Dear Friends,
Mission
We support people touched by breast and
ovarian cancer by providing comprehensive,
personalized services in an atmosphere of
warmth and compassion.
Guiding Principles
• We place the needs of our clients first.
• We empower clients by providing education
that helps them make informed decisions.
• We provide personalized services directly
and through partnerships across the
continuum of care.
• We value the experience, knowledge, and
involvement of volunteers, cancer survivors,
their families, and caregivers.
• We are committed to providing our services
free of charge.
Thank you for your passion, commitment, and belief in the mission of
Bay Area Cancer Connections. You provide inspiration and energy to our
remarkable staff and volunteers who have transformed what started as a
grassroots effort into a trusted community organization. We are pleased to
share our progress with you in this Report for Fiscal Year 2015.
Last year, with the support of 1,700 donors and 294 volunteers, BCC served
1,660 individuals across 14 counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. New
programs included a Couples Support Series, Yoga, Art Journaling, and a
six-week course on nutrition. At special presentations, our clients learned
about skin care, herbal supplements, blogging, and more. BCC also made
strides towards helping clients transition out of active treatment, empowering
them for the next phase of their life.
Cancer treatment is continually changing, as well as how clients find and
understand information. Evolution offers challenges but opportunities
abound. As an organization spurred by passion, hard work, and innovation,
BCC recognizes the importance of adapting to the needs of our community
and enhancing our programs and services to better serve our clients.
To accomplish our mission, your input is essential. We will continue to work
together to support the whole person, not just their cancer treatment, and
make a difference in the lives of those who need us most. As we look forward
to an impactful 2016, Bay Area Cancer Connections will continue to strive for
excellence in providing personalized services, offering hope and support to
people—and their loved ones—who are coping with breast or ovarian cancer.
Thank you for your loyal friendship and continued generosity. Together, we
are changing lives.
Sincerely,
Rina Bello

We rely on people like Katherine,
who are on the frontlines of client
care. Katherine works with many individuals who have
struggled to receive quality medical care, and worries
about the gap in resources that still exists in many areas of our own community. Some may wonder why the
Patser Program is still viable with the implementation of
the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and Katherine witnesses
this need on a daily basis, linking clients with programs
like ours.
i
“Although some patients have managed to get insurance,
many young women, not on their parents’ insurance, fall
between the cracks—income is a little too high for MediCal, but too low to make ACA premiums affordable,”
Katherine said. “Patser is the only resource for women
under 40 who have abnormal breast findings. Many of
our clients do not have health insurance, are low income,
and cannot afford necessary care.”
The Patser Program would not exist without the support of people like Katherine in the community—and we
thank her and all our referring clinics for their ongoing
partnership.

Since 2011, the Sutter Health Access to Care Program
has helped BCC continue to provide the Gabriella Patser
Program to Marin County. Funds help pay for free breast
screenings and diagnostics for uninsured women and men
living in Marin County.
We are tremendously thankful to Barbara Gross and
the Garden Court Hotel staff and management for
their ongoing support.
For nearly 30 years, the Garden
Court Hotel has provided elegant
accommodations in picturesque
downtown Palo Alto. Throughout
that time, the hotel has given back
to the greater San Francisco Bay
Area in a variety of ways including direct donations and hosting events. Their commitment to
serving the community extends
to Bay Area Cancer Connections,
where they have been a valued
partner for over 10 years.
The Garden Court Hotel has generously donated space for BCC’s
Annual Conference, provided hotel rooms for the Annual Spring
Benefit speakers, and entirely underwritten our most anticipated
event of the year, Pop, Pour and
10
Pair: Valentine’s Tasting Menu
and Champagne Pairing.
Our relationship with the Garden Court Hotel began with the
passionate leadership of Barbara Gross (General Manager
2001–2015). “My affinity to BCC
began through a personal relationship with Board Member
Karen Nierenberg,” she said.
“That connection enabled me to
understand BCC’s mission in an
insightful way. It became a very
easy decision to support the organization—both personally and
professionally.”
In 2012, in collaboration with
Barbara Gross, Tom Friedberg,
Karen Nierenberg, Chef Clive
The Donald and Rachel Valentine Foundation has supported BCC since 2004. Most recently, the foundation
committed to fund the continuation and expansion of
programs and services for ovarian clients and their families.

Berkman, and Mario Rinaldi, the
Garden Court Hotel hosted the
first Annual Pop, Pour and Pair
event. Their vision was to blend
the love for fine food and champagne with a meaningful cause.
Thanks to their profound generosity, this event has raised over
$80,000. “Working with the caliber of people at BCC is the ultimate reward of our partnership.
The depth of talent and commitment of their board, management,
and volunteers confirms our long
term association,” Barbara added.
The Garden Court is honored to
continue the partnership with
BCC under the leadership of their
new General Manager, Jeffery
Phillips.
Genomic Health was a sponsor for
BCC’s 11th Annual Conference and
7th Annual Spring Benefit featuring 8-time Emmy award-winning
journalist Lu Ann Cahn.
The Sand Hill Foundation has
supported BCC’s general fund since
2006. Their donation helps BCC continue to provide all our programs and
services free of charge.
Stanford Hospital & Clinics has
supported BCC since 2007. Most
recently, they sponsored our 7th Annual Spring Benefit and 11th Annual
Conference as silver level sponsors.
National Cable and
Telecommunications Association
has been a sponsor for BCC’s
fundraising events since 2006. Last
year they supported our 7th Annual
Spring Benefit, our largest fundraiser
of the year.
Seiler LLP has been a sponsor for
BCC’s Annual Spring Benefit as a
gold level sponsor since 2012. Last
year they continued to support our
7th Annual Spring Benefit featuring
Lu Ann Cahn.

Finding Her
Strength Again
An interview with Agnes, 54, breast cancer client.
What program has been the
most helpful for you?
I was excited to come to BCC
because I didn’t know anything about cancer. I came to
the Breast Cancer Newly Diagnosed & In-Treatment Support
Group and at first it was hard
to open up and express how I
was feeling. But in the group I
saw that everybody was doing
it and it was okay. When you
share with everyone who’s in
the same boat as you, you feel
safer. You realize that you’re
not alone and that we’re all in
this together.
How did the support group
help you?
It’s nice to hear from other
people who are feeling better.
I know what to expect from
talking to other women who
are a few months out ahead of
me. I can ask questions like:
18
What is chemo? What happens
after chemo? When will I lose
my hair?
Have you made any special
connections with anyone at
BCC?
I’ve made two friends in the
support group and we carpool
together, meet up for lunch or
coffee, and go for walks. I’m so
grateful for these new friendships. It’s very difficult dealing
with cancer and I don’t have
any family here. BCC is my
family.
What other programs have
helped you?
I’m a fitness freak and before
my diagnosis I would exercise
five days a week. I was surprised
when my body didn’t want to
cooperate anymore. What happened to me, I would think. I
was so weak from treatment.

The yoga classes at BCC have
been very helpful. Yoga makes
me feel calm and it’s been nice
to get moving again, in a gentle
way.
How do you feel today?
I look at the world in a different way. Life feels more meaningful. Before cancer, I was
just working like a robot and
taking care of my kids and the
house. I need to take care of
myself now. But I know that I
don’t have to do it alone. Having support has helped me so
much. I feel at home here—
safe, comfortable, and stronger.
