(My thanks to Danny Hall for sharing this wonderful
illustration written by Harvey Mackay.)
A young boy asked his mother what he should do in order to be successful when he grew up. The
mother thought for a moment, and then told her son to bring her a pencil. Puzzled, the boy found a
pencil and gave it to her. "If you want to do good," she said, "You have to be just like this pencil."
"What does that mean?" her son asked.
"First," she said, "You'll be able to do a lot of things, but not on your own. You have to allow yourself
to be held in someone's hand.”
"Second, you'll have to go through a sharpening from time to time, but you'll need it to become a better
pencil.”
"Third, you'll be able to correct any mistakes you might make.”
"Fourth, no matter what you look like on the outside, the most important part will always be what's
inside.”
"And fifth," the mother finished, "You have to press hard in order to make a mark."
What great advice from a simple illustration of a pencil! This past Sunday in worship we talked about
how God speaks to us through stories and illustrations. Using the illustration of the Disney Classic
“Beauty and the Beast” we learned that true beauty is found within. It’s the same with the pencil
illustration. No matter what we may look like on the outside, the most important part will always be
what’s inside.
The moral to the pencil story? If you want to make your mark, sharpen your skills.
The moral to the story of Beauty and the Beast? By demonstrating sacrificial love to others, we
have the potential to change another life... and in the process, we might be changed, as well. May it
be so.

There are so many people to thank for helping make the parade a success. If you
helped in any way, it is greatly appreciated.
The parade was a success because of your

RESPITE CARE
Respite for our Special Needs Children is a
wonderful way to be a part of one of our
ministries at New Haven. It is a great time to
have fun with the children and know that you
are giving them your time and love and also
allowing their parents to have some special
time to themselves. We are needing some
more adults to help with this activity so that
we can invite a few more children who would
like to join us. If you think this would be an
opportunity for you, please contact the office
or Rose Unterschuetz. Our next Respite will
be this Saturday July 13th from 3-7 PM. You
are welcome to come for all 4 hours or just
part of the time.

Summer Worship Series:
“The Gospel IN Disney”
Join us for our summer worship series as we look
at familiar Disney movies. These modern classics
speak to us about what it means to be human and
the struggles that we face. Jesus used stories to
speak to us about what it means to be human. In
a fun and adventurous way, let us take an opportunity to see how the Gospel speaks to us through
these illustrations:
June 30th: “The Gospel IN Disney - Aladdin”
July 7th:
“The Gospel IN Disney - Beauty and
the Beast”
July 14th: “The Gospel IN Disney - Pocahontas”
As a follow-up to worship that morning, we will be
showing each of these movies in the Parlor that
afternoon! Popcorn and drinks provided! Stay
tuned!
