HowareEarthquakeDatacollected?
Anearthquakegeneratesseismicwavesthattravelviamanypathsthroughtheearthtotherecordingstation(seefigurelowerright
below).Seismicwavesarerecordedusingaseismometer,whichislinkedtoadataacquisitionsystemwhichrecordsandalso
transmitsthedatainrealtimetotheArrayNetworkFacilityinSanDiego,California,viasatellite,cellphone,ortheInternet.Thedata
arearchived,indexed,andthenprocessedbycomputers.Trainedseismologistsconductfinalanalysesandinterpretationsofthe
seismicdata.Theresultingseismicdataproductsarestudiedbytheseismologicalcommunityformanyresearchendeavors.
Thisdiagramillustratesthesequenceofeventsfromthetimeanearthquakeoccursuntilthedataarestoredinthe
computerizedseismicdataarchive.Notethatthewavebetweentheearthquakeandtherecordingstationdoesnotrepresent
howanactualseismicwavetravelsthroughtheearth.
Whatareseismograms?
SeismogramsshowhowtheEarthmovesataspecificlocationastimepasses,andareusedtodeterminethelocationandmagnitude
(size)ofanearthquake.Three-componentseismometers,likethatusedatyourseismicstation,simultaneouslyrecordmotioninthe
verticalandhorizontaldirections.SeismogramsshowhowtheEarthmovesataspecificlocationastimepasses.Thehorizontalaxis
oftheseismogramsbelowshowtime.Inthiscasetimemarksareshownevery10minutes.Theverticalaxisshowsthedirectionof
groundmovement,i.e.verticalmovementisshownonBHZ,horizontalmotioninthenorth/southdirectiononBHNandhorizontal
motionintheeast/westdirectiononBHE.TheexamplebelowshowsgroundmotionrecordedatanotherUSArraystation(TA_C07A)
fromamagnitude7.2earthquakethatoccurredonDecember19,2007,intheAleutianIslandsatadepthof56km.Theorigintimeof
theearthquake(O)andthearrivaloftheP,SandSurfacewavesareindicated.NotethatSurfacewavescanbeoftwotypes,
horizontalLovewaves(L)andRayleighwaves(R)whichmovebothinthehorizontalandverticalplanes.Damagetostructures
usuallyoccursfromshakingofthegroundduetoSorSurfacewaveswhichproducethelargestmotion.
Whentheseismographdoesnotdetectanymovementcausedbyanearthquake,theseismogramshowsarelativelyflatline.
However,theseinstrumentsareextremelysensitiveandgroundmotionfromlocalsourcessuchaswind,traffic,animals,people,and
oceanwaves,willoftenberecordedandappearassmallwigglesornoiseinaseismogram.
