S
ince its debut in June 2013, Edible Baja Arizona has become a bit
of a media sensation. In just nine months, more than 200 local
businesses—eager to reach readers that are passionate about all
things related to food and drink in our special region—have become
advertising partners.
Edible Baja Arizona is a fixture on coffee tables and nightstands,
reaching 90,000 readers every eight weeks. Hundreds of people flock to
our new publication celebration events. The magazine has, quite simply,
changed the media landscape in Baja Arizona. Print is, indeed, very
much alive.
In its beautifully designed pages, printed on a high quality matte
stock and perfect bound, Edible Baja Arizona tells compelling stories that
support and promote the growers, producers, innovative chefs, food and
beverage artisans and other culinary professionals. The oft-repeated
concept of “shelf life” is truly epitomized by Edible Baja Arizona—no
one is throwing this publication away.
Through gorgeous photography and quality journalism, Edible Baja
Arizona celebrates the joys of eating and drinking locally, explores the
rich culinary and cultural heritages of Baja Arizona, and advocates for
the importance of growing a strong local foods economy.
We empower readers to grow gardens, explore urban homesteading,
and pursue sustainable practices like water harvesting and renewable
energy. Our readers are informed, engaged, affluent and passionate
about supporting our mission and our advertising partners that make it

Greetings from Edible Baja Arizona,
We know you are besieged with solicitations to spend money on marketing. In a crowded and noisy
marketplace, we believe we have created an island of calm and quality—and we invite you to consider Edible
Baja Arizona. In less than a year, more than 200 local businesses in Southern Arizona have enthusiastically
embraced the magazine and become advertising partners. The reason? There is simply no other medium with
the combination of editorial and production quality, geographic and demographic reach, incredibly costeffective rates, and a hyper-local niche.
WHO ARE WE?
Last June we published the first edition of Edible Baja Arizona to rave reviews. We have published five
issues—every eight weeks—and have grown to 140 pages, the largest of all Edible magazines in North
America. The latest issue is enclosed. We are 100 percent locally-curated and published, though we do license
a national brand that tourists recognize from 80 other cities in the United States and Canada. The magazine
unabashedly celebrates all things local about food and drink in this rich region we call Baja Arizona, telling
compelling stories of artisans, innovators, purveyors and chefs. Beyond just a “foodie” magazine, we seek
cultural intersections, explore heritages and make discoveries, bringing this region to life in our beautiful
pages.
WHERE ARE THE MAGAZINES FOUND? WHO READS THEM?
Edible Baja Arizona can be found all over the metro Tucson area in hundreds of select outlets and in all the
major population centers south of the Gila River (Pima, Cochise, Graham, and Santa Cruz counties). Our
current press run is 25,000 copies. We are constantly improving our distribution system to match target
readers with the magazine. Find us at restaurants and cafes, grocery stores, farmers’ markets, bookstores,
retail shops, fitness centers, hotels and resorts. Since we invest heavily in top quality editorial content, our
magazines are shared widely and are truly collectible. We even do a brisk business selling back issues. The
magazine essentially selects its demographic target: an informed, passionate, affluent consumer that is seeking
quality products and experiences. Your business should make their acquaintance!
DOES PRINT ADVERTISING WORK IN THE DIGITAL AGE?
In the words of New York Times media columnist David Carr: “Print continues to be a remarkable
technology…with its own durable glories.” He’s not talking about newspapers, but the power of excellent
niche print media. There is something almost magical in the juxtaposition of excellent typography, luscious
photographs, the sheer tangibility of holding a well-designed artifact in your hands. You can’t get that
experience from online, radio, TV, a tablet or smart phone.
Edible Baja Arizona features outstanding photography and design, top-notch journalism, and is printed on
a high quality matte stock and perfect bound. It’s something to cherish and return to again and again. And
here’s the secret: This singular editorial package creates an unparalleled environment for your
advertising. Our readers report that they pick up the magazine specifically to read our gorgeous ads. Edible
Baja Arizona is a trusted guide to shopping locally in Baja Arizona for products and services. It is also a
great resource for tourists. We’ve heard this refrain often from Edible Baja Arizona readers: “I didn’t realize
edible BAJA ARIZONA • 307 S Convent Ave, Tucson, AZ 85701 • Advertising: Jared McKinley 520.370.5864
Arizona was so cool.” Celebrating what makes Baja Arizona special is a huge part of our editorial mission.
By advertising with us, you are aligning yourself with the magazine, its mission, and are making a
direction connection with more than 90,000 like-minded readers. (And yes, our magazine also exists in
the digital realm, available on our website and in a dynamic digital flip-book edition.)
DO YOU ACCEPT ADVERTISING FROM NON-FOOD & DRINK-RELATED
BUSINESSES?
Yes! But we do have a filter regarding our acceptance policy and we don’t accept just any ad. Our readers
appreciate the quality of the advertising and we want to keep it that way. We curate ads that we think our
readers will appreciate. We may consult with you about your design. We take extra care in determining ad
placement and creating a special “rhythm” in the pages of the magazine. We run a perfect ad to editorial
ratio. Your ad is just as important as any other component of the magazine.
WE TAKE CARE OF YOU.
We don’t take your business for granted. Our staff constantly works to improve the value and effectiveness of
your ads. We offer free top quality design and production to all contracted clients We are happy to feature
your business in our social media. We consider you to be a partner in building a strong and prosperous local
foods economy.

JANUARY 9, 2014
EDIBLE BAJA ARIZONA
GAINS TRACTION
Nearly nine months ago, Doug Biggers, co-founder of
the Tucson Weekly, embarked on something rather crazy.
He launched a print magazine in the digital age.
And then something really crazy happened. As the fourth
issue hits the streets this week, interest in Edible Baja
Arizona has exploded. The page count has nearly doubled
and advertising has tripled.
"To see the growth in advertisers from 60 in the first
issue to 175 in the last issue, we must have touched a
nerve," Biggers said. "I think the main thing is the editorial
quality, from the quality of content to the quality of printing.
There are a lot of magazines, but there's nothing quite like
it. The community was very ready to have this celebratory,
substantive communication focused on growing the local
economy. That's a very broad spectrum, from growing little
tiny businesses into larger companies, to addressing how
we feed ourselves here. Ninety-five percent of the things
you eat are trucked in. If that was to stop, this place would
be a Hohokam village 100 years after they were gone. It's
addressing on a fundamental level how we can change the
food system."
Like-focused publications have popped up in a number
of communities across the country. Biggers pays a small
fee for the rights to the Edibles banner, but beyond that, the
content and the approach of the magazine are his.
"I think we're plugging into a zeitgeist out there as more
people find local food increasingly important to add to an
improved quality of life and strong local economies,"
Biggers said.
Edible Baja is available at locations throughout town. For

Here are some terms you may need to know:
• Bleed - To print right up to the edge of the page, printers print past the edge of the page, then
cut it to size. The area that's printed on, but is cut off, is called the bleed.
• High-res/DPI - Dots Per Inch, also called resolution. This describes how many dots are
printed in one square inch of paper. Computers monitors have much lower resolution (72) than
print (300+), so images that look big on your computer need to look huge on your computer to
look good in print.
• CMYK/RGB - Our printer combines Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and BlacK to make colors.
Computers use Red, Green, and Blue.
• TIFF - An image file format that is very large, but doesn't compress the image to save space, and
so is great for print.
• JPG - A compressed image file format that trades quality for a smaller file size. JPG's can be
used as long as they are set to high quality (low/no compression) and are at least as big as the size
required (see the opposite side for pixel dimensions for ads)

Ad Size Guide
What Should I Put On My Ad?
Deciding just what to do with your ad space can be tough, but after creating hundreds of ads for our advertisers, we can rely on
a few general guidelines. See below for advice on what will work best for your ad.
I Have An Ad That’s This Size ...
Full Page / Double Page
•
These sizes are great for making a big impact.
•
Be cautious about feeling the need to fill it up with
information. Events and announcements should give
readers what they need to know, but don’t forget to get
readers’ attention first, with a great graphic or photo, and
give details second.
•
Be sure to send very high-resolution imagery (logos and
photos), as ads this large demand very large files.
•
If you’re going to do a huge ad, invest in great imagery hire a local photographer to get just what you want. We
work with some of the best, and would be happy to refer
you to them.
•
Note that left-side Full-Page ads are different from rightside, as there is no crop to the spine. Since it’s impossible
to tell if your ad will be on the left or right (unless you
paid extra for guaranteed placement), it’s best to simply
leave plenty of room for cropping on the vertical axes.
Vertical Half Page
•
Half Verticals are very narrow compared to their height,
which makes them great for lists, such as concert dates.
•
Your photography or graphics will have to take the
narrow size into account.
Horizontal Half Page (“Junior” size in group ads)
•
These sizes are great for making a big impact without
having to buy an entire page.
•
This size is good for businesses with multiple locations,
whose information wouldn’t fit onto a quarter.
Quarter Page (“Junior” size in group ads)
•
Quarter pages are big enough to get across one big idea,
plus the usual logo and contact information.
•
The 1/4 page is our most versatile ad - big enough to
make an impact, but not too expensive. Advertisers who
sign up for a year get a free upsize annually, so that gives
them a half-page annually.
Eighth/Sixth Page (“Sophomore” size in group ads)
•
8th/6th/12th ads are essentially business cards.
They should only have the basic information about
your business: Name, logo, website or other contact
information, and maybe a small picture.
If Your Business ...
•
... has more than two locations, you should get at least
a quarter-page, and consider a half, in order to list your
locations properly.
•
... has a big annual event, consider signing a year-long
contract, because we give businesses a free upsize once
per year. This is particularly great for advertisers with a
half-page, because you can have a full-page ad for your
event.
•
... is part of a group of other similar businesses that
would like to share an ad space, we have customized sizes
and rates for groups (such as a plaza, industry grouping,
or regional group).
•
... is highly seasonal, we can customize your contract to
reflect your business cycle.
•
... needs a logo, or has other design needs such as a
website or other branding, we work with Impulse Nine
Media to bring those things to your company.
General Ad Requirements ...
•
Ads must be submitted to be the proper size. Refer to
the Advertising Rates document for dimentions and pixel
counts.
•
You can download templates from our website at
ediblebajaarizona.com/ad-templates.
•
You can also download other ad resources from
ediblebajaarizona.com/advertise
•
Be sure to use the Advertiser Checklist (available on the
Advertise webpage above).
•
Do not include crop marks with your ads

Free Ad Design Guide
Edible Baja Arizona offers free advertisement design for
our supporters. We offer this service because we want our
advertisements to be effective, to help small businesses who
couldn’t otherwise advertise, and to increase the visual appeal
of the entire magazine.
This guide outlines our policies, best practices for ads,
and guidelines to creating an effective ad. If you have any
questions, please contact Art Director Steve McMackin at
520-777-9551 or steve@ediblebajaarizona.
Advertisers taking advantage
of our free design services
are expected to read and
understand this guide.
How Our System Works
What Ad Design Covers
1. Gathering Materials
Send all the company assets for the ad through your ad
rep. This includes anything that might be used in the
ad, including: Logo, company colors, business hours and
other information, photos you’d like to use, etc.
Please keep in mind that print publications require
high-resolution images, particularly with larger ad sizes.
Consult the Advertising Rates sheet, which details pixel
sizes for the various ads. This is true for both pictues as
well as logos. If needed, we offer design services to create
a new logo, or to recreate a low-resolution logo at print
resolutions.
2. Gathering Information
Your ad representative should also ask about your goals
with the ad, such as getting more soccer teams in to a
trophy shop, announcing a new location, or promoting
an event. Additionally, try to get a sense of the “vibe” you
want to get across: High-end, family friendly, etc.
3. Designing the Ad
Art Director Steve McMackin is in charge of ad creation,
and makes most of them himself. As the publication
deadline approaches, graphic designer Lyric Peate from
Steve’s graphic & web design company Impulse Nine
Media often comes in to design ads while Steve shifts
to doing magazine layout. They are both excellent
designers.
4. Proofing
Once a design has been made, we’ll send an email
through the ProofRocket system. The email will have
a link, and from that link you can see the ad proof, add
notes to Steve, and accept or decline the proof. If you
decline the proof, please give concrete advice about what
you’d like to change (“I think the logo should be bigger”),
and avoid vague language (“it needs to pop”).
5. Revisions and Approval
We’ll create ad proofs for you, and take feedback until
you have an ad that will run in the magazine. We try to
complete ads within about 1-3 revisions.
•
Assembling your ad from elements provided by the
company.
•
Several proofs or iterations of the ad.
•
Ads may be changed each issue. If you plan on having a
new ad each issue, we recomend having a basic template
that can be changed to suit the changes, and to develop a
year-long plan on exactly what you’d like to emphasize in
each issue.
•
Finding stock images, good fonts, etc., for use in the ad.
•
Advice on content, placement, and general design.
•
Use of your free ad in other publications (although we do
not offer resizing to others’ specifications).
What Ad Design Does Not Cover
•
Logo design. Your logo is the face of your company, and
deserves more time and thought than we can offer for
free.
•
Logo resizing. A common problem is that companies
have a logo, but do not have a high-resolution image.
Steve & Lyric can be hired to do this, usually for between
$35-100, depending on the complexity and source
materials.
•
Excessive iterations/proofs. We don’t like putting a
number on how many proofs is too many, because some
changes are trivial, and others are complex. In general, we
try to finish within 1 to 3 revisions of the design, and 5 is
outside the norm.
•
Resizing for other publications’ specs. Although we
have no problem with businesses reusing ads designed by
Edible Baja Arizona in other publications, they often need
to be resized to match their ad sizes. Impulse Nine Media
is available for this service, as well.
•
Photography. We work with a variety of fantastic
photographers, and enthusiastically endorse their work.
We’d be happy to refer them to your business.
