Broward heads to Tampa for FCSAA/NJCAA

BROWARD HEADS TO TAMPA FOR FCSAA/NJCAA REGION 8 TOURNAMENT (APR. 21-22)

This weekend, Broward travels to Tampa for the FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Tournament at
Hillsborough Community College. The Seahawks are ranked third in the latest ITA/NJCAA rankings
(Mar. 16) and enter the tournament winning three matches in a row and five of the last seven. If
Broward finishes among the top three teams in the state tournament point standings, the Seahawks
will advance to the NJCAA Division 1 Championship Tournament (May 7-12) at Tucson, Ariz.
Mar. 24 - St. Petersburg College 5 Broward 4
Bianca Vitale, Kaeli Smashey and Isidora Petkovic won in singles, but the Seahawks were edged
by the Titans at St. Petersburg. Vitale recorded a point at number-four, defeating Anastasha Worlds
6-2, 6-2. Smashey gained a point at number-five with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Ruiz. Petkovic
produced a point at number-six, topping Monica Diaz 6-2, 6-3. The number-three doubles team of
Petkovic and Anastasiia Goncharova were victorious over Ruiz and Diaz with an 8-3 decision.
Mar. 25 - Broward 7 Hillsborough Community College 2
Anastasiia Goncharova, Kiah Turner, Bianca Vitale and Isidora Petkovic were victorious in singles
to help the Seahawks defeat the Hawks at Tampa. Goncharova led 6-1, 1-0 at number-two when
Ceire Mullins retired. Turner tallied a point at number-three after rallying to a 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 win over
Noelia Acuna. Vitale was victorious at number-four with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Samantha Little.
Isidora Petkovic picked up a point at number-six, defeating Nicole Sheler 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, the
number-one team of Konomi Shida and Kiah Turner received a point with a 9-7 win over Mullins
and Gabriela Anzola Marquez. The number-two tandem of Vitale and Smashey edged Sheler and
Marian Ivanov 9-8. Petkovic and Goncharova gained a point at number-three with an 8-3 decision
over Acuna and Little.
Apr. 2 - Broward 7 State College of Florida 2
Anastasiia Goncharova, Kiah Turner, Bianca Vitale, Kaeli Smashey and Yasesky Abreu were
successful in singles to pace the Seahawks over the Manatees. Goncharova grabbed a point at
number-two after battling to a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 victory over Mialiniaina Rakotondrazafy. Turner
registered a point at number-three by topping Maminiaina Rakotondrazafy 6-1, 6-2. Vitale produced
a point at number-four with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Maria Zubkova. Smashey recorded a point at
number-five, defeating Ava Schultz in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Abreu notched her first victory of the
season after winning number-six over Watson 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, the number-two team of Vitale
and Smashey defeated Mami Rakotondrazafy and Zubkova 8-4. The number-three tandem of
Abreu and Goncharova were victorious over Emily Noel and Schultz with an 8-2 decision.
Apr. 7 - Broward 6 Eastern Florida State College 3
Anastasiia Goncharova, Bianca Vitale, Kaeli Smashey and Yasesky Abreu won in singles to help
the Seahawks win the regular season finale at Central Campus. Goncharova gained a point at
number-two by defeating Armelle Cerdan 6-0, 6-7, 6-1. Vitale was victorious at number-four with a
6-2, 6-2 decision over Katharina Drebka. Smashey was successful at number-five, topping
Giulianna Hull 6-4, 6-2. Abreu earned a point at number-six with a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 win over Jamie
Duque. The number-two doubles team of Vitale and Smashey cruised to an 8-0 win over Hull and
Drebka. Abreu and Goncharova received a point at number-three with an 8-4 victory over Duque
and Valeria Arevalo. The match was the last home appearance for sophomores Konomi Shida,
Abreu, Goncharova and Turner.
