Kristen Bendinger, MD
Hometown: Indianapolis, IN
Undergraduate University and Major: Butler University, Spanish
Medical School: IU School of Medicine
Career Plans: Primary Care, with a special focus on Latino and other immigrant populations
Favorite Aspect of the Program: While I appreciate the variety of clinical experiences across 5 hospitals (with
catchment area including the whole state and beyond), the diversity of our patient population, the strong presence
of MP faculty, and the opportunity for global health experiences, I would have to say what makes the program
truly outstanding is the caliber of my co-residents. It is an honor to build professional and personal relationships
with such an intelligent, caring and fun group of people. There is truly a collegial atmosphere with plenty of
support and camaraderie. I look forward to our weekly conferences and am always glad to find I will be working
with a MP colleague on an upcoming rotation, which happens frequently. They are the kind of people who
challenge you to be a better physician and a better person overall.
Are you in the global health track: Yes. My area of interest currently is Latino immigrants, but I believe the program
is helping prepare me to provide care for a variety of immigrant populations or to practice in a resource-limited
setting in the future. I look forward to participating in the IU-Kenya rotation next year.
Last place you visited - My husband and I drove 5000 miles to visit and hike in the Badlands, Glacier NP,
Yellowstone and Grand Tetons last summer. It was an incredible trip.
Favorite book - Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. It describes the pressing issues facing women
in developing countries in terms of trafficking, human rights violations and unequal access to education and
healthcare. They managed to take on this daunting topic and turn it into an uplifting read, inspiring one to get
involved.
Favorite TV show: The Office. Have you seen the one where Dwight attacks the CPR mannequin?

Career Plans: Hospitalist vs. fellowship, but at this point I am strongly considering a Neonatology fellowship!
Favorite Aspect of the Program: You will probably hear this a lot. There are so many great things, but one of the
things that really drew me was the size of the residency program and our presence on the medical campus. It is
awesome to be able to see co-residents on a daily basis and to work with so many fantastic Med/Peds faculty.
Favorite book: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. I am super excited for the movie coming in Fall of 2013.
Favorite TV show: I have watched all the seasons of Gilmore Girls more times than I'd be willing to confess! The
main character (Rory) was exactly the same age as me while the show was going on and I think that had a lot to do
with my love for the show.
Favorite hospital to rotate through: My favorite hospital, hands down, is Wishard/Eskenazi. I think the main reason
it is truly a trainee-driven hospital and we as residents really get to run the show!

If you could not be a doctor, you would be working in public health or in a lab doing basic science. In my dream life,
I'd just sew and craft all day.
Special interest or talent: I re-learned how to sew after finding a cute little quilt shop here in
Indianapolis. I hadn't used a sewing machine since I was in elementary school, and now I'm making quilts,
garments, bags, and much more!

Favorite place or activity in Indianapolis: Indianapolis Museum of Art—beautiful gardens, free admission, and

One thing people should know about me is that I've lived in Northern & Southern California, New Haven

place. Don't pass up your chance to train here because you've never considered living here!
