid and a member of the House of Lords. Mrs Brenda Remington BA Dip FE PGCE FRSA Brenda Remington is a former Chair of Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Prior to holding this position, she served for a number of years as a non‐executive director of the DRI and Southern Derbyshire Hospitals Trusts. She was the first Chair of the Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from 2004‐2009. She had a career in teaching and management in secondary and further education and her last post was Principal of South East Derbyshire College. Following retirement she was actively involved in the community serving as a school governor, a member of Amber Valley Borough Council and a trustee of Amber Valley Community Transport. She was also a non‐executive director of the Derbyshire Building Society. She recently served on the Quinquennial Review Group which evaluated the performance and effectiveness of the Governing Council. [Updated 2017] Mr Peter Richardson FCIB MBA Peter was formerly Director and Chief Executive of The Derbyshire Building Society. He has spent his working life in building societies. He joined The Derbyshire in January 1997 as Operations Director, after holding several executive appointments with Nationwide. Then, two years later he was appointed Chief Executive a position which he held until he took retirement in 2008. In addition to his Masters Degree in Business Administration he has also attended Harvard Business School in the USA. Peter is Chairman of Derby Cityscape and Chair of Derbyshire 2012 Games Management Group. Peter is married to Avril and has two daughters ‐ Clare – working at The Derbyshire and Jane who runs a fashion outlet. Peter is a member of Kedleston Park Golf Club and an active keep‐fit jogger, marathon runner and cyclist. Mr Anton Rippon HonMUniv Anton Rippon was born in Derby in 1944 and grew up here. A former reporter and feature writer with the Derby Sensitivity: Internal Telegraph, in 1982 he founded Breedon Books; over the next 20 years he developed the Derby‐based company into one of Britain’s most successful book publishers, specialising in sport and history. He sold Breedon in 2003 to become a freelance writer and journalist. His work has appeared in The Times, Independent, Guardian and Sunday Telegraph as well several national magazines. He wrote documentary series for BBC Radio Derby, and for the last 15 years has written a popular weekly column in the Derby Telegraph. The author of 30 books on sport and wartime history, he is a member of the Sports Journalists’ Association of Great Britain, the Football Writers’ Association, and the International Society of Olympic Historians. In 1993 the Derby County Former Players Association made him an honorary member, and in 2015 gave him its annual merit award. He was awarded an Honorary Masters of the University in July 2016. [Updated 2017] Mr John Rivers CBE DL Mr Rivers’ career was in general management in the engineering industry primarily as an HR professional. His last role was HR Director for Rolls‐Royce plc. He is a sometime Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development and was a lay member of the Employment Appeals Tribunal from April 1996 to March 2016. Currently he is Chair of the Derby Hospitals Foundation Trust (FT) and also Chair of the Burton Hospitals FT. He has served as Chair of the Arkwright Society at Cromford Mills and ViVA Sinfonia, Derby. [Updated 2017] Mr Martin Rogers BSc FCA Martin Rogers is a chartered accountant and is currently Local Senior Partner of Mazars LLP, the accounting and business advisory firm. He is also a non‐executive director of a number of other businesses. Prior to this he was group finance director of Ascot plc, a £350m turnover chemicals and pharmaceutical group and the senior partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Derby. Martin served on the University’s Governing Council for 11 years and was Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee from 2007 until July 2016. [Updated 2017] Michael Gerald Ruhrmund BEd(Hons) MEd Michael Ruhrmund was born and educated in Penzance, Cornwall. He attended St Paul’s College, Cheltenham 1968‐72. He started teaching in 1972 and completed a MEd degree at Birmingham University. He taught in Perryfields, Sandwell MBC; Sir Gilbert Claughton, Dudley MBC; Monks Dyke, Lincolnshire LA and he was Headteacher of Friesland School, Derbyshire LA from 1995 until 2009. His interests include history, all sports, current affairs and his family. [Updated 2017] Dr David Russell Dr Russell was the founding Dean of College of Business, commencing his position with the University in September 2015. In January 2017 he commenced the expanded role of Dean of the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences. David has over 25 years’ experience in higher education and has worked extensively across the sector. He is engaged in higher education strategic leadership and management, lecturing and research. His research interests are taxation, sustainability, corporate social responsibility and carbon emissions. David has contributed widely to academic discourse in this area and has published books and academic journal articles. David is also a Non‐ Executive Director of emh group. [Updated 2017] Mrs Sushma Sehmbi Sushma Sehmbi was Headteacher of Hardwick Primary School. She has now retired and is putting her teaching skills to further use. Sushma has started her own small business, teaching how to cook the best of authentic vegetarian Indian Cuisine, using fresh ingredients and spices from her own kitchen. [Updated 2016] Sensitivity: Internal Mrs Cathryn Selby Cathryn studied for her LLB Degree in Law at the University of Manchester between 1989 and 1992 and, in 1993 completed the Law Society Final Examinations at Chester College of Law. She trained with Halliwell Landau in Manchester, qualifying in 1995, and later went on to head Irwin Mitchell’s national professional negligence team and its commercial litigation team in Sheffield before joining Nelsons as a Partner in the dispute resolution team in 2012. Cathryn advises on a wide range of high value and complex commercial disputes and is a member of the Professional Negligence Lawyers Association. Outside of work, Cathryn enjoys travel, reading and hill walking. [2016] Dr Lynn Senior Lynn Senior is Dean, Institute of Education at the University of Derby. Her background is as a vocational teacher in Leisure, Tourism and Business in secondary schools and in the FE and Skills sector. She has extensive experience of ITT, initially working as a secondary vocational specialist and then as a 14‐19 vocational specialist across both secondary and FE sectors. She is the author of Teaching 14‐19 Diplomas published in 2010 and A Teacher’s Guide to Policy and Practice, published in 2016, and has also contributed to several chapters in other texts. In addition, she also led the development of the Special Educational Needs Centre, which focuses on both training and research within the field of Special Educational Needs. Her current role involves the management of a team of 80 staff, working across both ITT, undergraduate and post graduate educational based programmes. [Updated 2017] Mrs Shirley Shaw MBE Shirley Shaw is Chairman of the Derbyshire Help the Aged Committee, the County President of the Derbyshire St John’s Ambulance and also a Trustee of the Community Save a Life Scheme. She served for 9 years on a community NHS Health Care Trust as a non‐executive director and still does work in the mental health area. She was appointed MBE in 2000 for services to consumer affairs which included being a state appointed member to the Gas Industry. She was also appointed to the NE Rail User’s Consultative Council and helped to save the Settle – Carlisle Railway Line from being axed. [Updated 2017] Professor David Sheffield Professor David Sheffield is Associate Head of the Centre for Psychological Research at the University of Derby and a Health Psychologist. He has a particular interest in training students at postgraduate level. His research is focused on three areas: psychosocial aspects of heart disease, pain and psychophysiological responses to stress. Mr Kultaran Singh Kultaran Singh is a Local Chartered Accountant and is the Managing Partner in a public practice. He was previously on the Board of Derby Pride Ltd, the city challenge company set up from 1993‐1998 to develop Pride Park. He has served on the Boards of Derbyshire Community Foundation and the Royal School for the Deaf. Mr Colin Smith CBE HonDUniv Colin Smith joined Rolls‐Royce in 1974 as an undergraduate apprentice. He has held a variety of key positions within the Company, including Director – Research and Technology and Director of Engineering and Technology – Civil Aerospace before joining the board as Director of Engineering and Technology. In 2016 he became Group President. Colin is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a member of the USA National Academy of Engineering. He is a Member of the Prime Ministers Council for Science and Technology. In June 2012 he was awarded a CBE for services to UK engineering. [Updated 2017] Mr Stephen Smith BA FIOD Stephen Smith is an Independent Member of Governing Council and Chair of the Strategy, Finance and Planning Committee. Stephen is Chief Executive and founder of EMB Group, a leading economic development, business services and accreditation company which since 2006 has delivered a variety of high value programmes worth over Sensitivity: Internal £200m for both the public and private sectors. His earlier career was in brand marketing with multinational corporations followed by general management roles in the greeting cards and logistics sectors, the latter as Managing Director of a high growth £134m pharmaceutical distribution business. Stephen also has significant experience as a non‐executive director on a number of different bodies, including RNN Group FE College, North Northants Development Company, British Chambers of Commerce, Princes Trust Regional Council and the NEST Employers Panel for pension auto‐enrolment. Smith Steven originates from the City of York having been educated at Archbishop Holgate’s Grammar School and joined National Westminster Bank there in 1979. For over 30 years he has worked within the East Midlands around Nottingham, Derby and latterly Chesterfield. As a Bank Manager he has worked with many owner‐managed businesses, ranging from small start‐ups to £50M turnover companies. He has a wide experience of supporting businesses across a range of sectors including agriculture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, healthcare, landed estates and real estate. In 2012 he joined the board of Destination Chesterfield to help promote the town and the surrounding area. [2015] Mr Ian Stephenson Ian is Chief Executive of Derbyshire County Council. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer and has worked in local government for over 40 years. He was previously the Corporate Director Neighbourhood Services at City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council for four years, moving from Doncaster Metropolitan District Council where he was Executive Director of Neighbourhood Services. Prior to that he was Director of Direct Services for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and spent 18 years working for the Metropolitan District Councils in Manchester. He joined Derbyshire County Council in 2007 as Strategic Director of Environmental Services and was appointed as Chief Executive in July 2013. Derbyshire County Council is an ‘upper tier’ Council with responsibility for Children’s Services, Adult Social Care, Highways, Planning, Waste, Countryside, Public Health and Community Services. Derbyshire is leading the country in the development of Combined Authorities in two tier local government areas. [Updated 2015] Mrs Julie Stone Director of University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL). Ms Mandie Stravino Mandie is currently the Chief Executive of the Derby College Group. Mandie’s passion for education and a desire to enable others to achieve their aspirations brought her into education in 1995 as a lecturer in a large East Midlands college. Since her appointment as Chief Executive in September 2012, Mandie has refocused the Derby College Group to enable it to effectively respond to the needs of the many different types of learners. In March 2016 a full further education and skills inspection was carried out by Ofsted, which found the College to be Good with Outstanding features. Key findings included the identification of strong leadership which had rapidly improved provision and outcomes, outstanding partnership work with employers, outstanding provision for learners with high needs, and Ofsted acknowledged the College was a valued resource for the City and County; which provides an inclusive and welcoming environment and high quality facilities for teaching and learning. QAA’s review of Derby College’s HE programmes (May 2015) commended the College for the quality and enhancement of student learning opportunities, and confirmed the quality of information about learning opportunities met expectations, as did the maintenance of academic standards of awards. Mandie has overseen the formation of the Derby College Education Trust, a multi‐academy trust, which currently Sensitivity: Internal sponsors an 11‐18 academy in Derby City. Mandie also represents the Group as one of three partners sponsoring the Derby Manufacturing University Technical College. Mandie actively engages in, and contributes towards, the region’s economic growth strategies. [Updated 2017] Miss Grace Suszek, BA (Hons) Grace Suszek was elected President of the University of Derby’s Students’ Union in the academic year 2015/16. As President UDSU she is also becomes a member of the University’s Governing Council on 1 July 2016. Grace achieved a First Class Honours in Creative Writing and has aspirations to go into local politics in the future. [2016] Mr Dan Swaine Dan Swaine is the Joint Chief Executive Officer of North East Derbyshire District Council and Bolsover District Council. He started work with the authorities in October 2015, but his local government experience spans over 25 years. Dan previously worked as Deputy Chief Executive at Rushcliffe Borough Council, where he was instrumental in levering significant funding to support economic development for the A46 corridor and the Cotgrave former colliery site changes. He also oversaw a council strategy that helped save over £4m and was part of the top team that won the 2015 MJ Senior Management Team of the Year award. [2016] Mr Peter Swallow Peter has been Managing Director of Bolsterstone Plc since September 1987. For almost 30 years, Peter has been involved in the development of commercial property projects from inception to completion. This has involved working on a variety of projects including offices, nursing homes, industrial properties and retail premises with values ranging from £1M to £20M. More recently the Company has been leading major Public sector/Private sector partnership mixed use regeneration schemes with Chesterfield, Bradford and Sheffield Councils. He is married with four children; Peter is Chairman of the Destination Chesterfield Business Group, and a private sector board member for the Derbyshire Economic Partnership. [Updated 2017] Emeritus Professor Freda Tallantyre Freda Tallantyre was formerly Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Derby. After retirement in 2006, she became a part‐time Senior Associate for the Higher Education Academy being the strategic lead for their national team for Employer Engagement and Workforce Development. Freda is now fully retired. [Updated 2017] Mr Stephen Taylor BMus FCA Stephen became an Independent Member of Governing Council in October 2015. He has a 30 year career helping companies across Europe and beyond, first with PwC and later with AlixPartners. He led the Continental European restructuring practice of the former and was a senior Managing Director at the second. He now runs his own advisory firm Best known for his work on complex western European restructurings, Stephen’s roles have encompassed board roles on several high profile cases. He was chairman of the restructuring committee at SAAB Automobile in Sweden, Chief Restructuring Officer of Vion Food Group in the Netherlands and Chairman of Southern Cross Healthcare in UK. Stephen is also an advisor to various governments and has been a guest lecturer at several European Universities. Educated in Derbyshire and living in the county for many years, Stephen is a Chartered Accountant and also holds a degree in Music. [Updated 2016] Sensitivity: Internal Mr Len Tildsley BSc (Hons) PGDMS Len Tildsley is the Principal of Buxton & Leek College which was formed in 2012 when Leek College joined Buxton College as part of the University of Derby. Len has worked in further education for over 30 years. His teaching career began at what was then Cauldon College of Further & Higher Education in Stoke On Trent where he taught computer science and software engineering. After a number of academic, management and senior roles at Stoke On Trent College, Preston College and Shrewsbury College, where he was Vice Principal for Curriculum & Quality; Len was appointed as the Principal of Buxton & Leek College in January 2013. Len is a Governor at Thistley Hough Secondary Academy in Stoke On Trent which is part of the Creative Education Trust. He is also a member of the Association of Colleges national portfolio group on learning technologies, Chair of the Association of Staffordshire Colleges and represents Staffordshire Principals on the Stoke and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership board and the Stoke and Staffordshire Education Trust and ESIF Committees. [Updated 2017] Professor Malcolm Todd, Pro Vice‐Chancellor Malcolm Todd joined the University in 2014 as Dean, College of Law, Humanities & Social Sciences. He became Pro Vice‐Chancellor Student Experience on 1 July 2016. In this new role he is primarily responsible for taking the lead on all aspects of the University’s academic student experience to ensure a high quality experience for a diverse student population. Working with other senior leads to ensure the entire range of student facing services and touch points are positive and designed for purpose. [Updated 2016] Mr William Tucker ‐ Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Derbyshire William (Willie) Tucker was born in Port Glasgow Renfrewshire in 1945 but has lived in Derbyshire for over 40 years. He has lived in the village of Aston‐on‐Trent for 30 years. Mr Tucker retired in July 2005 after a career lasting 45 years with the cooperative Movement and at the date of his retirement he was Chief Executive of Midlands Cooperative Society. He is a former Chairman of Cooperative Insurance Society (CIS) and a former Director of the Cooperative Bank. Mr Tucker has been active in a number of charities in Derbyshire and was involved in Round Table in Derbyshire for 16 years. He was National Treasurer of the National Association of Round Tables from 1985‐ 86. He has been a serving Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire since 1993. Mr Tucker is been married to Jill and they have two daughters. [Updated 2017] Mr Rupert Turner DL Rupert Turner is a retired farmer. The farm, situated on the Chatsworth Estate, was formerly based on dairying but more recently principally based on sheep. Rupert was High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1993/4 and he is now a Deputy Lieutenant of the County. He was a member of the Probation Board for Derbyshire from 1995‐2006 and is currently Chairman of The New Eilt Association, running the salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Ailort in Inverness‐ shire. Rupert has been Churchwarden of St. Anne’s Church, Beeley, since 2008. He was formerly a director of Derbyshire Student Residences Ltd which is now a subsidiary company of the University. [Updated 2017] Mr Tony Walker HonDUniv Tony joined Toyota Manufacturing UK (TMUK) in 1990, as one of the first employees and played a fundamental role in the establishment and development of the company. From 2001 to 2010 he worked at Toyota Motor Europe in Brussels, holding various positions, including European Human Resources Vice President. He is currently Deputy Managing Director of TMUK and Managing Director of Toyota Motor Europe’s London Office. Tony is actively involved in national automotive sector affairs: he is President of the Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the trade association for the automotive industry, and is Chairman of the Business Environment and Skills Group of the Automotive Council. He is the Business in the Community (BITC) Prince’s Ambassador for Responsible Business in the East Midlands, a Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire and is active in the local community where he lives in the Ashbourne area. Tony is married with three grown up children and two grandchildren. She is retired from her post as Assistant Director ‐ Learning Support and Student Progress at The Open University in the South‐West. On moving to Buxton she joined the Further Education Governance Committee prior to the merger with Leek College and also served as Trustee and Board Member to High Peak Citizens Advice Bureau for 5 years. Christine has now retired from her role as a serving magistrate in the Adult and Family courts in Northern Derbyshire. [Updated 2017] Mrs Dawn Ward CBE Dawn is Chief Executive and Principal of Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC). She was promoted to a CBE in the Queens New Year’s Honours 2015 from the OBE that she received in 2007 for her services to Education and Skills. Dawn holds many board level positions across a range of market leading organisations associated with Further and Higher Education, has lead a range of regional/national groups related to the technical and vocational sector within the UK and has received numerous accolades for her leading contribution to skills. Dawn recently joined the Board of Governors at Repton School. Over the past 9 years she has led BSDC through a major transformation that is resultant in a truly global college offering a range of bespoke and innovative products to Europe, the Middle East and Asian territories. [Updated 2016] Honorary Professor Chris Warren [2016] Emeritus Professor Roger Waterhouse HonDUniv Roger Waterhouse was Director of Derbyshire College of Higher Education (1989‐1992) and then first Vice‐ Chancellor of the University of Derby (1993 to 2005). He was educated at King Edward VII Grammar School Sheffield and took the degree BA Philosophy and Psychology at Oxford in 1961. In the 1960s he taught social studies in both the secondary and further education sectors but perhaps the most influential formative experience came from his time teaching at Ma’abarot Kibbutz High School in Israel. In 1972 Roger was appointed Principal Lecturer in Philosophy at Middlesex Polytechnic where he rose to become Dean of Humanities and Combined Studies. In 1986 he moved to Wolverhampton Polytechnic where he took up the position of Deputy Director with responsibility for Academic Planning. He was widely sought as a consultant on the implementation of modular systems and associated programme design. He also advised on the use of credit accumulation and transfer and student exchange in Belgium, Germany, France, Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Republic of Ireland. From 1978 until 1987 Roger Waterhouse served on various boards, committees and working parties of the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA). In 1985 he was founder and first Chair of the South East Consortium for Credit Accumulation and Transfer (SEEC) a body that is still flourishing today. On arrival at Derby the task ahead was considerable. The college had less than 6,000 students and only 5% of students were undergraduates. There were just four degree programmes. As Chairman of Academic Board, Roger infused the idea of offering highly flexible, accessible education which provided new opportunities for a wide range of students. He commissioned a credit based modular scheme as a vehicle for programme design. The College won taught accreditation from the Council for National Academic Awards and also satisfied a CNAA inspection of the research training provision. University status was confirmed in January 1993, the first direct promotion from college of higher education to University in the sector. In 1998 the University merged with High Peak College, Buxton a well‐respected provider of further education in the north of the county. The transfer of the further and higher educational provision from outside Buxton to the new Devonshire Campus in the heart of Buxton followed the bold decision to purchase and restore the former Devonshire Royal Hospital site. This project was completed in September 2005 and staff and students now teach and learn in excellent refurbished rooms. Dr Ian Webster BSc CPFA Ian has been a member of the University’s Governing Council since 2014 and holds the position of Chair to the Audit and Risk Committee. Sensitivity: Internal After graduating from Bristol University, Ian qualified as an accountant. In 1981, he moved to Derbyshire, to work for the county council. In the 1990s, Ian spent five years as a consultant with an international accounting firm. He then became the finance director of an east midlands police force, a role he held for five years. This was followed by a spell of freelance working with troubled local education authorities. In 2005, Ian became the chief financial officer of a large unitary council. During his time as CFO, the council improved its governance, and became a top six performer. Ian retired in 2011 to undertake research in economic history at Sheffield Hallam University and was awarded his PhD in 2015. Emeritus Professor Paul Weller Paul Weller is Emeritus Professor at the University of Derby, working as a fractional (0.2 FTE) Professor in the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences, having retired from his substantive employment at the University at the end of July 2016. This follows over a quarter of a century in a variety of roles at the University, including as Director of the Religious Resource and Research Centre; Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer and Reader in Religious Studies; Head of Religious Studies; Head of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences; Head of Research and Commercial Development in the Faculty of Education, Health and Sciences; and Acting University Head of Research; and ending his substantive employment with the University as Head of Research (MPhil‐PhD Students and REF [Impact]) and Professor of Inter‐Religious Relations. He is a Trustee and former Vice Chair of the Multi‐Faith Centre at the University of Derby. He is now also a fractional (0.2 FTE) Professor in the Faith and Peaceful Relations Research Group of the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations at Coventry University; a fractional (0.2 FTE) Research Fellow in Religion and Society at Regent's Park College, University of Oxford; and Director of Religion and Belief Research and Training Ltd. He is author, among other publications, of Time for a Change: Reconfiguring Religion, State and Society (London: T & T Clark, 2005); Religious Diversity in the UK: Contours and Issues (London: Continuum, 2008); A Mirror for our Times: 'The Rushdie Affair' and the Future of Multiculturalism (London: Continuum, 2009); and co‐author of Religion and Belief, Discrimination and Equality: Britain in Global Contexts (London: Bloomsbury, 2013). He has provided training, consultancy and research on religion, equal opportunities and discrimination at local, regional, national and international levels, including for: the Inland Revenue; the Cabinet Office; UK government departments; and the European Union Socrates/Grundtvig adult education programme; the Equality and Human Rights Commission; Churches Together in Britain and Ireland and other bodies. He was a member of the Academic Advisory Group for the Ethnicity, Identity, Language and Religion Census Topic Group of the 2011 UK Census and (in 2011) of the Faith Advisers group advising the Secretary of State for Communities, other Ministers and civil servants in the Department for Communities and Local Government. He is a member of the Strategic Group of the Arts and Humanities Research Council Peer Review College, and acts as an expert evaluator for project proposals to the Research Executive and the Directorate General for Justice and Consumers of the European Commission. [2015] Professor Christine White Dr Ian Whitehead BA PhD FHEA Dr Ian Whitehead is the Academic Head University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL) and a staff governor nominated by Academic Board to the University’s Governing Council. He was awarded his PhD from Leeds University with a thesis examining the role of Medical Officers in the 1914‐ 1918 conflict. Subsequently, he has continued to research and publish on the medical history of the two world Sensitivity: Internal wars. He is the author of Doctors in the Great War (1999) and has contributed chapters to Facing Armageddon (1996), Passchendaele in Perspective (1998) and Medicine and Modern Warfare (1998). More recently, he has broadened his interests to include the social history of the Second World War, and has written several articles for Everyone’s War, the journal of the Second World War Experience Centre in Leeds.. He co‐edited, with Dr J M Bourne and Dr P H Liddle, two volumes comparing the international experiences of the world wars: The Great World War, 1914‐1945: Lightning Strikes Twice (2000) and The Great World War, 1914‐1945: Who Won? Who Lost? (2001). Ian continues to teach on the History programme at the University of Derby, which he joined in 1994. His teaching interests lie in modern British history, the history of twentieth century warfare and the history of medicine. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Mr Dave Wilcox Dave Wilcox was a Derbyshire County Councillor between 1981 and 2017. He was Chair of the UK Local Government Information Unit (LGIU), the leading local government think tank from 2003 to June 2014. Until July 2013 he was Chair of the Local Government Association European and International Board and was Leader of the County Councils Network Labour Group. He is a former Board Member of the Basic Skills Agency, the Improvement and Development Agency, National Foundation for Educational Research and a former Executive Member of USDAW, the shop workers’ Trade Union. He is a past Chairman of East Midlands Airport plc and over the years has filled various senior Derbyshire County Council political positions. [Updated 2017] Brigadier C E Wilkinson CBE TD DL Edward Wilkinson opened his first career with the National Coal Board and ended as General Manager of Associated Heat Services Ltd in 1971. He opened his second career with Leigh Interests plc, in the West Midlands and retired in 1994 as the Group Services Director. He was Chairman of The Coal Industry Society in 1969. Following National Service in The Sherwood Foresters, Edward served for 35 years in the Territorial Army ending 1985 as TA Adviser to the Commander in Chief with the rank of Brigadier. He was ADC to the Queen (1981‐1985). He was appointed OBE in 1977 and CBE in 1982. Edward was Chairman of the East Midlands T&AVRA (1985‐1994) and Vice Chairman of the Council of TAVRA’s (1990‐1994). He has served as a Deputy Lieutenant for Derbyshire since 1985, and was appointed High Sheriff in 1996. He served as governor of Repton School from 1993‐2007, Chairman of Repton School Foundation from 2000‐2007, President from 2007 to 2016 and now President Emeritus. Chairman of Derbyshire Crimebeat from 1997 to 2002. He became Lay Canon of Derby Cathedral (2001‐2007) and now is Lay Canon Emeritus. Edward was a Member of Derbyshire County Cricket Club General Committee from 1998 to its abolition in 2010. He was Chairman of the Derbyshire Army Benevolent Fund (1976‐2007), Trustee of Derbyshire Community Foundation (1996‐2007) and member of Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Fuellers, becoming Master in 1996. He is Freeman of the City of London. [Updated 2017] Mr Nicolas Willens BA Nick Willens studied Chemistry at St. Catherine's College, Oxford (1961‐1965) and worked for the BASF group for 33 years (1967‐2000), finally as Managing Director of their subsidiary, Elastogran U.K. Ltd, Alfreton (1990‐2000). Since retiring he has taken an active interest in community affairs and is Vice Chairman of Blackwell Parish Council. He has been a member of the University Court since 1997 and is a member of the University Court Advisory Group. Mr Ian Willgoose Director of Estate Management at the University of Derby. Mr David Williams David is Chairman of Geldards LLP, a law firm with around 350 staff and offices in Derby, Nottingham, Cardiff and London. After originally qualifying as a lawyer, David had careers also as a property developer and as General Manager of a major building society. After heading the property team at Geldards for many years, David has recently taken up responsibility for the private client team. Emeritus Professor Mike Wiser Mike Wiser was a Primary Headteacher in the Bahamas and in Derbyshire prior to entering Higher Education in Teacher Training at Matlock College of Education. Latterly, he was Dean of the School of Education and Social Science from 1994‐97 and Director of University Programmes in Israel from 1997 to full‐time retirement in 2001. Mr Donald Wood Donald Wood is a retired Chartered Mechanical Engineer. He was Director of Whessoe PLC, parent group which owned Aiton & Co. Ltd, Stores Road, Derby. He worked for the company for 30 years. Currently he chairs The Trustee Board of the Shaw Group UK Pension Scheme. The US based Shaw Group Inc. is the current owner of the Stores Road company. He served as governor of Derby College for several years after retirement. Mr Alan Woods HonDUniv DL Alan Woods was Chairman of the Governing Council for twelve years from 1990 to 2002. During his stewardship at Derby, the institution graduated from Derbyshire College of Higher Education to the University of Derby (1993) and became incorporated as a private company limited by guarantee (1995). Born in Leicester, Alan trained and qualified as a chartered accountant. After a period in practice in London, he moved to the Derby accountants Cooper‐Parry in 1972. Just over a year later he became partner in the firm. In 1992 he led negotiations for Cooper‐ Parry to merge with Prior and Palmer Nottingham creating one of the largest and most successful independent accountancy practices in the East Midlands. Alan was appointed Senior Partner in this new firm. From 1994‐8 Alan held the position of Non‐executive Director of the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary during the time it became a Trust. In the business sector, Alan’s activities have included Chairmanship of Derbyshire County Group CBI (1997‐8) and membership of the East Midlands Regional Council of the CBI (1993‐2002). Alan Woods has served as a member of the Chapter of Derby Cathedral (1999‐2002) and he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Derbyshire in 1997. Mike Wright is Professor of Entrepreneurship, Head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Department, Associated Director of the Enterprise Research Centre and founding Director of the Centre for Management Buy‐out Research at Imperial College Business School. Before moving to Imperial College he was for many years Professor of Financial Studies at the University of Nottingham. He holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Ghent and Derby, is a visiting professor at the University of Ghent and he is an Academician of the Academy of Social Science. He has published many books and articles on private equity, emerging economies, academic entrepreneurship, returnee entrepreneurs and serial entrepreneurs. He was ranked number one worldwide for entrepreneurship publications. A member of the BVCA Research Advisory Committee, he contributes extensively to the media and business conferences and teaches highly rated MBA courses on Venture Capital. He edits the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Academy of Management Perspectives. He is Chair of the Society for the Advancement of Management Studies. He is a keen road and off‐ road cyclist.
