American Leadership Before World War I
The Republican Party had been dominant in Presidential politics since before the
turn of the century. But in 1912 the Democrats won with Woodrow Wilson. How did
this come about? It could be that Americans were tired of the Republican Party by this
time, but that really wasn’t the case. The problem for the party's more conservative
leaders is that Teddy Roosevelt wanted to run again, after giving up the nomination to
William Howard Taft and then deciding Taft’s presidency was both “dull” and too
conservative. Thus, the problem for Republican voters was that their allegiance became
split between two candidates. Unable to become the Republicans' candidate again,
Roosevelt started a new party – the Progressive Party – also nicknamed the ‘Bull Moose
Party’ – so he could run again in the election of 1912. The resulting division of
Republican votes between Taft and Roosevelt assured the Democrats’ victory under
Woodrow Wilson.
