All participants must have signed participant’s waiver.
All crew members must wear Coastguard approved lifejackets /PFDs.
All crew members should know how to swim.
Lifeguards will be on duty throughout the event.
Duct tape tends to heat up under the sun. Please use caution when entering your boat. Cool it off with water or
use a small towel to sit on areas with duct tape.
Racing Format:
-
Boats will consist of up to two man crews.
Each boat will race 25 meters in the pool, from wall to wall, within assigned lane.
Boats will be separated into heats. You will be assigned heat cards at check in. Listen for your heat to be called during the
event. When it is called turn in your heat card to designated heat check in area. You will receive your lane assignment.
Once everyone in your heat is ready you will be notified that you have 30 seconds to enter your boat and be ready before
the start. Boat holders will be available to assist you at the wall. At the end of 30 seconds the race will begin.
The race must begin and end with the two person team and boat intact.
Swimming and/or pulling the boat or use of lane lines will result in disqualification.
Fastest times across the 25 meter pool will be awarded. See “Boat Judging” Below for additional awards.
Crews are responsible to retrieve their boat and other remains of it from the pool and throw them away into designated
trash receptacles.
Boats that are still afloat at the end of their heat are eligible for the “Iron Boat” 50m Race.
Boat Judging:
-
On top of being awarded for the fastest times across the pool, boats will also be judged on the following criteria:
o Best Team Uniform
 Funky, Fresh & Funny are just some of the traits that set your team apart from the rest. Get creative and
have fun!
o Most Enthusiastic Team
 Your crew is glowing with confidence. You’re unstoppable, the crowd loves you and we love you. You’re
loud, borderline obnoxious and your positive energy cannot be ignored.
o Most Spectacular Sinking
 The reality is some boats are going to sink. Make it look spectacular!
o Most Creatively Themed Boat
 Use of any theme (Cartoon, Movie, Cars, Boats, Super Heroes etc…)
o Perseverance Award
 You’ve pushed through the roughest seas and remained focused on one thing… not sinking! Your team
needs to be recognized for their resilience against the stubborn cardboard beast.
o Best Design
 Your boat is not only aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but we actually think this design will work when it
comes time to hit the pool.
o People’s Choice
 Let’s face it- we’re not professional judges or scholars on the art of cardboard building. We will leave this
one up to the people. You are the crowd favorite.
o The Iron Boat
 You’ve outlasted the competition and your boat is still afloat and pool worthy. The team is hungry for
more and the 25 meter race was merely a snack for your cardboard carnivore of a boat. Let’s see if you
can eat up the competition in a final 50 meter dash.
Important Reminders:
-
Safety is our main concern.
This is a FUN event! Let’s have fun, practice good sportsmanship, cheer for everyone and let’s make this the most epic
event you’ve participated in!
Team uniforms are highly encouraged.

-TIPS-

9:00am- 2:30pm | Recreation Center 1 | 95-400 Ikaloa Street | Mililani, HI 96789
Construction Tips:
-
-
Boat Design rules are listed on the information form. Please look over before starting to build.
Start with a plan. Sketch out your ideas or start by building a small scale model.
Use multiple layers of cardboard. Over lap seams for more strength.
Score your cardboard along the line of folds for the straightest bends.
Cover and seal all edges with duct tape. Very important.
You may choose to cover the whole bottom hull with duct tape.
Creating cardboard tubes or triangles make good support beams.
o We found that using these beams as extra support in the hull worked very well for
structural stability and buoyancy.
Find a theme and decorate your boat! There are a lot of additional categories to win!
An extra set of paddles (made from cardboard and duct tape) will be allowed for Iron Boat
entries.
Be creative! Find a theme and let’s have fun!
Team uniforms are highly encouraged. Have the whole family and supporters dress up!
Spread the word and invite friends and family! The event is FREE for all spectators!
If you would like to schedule pool time to test run a build, theory or design, or you need build tips or for
further information on the event please contact Kawika at 440-2640 or Jenn at 440-2624.
