MILL SPRINGS ACADEMY ANNUAL GIVING REPORT 2012–2013 If a student can’t learn the way we teach…we should teach the way a student can learn. 2012–2013 BOARD OF TRUSTEES LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES Chairman Angel Murr Headmaster Robert W. Smith Patricia C. Sibley A. Ray Weeks, Jr. Sandra N. Zelley Jack Zimmermann Jonathan Zimring 1 W hen my family first joined the Mill Springs community 6 years ago, the school became the much needed safe-haven we had searched for but never knew existed. Like many families who first come to the school, we cared deeply about finding a place where our bright and vibrant kids would be accepted, nurtured, and challenged to be the very best they possibly could be. And what we didn’t know, or even imagine, was how much we would come to love Mill Springs and be dedicated to its success as so many individuals and families have done from the beginning. As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I wish to thank the entire MSA community for your continued devotion and generosity to the school. In yet another year of economic uncertainty and turmoil, Mill Springs’ faculty and staff have done an outstanding job of providing an individualized education to each of our students as well as an ever improving campus. This has been accomplished through exemplary leadership from our Headmaster, Robert Moore, as well as an extremely talented faculty and staff, dedicated and loving parents, and a strong Board of Trustees. With only modest tuition increases and very tight control of expenses, we remain strong financially with no long-term debt. The financial indicators of a strong, healthy school continue to shine: growing enrollment, high student retention, and generous philanthropic support. As we look to the future please know that Mill Springs Board of Trustees continues to focus with diligence and care on the school’s financial sustainability. The future is bright for Mill Springs Academy and we are grateful to all of those who continue to support its present and future. Angel Murr Chair, Board of Trustees Success in School … Success in Life LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER T raditionally, the annual report is the “report card” on the year past, a time for reflection on the progress and accomplishments of the preceding 12 months. It is also a time to express our gratitude to the many families and individuals whose generosity and confidence in our school make it a truly exceptional place. To all of those listed in this report as well as those who have supported Mill Springs over the past 33 years, I am truly grateful. The 2012–2013 school year was marked by significant growth in the number of students enrolled at Mill Springs Academy. As families continue to seek out our school and even relocate just to have their child attend MSA it has become evident that we have built a reputation for excellence in the LD community. MISSION STATEMENT Mill Springs Academy is a valuesbased educational community dedicated to the academic, physical and social growth of those students who have not realized their potential in traditional classroom settings. ACCREDITATION Southern Association of Independent Schools Southern Association of Colleges and Schools MEMBERSHIP This reputation is due in no small part to our talented and highly dedicated faculty and staff, many of whom have been with the school for fifteen plus years. One such individual, who retired this year, was our High School Director, Bruce Brownlow. Bruce helped build our High School program to what it is today and will be missed greatly. Cynthia Traylor was named Principal of the Upper School beginning on August 1, in time for the start of the 2013-2014 school year. Cynthia has been onboard at MSA since 2000 as Assistant Principal and was well prepared to take the reins from Bruce. She has successfully developed and managed the summer school program, as well as organized and established a diversity program that has been implemented school-wide. We are delighted to have Cynthia in this new role to provide continuity in the leadership core and continue to stimulate growth in the Upper School. Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development In addition to our faculty, staff, parents, and many friends, I would also like to thank the members of Mill Springs’ Board of Trustees which continues to be led by the very capable, Angel Murr. The Board is responsible for providing financial oversight and through its leadership, Mill Springs continues to carry no long-term debt. As enrollment continues to grow and the financial health of the school remains strong, our Board worked hard to lay the groundwork during this year for our next capital project—permanent classroom facilities for our Lower and Middle Schools. This group also oversaw another highly successful Annual Fund which not only exceeded its monetary goal but garnered 94% parent participation in addition to 100% participation from our Board, Faculty, and Staff. National Association of Independent Schools In closing, I would like to recognize the great loss of Mill Springs’ “silent founder,” my father, Raynor Moore who passed away in late May. My dad truly loved the school and was the embodiment of those who support Mill Springs in an often unseen way. He along with my mother, Tweetie Moore, will be greatly missed and certainly never forgotten. ANNUAL FUND Chair Staff/Faculty Chair Michael Holt Vaidehi Rallapalli Mill Springs’ Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our school’s development program and contributes directly to the quality of education that takes place at the school. Gifts to the Annual Fund from parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, friends, and alumni are used to keep annual tuition increases to a minimum. The growth of the Annual Fund reflects great trust in the mission of the school and has established a vital culture of giving as we move forward with our plans for expansion. Great commitment from our parents, volunteers, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and friends of the school has created an exceptional acceleration in the Annual Fund. Continued support of the Annual Fund will ensure a strong future for every student at Mill Springs Academy. The following are just a few examples of ways in which Annual Fund dollars are spent: n Keep tuition increases down (annual tuition increases at MSA have remained at 3% over the past 5 years; much lower than the national average of 7%) n Allow us to attract and maintain valuable staff (through competitive salaries and benefits like 401K, insurance, continuing education) n Fund our Scholarship Endowment program (5% of the monies raised each year are set aside to help fund our scholarship endowment program) n Broaden our Fine Arts curriculum (giving students full access to programs in art, theater, chorus, band, media, and broadcasting) n Provide funds for various classroom enhancements n Covering unanticipated operating expenses (unscheduled repairs, etc.) ANNUAL FUND TOTALS Primary Constituents Board of Trustees Parents Faculty & Staff Grandparents Matching Gifts Friends of MSA 2012–2013 Participation 100% 94% 100% 2012–2013 2011–2012 2010–2011 $48,695 $130,077 $15,027 $40,521 $29,860 $13,800 __________ $23,248 $145,265 $14,790 $40,486 $17,925 $18,160 __________ $24,735 $112,821 $15,904 $47,755 $12,961 $8,836 __________ $277,980 $259,874 $223,012 Success in School … Success in Life 4 ANNUAL FUND DONORS Daniel and Christine Abernethy Caroline Abruzese Carol and Tarpley Adams Michael and Kim Adams Samuel Adams Philip and Cynthia Agcaoili Gez and Donna Agolli Sandra Ahern Carmen Allen Ivan Allen IV Nina Altman Mike and Courtney Antonucci Okey and Hadiza Anueyiagu Kevin and Kimbrel Arculeo Joe and Fran Arena Brian and Julie Armenta Howard and Colleen Austin Wesley and Jenny Avritt Carolina Ayerbe and Damian Farrier Tim and Leigh Ann Ayres Heather Bailey David and Janet Bain Dennis and Jackie Barbare Paul and Mary Barkley Jerry and Janet Barnett Elaine Barron Janice Barton Nathan and Ann Beard Timothy and Lynise Beard Gretchen Beck Garey and Kim Bell Stanley and Marcia Bell Garry and Kathy Berardi Mark and Cathy Berman Matt and Virginia Billips Gregory Bodeep John and Kelly Bonanno Russell and Jill Bonds Joey and Dolores Bonin Joseph and Claudette Bonin Will and Jackie Border Randy and Rita Botnick Randy and Vicki Bott Bruce and Deena Bowers Mike and Bette Rose Bowers John and Barbara Bowler Steve and Trish Boyer Karen and Justin Bradley Richard Brandt and Carmen Neyra Jon and Pam Brasher Judy Brick Lisa Brinkley Margaret and Robert Brito Jeff and Traci Brown Jeffrey and Jessica Brown John and Patrice Brown Scott and Michele Brown Eric Brown Bruce and Marie Brownlow Doris Bryant James and Coleen Bryant Buckhead Uniforms Ian Buda and Bari Calais Bill and Lori Budwitz Erin Buice Don and Kim Bunker 5 Farrel and Ilana Burstein Derek and Mindy Bush Ron and Sharon Bush Brian and Lisa Buxton Monte and Pam Cagle Grier and Ashley Campbell Wayne Carey and Yvonne Satterwhite Daniel and Deb Carmody Andrew and Jinny Carter Wendy Carvotta Julie Cassel Nicholas and Margaret Ceto Don and Bev Chapman Jan Chastain Heidi Chisholm Wayne and Beth Chiu Claire and John Christerson Michael and Jinjie Cicco Bob and Ruth Ann Clanin Mark and Heather Clark Fran Cline Raymond and Devonda Cobb Ed and Jill Coco Mark and Sheila Cohen Darryl and Teri Coleman Gilbert Coleman Jim Coleman Joyce Coleman Lynda Coleman Grant and Susan Collingsworth Collins Cooper Carusi Architects Frances Collins Richard and Leslie Collins William and Rita Collins Carlos Colon Allison Comis Joe and Judy Comis Clarence and Anne Conkin Chris and Trisha Conlin Jessica and Mark Connell Greg and Frances Connor Steven and Heidi Cook Stevi Cordie and Sheldon Glorit Charlie and Laura Covert Michael Cowan Dean and Alice Cowart John and Cheri Coyle Alan and Cathy Crowley Bob and Mary Cullerton John and Julia Cullerton John and Sylvia Cutchin Robert and Penny Daigle Tom and Martha Dalluge Arthur and Kathy Darr Larry and Laura Davenport Robert and Patricia Davis Barbara Day Susan Day Bryan DeHart Kimberly DeHart Darla DeRosa Peter and Lorrie DeSantis Jorge Diaz and Karen Hallock Bruce and Sylvia Dick Ralph and Gina DiClemente Judy Distler Thomas and Debbie Dobbs Brian and Lara Dolan Jim Dolan Larry and Karen Domenico Suzanne R. MSA GOLF TOURNAMENT The “Tee-Off For Technology” Golf Tournament was established in 1998 in order to raise money for MSA’s ever changing technological needs. Mill Springs is one of the only fully integrated laptop schools in the state of Georgia. Because technology is very costly and MSA is a not-for-profit private academy, our school is actively engaged in several fund raising opportunities to help this worthwhile program. All the proceeds from the Golf Tournament benefit our “Technology for Learning” program. Athletics should build self-esteem and foster school pride, and the Mustang Booster Club is dedicated to that outcome. During the 2012–2013 school year, approximately 140 athletes and 20 coaches participated in MSA Athletics. We encourage all parents to join, regardless of the age of your child. Our efforts today will reap rewards for Mustang athletes in the future.
