Bilbo’s story
A little songbook for Daisy
Introduction
This is a story of long ago. It is for you my little Daisy. It was your favourite
story and now it became a songbook. In this book you will find all the
songs that describe the character of the famous "The Hobbit".
I hope that you, my little Daisy, and all the children around the world will
enjoy it!
1 - Bilbo Baggins
It was a windy and rainy night...
"Grandpa can you tell me the story again?" asked Daisy
"What story?"
"The beautiful one… with elves, trolls, dwarves and hobbits."
"Oh, sure… let’s start it, my little Daisy”
Once upon a time there was a hobbit, he was afraid of everything but, he
found his courage and his happiness in a journey to a lonely mountain.
“Do you remember all the characters of the story?" "No grandpa tell me
about them"
"So Daisy the most important is Bilbo, Bilbo the hobbit..."
At first lazy, fat, insecure;
Soon a brave, adventure, self-confident creature;
Son of belladonna Took and Bungo Baggins is he;
Food, clothes, visitors:
this are the things that Bilbo love;
Scared when Gandalf invites him to go with him,
Happy when he stays at home,
brave when he saves his friends:
like this Bilbo feels
Food, someone that helps him to grow, and the things that he knows:
these are the things that Bilbo needs;
the darkness when he his alone, he can’t think to lose the tissues:
this are the things that Bilbo fears
Who gives help to the company, hope to Gandalf, happiness to his friends:
like this Bilbo is
the elves, to stay on his chair when with his boiler, to see Gandalf when he
is gone:
this are the things that Bilbo would like to see

13 dwarves, a wizard, and elves:
This are the friends that Bilbo have.
At the start a very respectable hobbit,
At the end an adventurous but not perfect hobbit.
But this is Bilbo, a very kind hobbit.
"Grandpa he is my favourite character! He is so strong but so friendly, he is
like me!"
Yes, dear, he is.
2 - Gandalf
"Think back to Gandalf, he is important too: he is an old wizard that invites
Bilbo to do this adventure. He is like his grandpa"
“Like me and you grandpa! But you are stronger than him.”
“Yes, dear and I am even more stronger whit you… but now let’s sing this
poem”
He is the son of magic and oddities,
With long and white beard the wizard is, so adventurous, and invisible can
be,
This is one of the most popular wizards in the world,
Lonely and wise but sometimes so charming,
Like this the wizard can be
He lives the adventure, and a house doesn’t have,
He smokes the pipe he likes, dwarves songs he loves, and fireworks colours
he likes to see,
He needs Bilbo as friend and an adventure to live,
He who fears the darkness and Thorin’s avarice
Who gives help, courage and trust
He who would like to see Bilbo’s change, what Bilbo has in his pocket at the
end of the adventure
This is Gandalf, a wizard with so many adventures and years on the lean
shoulders.
3 - Gollum
"Daisy do you know Gollum? He was a hobbit but then he became a
monster. He is the guardian of the ring."
He like a hobbit was, but no one can recognize him now,
Scary and ugly dangerous and crazy is this alone creature.
Fishes rings and guesses the ugly scary love,
At the beginning happy and angry,
but Bilbo the ring stole so
Insecure, desperate, and fearful,
Orcs to eat, real friends, and a true house,
Are these the things that the pitiful creature needs,
But also he is scared of Bilbo’s words, to lose his ring, and the riddle race,
But also he needs to see the sunlight, to see for ever his ring and Bilbo,
when he is invisible,
But these are not the things that the creature can see,
Because he can’t go out and no one can see him,
because he lives in the mountain, under the orcs’ cave,
is this Gollum a creature that we can’t see?
4 - Thorin
“He is too bad. I am so scared of Gollum..”
“Don’t be scared because now is the turn of some courageous people…
now it is the turn of the king of the dwarves; do you know, my little Daisy,
his name?”
“I don’t remember, but I think he has a very very big shield…”
“Yes pretty Daisy but his name is Thorin, Thorin with the big bard, Thorin
with the big shield, Thorin with a lot of courage, but also the dwarf with a
strange need of his real house and also need of a destination to reach. So
let’s start this poem…”
Thorin oak-shield
brave, noble, short and self-confident
son of Thror, son of Thràin, king of Erebor
who loves the Arkenstone, his companion and his lost kingdom
who feels firm, responsible of his companions’ lives
who fears failure, Smaug the dragon and to lose his 14 friends
who gives hope, courage and personal support
who needs Bilbo’s help, brave people and the mountain’s key
who would like to see the splendor of his reign, Smaug’s death and the
Arkenstone
who was resident of Erebor
the king under the mountain
”Oh dear, he’s so strong, but I really think that he needs a friend, don’t you
think so, grandpa?”
“I don’t now Daisy, but we can discover this by continuing the story, do you
want?…”
“ Yes grandpa! Come on….”
“Yes, but slowly, a story needs his time to be told..”
5 - Smaug
“So daisy, who is the next?”
“I don’t know ; can you give me a clue?”
“Yes, he is red like the fire...”
“ hmmm … another clue grandpa!”
“Ok he is so beautiful but he is not cheerful, in fact he is so greedy…,
greedy do you know what it means?”
“No, I don’t , what does it mean?”
“Greedy is a person so bad because he doesn’t have a person to love, so he
only wants objects and treasures”
“Shall we go on with the story of Smaug, little Daisy?”
“Yes grandpa! Can I seat on your laps, I’m so tired…”
“Sure my little Daisy, come here because I’m a little afraid of this character.”
A scary, dangerous, enormous and terrible dragon
who shoots fire from his mouth, he has a golden armor and have teeth like
blades and claws like spears
who loves his treasures, his fame and himself
who feels strong, invincible and rich
who burned Erebor, stole the dwarves’ treasure and killed their king
who fears whom can steal his gold, if someone is strong more that he is
who gives terror, death and desolation
who would like to see Thorin’s death, the Bridge along the Lake burning,
and to know who Bilbo is.
Resident of Erebor, under the mountain.
“Who wins at the end, grandpa?”
“We’ll discover that at the end but remember it’s not a problem if Bilbo
doesn’t win because what he needs is someone that loves him , and he had
the…”
“He has the dwarves, grandpa, the dwarves!”
6 - The dwarves
“Daisy, do you remember the names of the 13 dwarves?”
“Yes grandpa, I do. Thorin, Balin Dwalin,Oin Gloin Bifur Bofur Bombur Fili
Kili… I don’t remember the others.”
“ Ok, don’t worry, I remind you the story of all the 13 dwarves…”
The 13 dwarves with their big noses
They sing a song about Smaug
Bilbo they need
To find the treasure of their king
And Gandalf helps them
To squash and cut the ogre’s head
They love their beard
And respect the man that becomes a bear
They fears Smaug the dragon
Who beated their legion
The mountain was their home,
but now a dragon lives inside:
The best thing in their life is gone
7 - Bard
“Now I’d like to tell you about Bard.”
“Yes grandpa, I don’t remember him.”
“Bard was the man of the bridge along the lake. He is one of my favourite
characters, he is very brave.”
Bard,
A valiant, generous, bold and kind with a cunning mind
He killed the dragon with the black arrow
Who loves money, his village and his sons
Who needs a really good target, a lot of fortune and the arrow black
To kill the dragon and to home come back
Who fears the dragon’s fire that can burn his people alive
Who gives safety to his city, hope and happiness
Who would like to see his city’s splendor
The end
“So this was the end of the story, my little daisy… did you like it?”
“Yes, it was fabulous! But who told to you the story?”
“It’s a secret! Very important”
“Oh tell me, please”
“He was my grandpa, and…”
“And what was his name?”
“His name was Bilbo Baggins!”
“Oh so my great great grandfather was the super Bilbo Baggins?”
“Yes, little Daisy!”
“So I must have some of his courage and his happiness”
“Yes, dear. You have his courage and also something else! Because every
hobbit has something special like Bilbo ”
