To me editing is a collaborative process and it is my job to craft the director’s vision into the best programme within the
limitations of the time allowed and the material available. I am motivated with the unique delights and challenges
each new project brings. I love the variety of my work and the exceptional directors and crew with whom I have
collaborated. I bring an intuitive, pragmatic approach to editing and am very proud of the films that I have edited.
I joined BBC Bristol as an Assistant Film Editor after graduating in 1984. Here I worked both as an assistant and
dubbing editor on network television programmes including Probation and Survival Team, both observational
documentary series, Whicker’s World and programmes in the Nature and Natural World strands. I was lucky to
work with some first class editors and this combined with working on film gave me an excellent grounding in story,
structure and pacing that are crucial for a good editing. In 1989 I left the BBC to become a freelance film editor, since
then I have been editing broadcast programmes, commercials and animations for both BBC and Independent
Television Companies in the UK and USA.
I was always interested in the technological advancements in programme making and so in 1992 started editing on
Lightworks and Avid. 1998 I set up a cutting-room in Bristol at Splice where we had four offline and one online Avid. I
now have an HD editing suite in Wiltshire where I live, with Avid, Premiere and FCPX and use each programme
working regularly in London, Bristol and throughout the UK either with or without kit.
As well as the high profile broadcast work I am also interested Independent film making particularly films with a
positive environmental or social justice message that can give people hope. I am keen to work with a small team as
sound recordist and editor on a long term documentary project. In my spare time I enjoy making film portraits with
friends, helping first time directors and have edited various pilots, trailers and promotional films for colleagues.
