Hook In nstallation In Open tthe SQL Hook Client application Addingg/Modifying a Monitored d SQL Instance Doublee click Server\\Instance Entry Select <<Add New Daatabase> from m the list on tthe left hand side. Now fil l in the entryy form. Alias – Aliass is a readable e name for the SQL Instancce. It should be unique. Server\Instaance – This is the SQL Instaance Server\Instance – if tthe default instance, then it can be justt the server name Port – Port should only b be used if non n‐standard an nd the SQL Br owser is not running Trusted Con nnection – This is the manner in which tto connect too the SQL Insttance, either via a Trusted windows connection or via a SQL u user account.. onnect to thee SQL Instancee if Trusted Connection is not selected. SQL Username – This is tthe SQL User account to co SQL Passwo ord – This is th he SQL User p password to cconnect to th e SQL Instancce if Trusted C Connection iss not selected d. Comments – – These comm ments can be e used to save e some inform mation about the SQL Instaance Active – The e active flag in ndicates whe ether the SQL Instance is avvailable to bo oth the SQL H Hook Monitorr and the SQL Hook Clientt Alert Email – This is the e email addresss used to send d Alerts to When yyou have com mpleted the e entry form, cliick Save. When you click SSave a basic cconnectivity ttest will take place, if the SQL Insstance is available, the enttry will be savved – This maay take a mom ment as it is p populating all the required back end information for the SQL Instance e. In casees where the ccurrent user d does not have e access to W WMI queries oon the target server, you can specify a W WMI Proxy user fo or the SQL Instance by clickking the WMI Proxy button n. n now click Close. You can You can n go in and ch hange these ssettings at an ny time, with tthe exceptionn of the Serveer\Instance w which is locked d once you save. TTo modify the e Server\Instaance you will need to delette the entry aand create a n new one. To mod dify an entry, you would open the Serve er\Instance EEntry page an d select the A Alias or Serveer\Instance fro om the list on n the leftt (Alias or Serrver\Instance depends on a setting in O Options page) . The entry form will fill in with the e settings from the entry, you can thenn make modiffications and cclick Save. To deleete an entry, select it from m the list on th he left and click Delete. To cleaar history for an entry, select an entry ffrom the list o on the left annd click Clear History NOTE: You can onlyy add as manyy instances as your license e will allow. To Threshold Monitoring is the proccess SQL Hook takes to ale et alerted eve ery time a perrformance co unter spikes, the alerts aree triggered frrom an make ssure that a user doesn’t ge average value over a period of time. As everyy system is diffferent, by deefault, no threesholds are configured. NOTE: Before you sset thresholdss on your cou unters, you sh hould establiish a baselinee, to do this, sset up the SQ QL Instance to o monito or and allow SSQL Hook to capture the vvalues over aa period of tim me during avverage load. Once you havve the baselin nes (nominal)) values, you should set th he thresholdss up to be abo ove the baseeline. To editt your thresho olds, open Ale ert Setup and d double click Edit Threshoold Monitorin ng. From the dropdown in the upper right, select your SQ QL Instance. ormance coun nters to set up Threshold M Monitoring onn are sorted b by Object Name, you can cchange the Your avvailable perfo sortingg by clicking o on the headerr. To Monitorr a particular performancee counter, tickk the Monitorr box. You will then be pre esented with the Setup Mo onitor Items w window. From m here you caan set up you ur monitoring criteria: Operator – Here you sho ould select the e type of ope erator your m onitoring will use (=, <>, <<, >,>=. =<) Threshold – – This is the numeric limit yyou have assigned to the pperformance counter d is exceeded Email Flag – – If ticked, an alert will be ssent by emaill if the counteer is threshold d as well as an n entry on the e Alerts page,, if not ticked, then no email will be sen nt, but an enttry will still bee made on thee Alerts page. When yyou are finish hed, click Save e – You shoulld then repeaat for all the ccounters you w wish to monitor. Editing Non‐Metric Mon nitoring Non‐M Metric Monitoring is the mo onitoring SQLL Hook perforrms which is nnot directly reelated to the performancee counters, an nd instead d focuses on o other types of alerts, such as no backup ps being perfoormed lately,, xp_cmdshell being activee etc. By defaultt, all non‐mettric alerts are active from ssetup. Open A Alert Setup an nd double clicck Edit Non‐M Metric Monito oring. From t he dropdown n in the upper right, selectt your SQL Instancce. nge whether you monitor a non‐metricc alert or not, either tick o r untick the eentry as needed.
