Staff
Warm welcome to Mrs Vanessa Hunter for returning from her maternity leave. Mrs
Hunter will be teaching Year 5C. We wish Gillian Flick good luck with the birth of her
child. She will be on maternity leave next year until Term 2.Kiraana Moodley will take
her class and will ensure the teaching and learning programs continue.
Quran Competition
One of the highlights of the primary events in last term was the Quran Competition. It
allows us to showcase the very best reciters of the holy Quran in our college.
Congratulations to all students who had been selected! I would like to thank all our
Islamic teachers for preparing students for the competition and many thanks to our Arabic
teachers for preparing students for the Nasheeds.
Values for this term– Happiness and Pride
The values of Happiness and Pride will be the focus in this term.
Happiness - It means love and peace inside, knowing I am loved and giving everyone good wishes.
Pride - It means feeling good, fulfilled and confident in ourselves and our personal achievements.
We believe that the primary development of values and character in children come essentially from students’ families. Our college wishes
to build on these foundations by working together with parents to reinforce values that create better communities. Children are helped to
understand that if they think carefully about certain values, their behaviour and experiences will be more positive and the quality of
their learning further enhanced.
Prep News
Wow! What an amazing Term 3 it has been for our Prep students. This term the students were able to develop their
writing skills as they were emerged into a world of imagination and creativity. The students learnt how to make their
writing more interesting by adding descriptive language (fancy words) and creating beautiful illustrations. They have
been encouraged to explore a range of different literature such as the Hairy MaClary series and the Fancy Nancy series.
The students have thoroughly enjoyed listening to these stories and developing their ability to use their imagination and
develop a new vocabulary to enhance their writing. It was good to see the students dressed up as their favourite book
character for our ‘Book Character Parade’, they all looked wonderful in their costumes.
Students have enjoyed learning about different materials and were lucky enough to have Street Science come and consolidate their understanding by allowing them to explore different materials through a range of experiments using their
five senses. In Mathematics the students have continued learning about numbers and were introduced to subtraction
strategies. The students are now experts are designing their own maps and can explain where to find the ‘x’ mark by
using directional language.
We hope everyone had a very relaxing and enjoyable holiday and are ready for another term full of fun and exciting
thing!
Year 1 News
In Science, students have been investigating how sound is made. We have conducted some experiments that have shown sound being produced from something
vibrating. Class 1B made some guitars at home creating our own musical instruments that make sound through vibrations.
For English students presented their favourite character through a poster made at
home. Students talked about the special traits of their character, what their character looked like and other main characters from their story book. During the oral
presentation they showed some of their favourite pictures in their story book and
read a paragraph to their class.
Year 2 News
Term 3 was yet again another busy and
fun-filled term! Students in Year 2
learnt about their connections with the
world in Geography. We stepped back
in time with a compare and contrast of
everyday living in History. Science was
exciting as we discovered the forces of
push and pull and participated in our
Rocket Science Incursion, where we
became scientist and launched rockets!
This provided an opportunity for student to apply their knowledge further. In
Health students learnt the very important value of diversity and inclusion.
They will now admire people for being unique. English helped students gain
researching skills and they discovered many interesting facts about Australian birds for writing information reports.
Students also showed poetic skills by learning to rhyme and count syllables. Students now know how to read a clock and
tell time and multiply in Mathematics, so hopefully our students will be helpful during shopping and being on time!!
Our students popped up as little characters right out of storybooks on Character Parade day during Book Week and it
was great to see their bright and creative costumes. We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday and is ready to tackle
another busy term, wrapping up the year with a bang!

Grade 6 2016 Winter Camp – Tallebudgera Beach School
39 students and 4 teachers ventured on their journey to the Tallebudgera Beach Camp on the 25 th of July this year. The
philosophy of the camp was to develop independence and self-growth by embracing the five principles, co-operation,
confidence, organisation, persistence and resilience. All problem solving activities were based around team work and
positive communication. The highlights of the trip were the water based activities like Body Surfing, Surf Awareness
and Kayaking. Rock Climbing on a 10M wall was another activity that the students enjoyed. Most of them accepted the
challenge and reached the top of the wall. Also a morning walk by the beach was very refreshing.
The staff at the camp facility made sure that our requests for halal meals and some special dietary needs were met. The
facilities were clean and well-spaced. Despite nearly 200 students being there, our students felt comfortable and
enjoyed their meals and activities without any problems. The camp teachers provided us a special hall for salah and they
displayed extra sensitivity towards our female students.
The ICB staff and students were very well looked after and came back refreshed and happy only complaining about how
quick the time went.

NAPLAN
NAPLAN reports were sent to parents for children in Years 3 & 5. The report shows your child’s results and a comparison of your child’s performance against all other Australian students in their year level. Teachers use the NAPLAN results to determine your child’s areas of strength and where future focus is required and how best to provide support or
extension activities. Although this test provides us with important data, it must be remembered that it is one piece of
data. It is a snapshot of how your child is performing in exam conditions. Teachers use a variety of data to gain a more
complete understanding of how your child is progressing according to the curriculum.
Uniform
A reminder is about our college uniform policy. We accept completely BLACK leather or leather look lace up or Velcro shoes ONLY! No shoes should have coloured stripes, ticks or soles and should not be canvas. Students are only allowed to wear their sports shoes on the day they have a PE lesson. All children are required to wear the College Hat.
Years 3-6 need to wear their House colour hat on their designated PE day and boys are required to wear black belt to
keep their shirt tucked in.
Class Placement
Each year teachers face the very challenging and complex task of placing students in classes for the following year. Students will be allocated to classes by using the following criteria to ensure that the classes that are formed are in the best
interests of ALL the students. These criteria are not in order of importance.
 Friendship – students who need support from another close friend.
 Friendship – students who are too friendly with another student and are best separated so both students can
concentrate on their studies.
 Behaviour needs – students who are best separated so their learning and the learning of other students is not
affected.
 Language – students who need to be together to provide language support for each other.
 Special Needs – these may be social, intellectual, emotional or physical.
 Cultural Balance – each class is formed to have a range of nationalities and cultures.
 Personalities – in some special cases the personalities of both teachers and students are considered before a decision is made regarding the placement of a student.
 Gender Balance – we also like to keep a balance of boys and girls in each class.
As well as the above criteria, all classes will be formed to be academically and socially balanced.
It would be greatly appreciated if parents do not make requests for placement with a specific teacher or class.
We appreciate the support and consideration of all parents in this matter.
Teaching & Learning
An In-School PD was organised for Primary teachers on Seven Steps to Writing Success by Dianne Scott. The quality
and delivery of the presentation was excellent. Dianne’s current teaching experiences and the examples she shared gave
validity and a practical approach to the training. It is the great start to our Seven Steps journey.
The Primary School Curriculum recognises the act of writing as part of the language learning process. The key
components of writing are spelling, grammar, punctuation, text types, handwriting, sentence structure and vocabulary.
Writing is a skill and a craft that needs to be taught and which is learned from practice.
