The South Town House Handbook

The South Town
House Handbook
September 2015
Housemaster: Mr James Hills MA
Welcome and introduction to The South Town.
The South Town was founded as a day house in 1874. In a sporting competition with North
Town, ‘South Town’ earned the right to prefix its name with the preposition ‘The’, which has
remained ever since. The Town retains a great sense of history, having been located in its
original building since its foundation, and this tradition is represented in the team spirit of the
house today. The South Town’s current Housemaster is Mr Hills. He is supported by an
enthusiastic and experienced tutor team with academic specialisations in all areas of the
school. Our aim is to encourage all the boys to participate fully in all aspects of school life so
that they can enjoy and look back on a fulfilling experience at Clifton. We want everyone to
fulfil their potential. This is the ethos of the house.
House Spirit
The house’s motto Vis Unita Fortior is a fitting message for a house at Clifton. Generations
of South Town boys have learned through experience that Together we are stronger.

South Town Information
Absence
If your son is ill or cannot attend school for any reason please make every effort to ring the house or e
mail the Housemaster. No pupil should leave school (without permission) before the end of the last
scheduled lesson or before 4pm, whichever is later.
Academic Diary
Every pupil is issued with a diary to note down their prep. The diary also contains a copy of the
termly school calendar to assist the pupils in managing their time.
Cars
You may arrange driving lessons within the ‘big break’ times or after school providing you have
given a letter of permission from your parents and your Housemaster has given formal permission.
Driving cars to school is only allowed with permission from the School. No pupil may give lifts to
another for any reason without permission from both sets of parents (passenger and driver).
Chapel
Attendance at weekday and Starred Sunday Service (* services) is compulsory. If a pupils needs to
miss a * service for any reason please can they e mail the school well in advance.
Electrical Equipment
It is a regulation the all electrical equipment in the House is checked by qualified electricians to
ensure there is no risk. This has to take place on an annual basis.
Fire regulations
A fire drill is carried out at the beginning of each term so that the boys know where to assemble in the
event of an emergency. A full Callover takes places, so it is essential that the boys sign in and out of
the house.
Health Centre
There is always a nurse on call at the Health Centre. If you are unwell, please tell the Matron or the
person on duty and we will arrange for you to be seen.
House Hall
This is the upstairs hall where we meet each lunchtime for Callover. Boys must sign in to South Town
no later than 8.20am each morning and must attend Callover at 1.20pm from Tuesday to Friday.
I.T.
Wi-Fi is available in most areas of the house. Some boys bring their own laptops but there are also
computers for your use in the Town Room. You may also use your own mobile phone within the
rules of the School. Please note mobile phones must not be used either during or between lessons. If
phones are used inappropriately they may be confiscated.
Insurance
Please make sure that all your valuable items have personal insurance. The School does not take
responsibility for any items lost, stolen or broken on school premises.
Key Cards
You will be provided with a key card and this is needed for entry around the School and into the
House. You must keep your key card with you at all times.
Kitchen
There are two kitchens, one for Block I and one for block II. The kitchens are supplied with milk,
bread, butter, jam, etc. You are responsible for keeping the kitchens clean and tidy. We expect you to
go to Big School for all main meals.
Lunch
This is served in the dining hall in Big School and depending on your year group you will be asked to
eat at a certain time on your particular floor.
Parent Portal
This is an excellent resource to find information such as calendars, policies, reports, termly letters
and information on parents’ evenings etc
Uniform
School uniform must be worn during the school day. All uniform must be clearly named and the
name tape should have ‘ST’ after your name so that if lost around school your belongings return to the
House! You may wear casual clothes after the school day ends.
