ELLIS ISLAND Island of Hope…...Island of Tears Did you ever hear of the term: “ Historical Fiction” ? An Historical Fiction is a “story”, part real and part fiction. Historical Fiction literature reflects a time period with accuracy, but the creator of the story can embellish or add events that might actually have taken place in the particular situation or time. Some examples of Historical Fiction that you may have read are Bud, Not Buddy, A Long Walk to Water, and The Day of the Pelican. Project Description: You will be using information given to you (an immigrant “profile”) to tell a Historical Fiction story of an immigrant to the United States. You will be given the name, age, skill, and country of origin of an imaginary immigrant. Upon visiting Ellis Island, the story of your virtual immigrant will come alive. You and your team will develop a presentation that tells the story of your immigrant. You may use any medium to tell your story. Some examples might be: A hard copy “storybook”, and electronic story book, a scrapbook, a short play, a video, an obituary, a eulogy, a diorama, a powerpoint presentation. Perhaps you can think of more possibilities. You might want to include reflections on the following questions: ∙ What were the reasons for your immigrant to leave their country? ∙ What challenges did he or she face? ∙ What are the contributions your immigrant can make to the United States? ∙ What was health care like? ∙ Was your immigrant able to find a job or earn a living? How or what did they do? th th On November 4 one half of the 6 grade will present their Historical Fiction story, and on November th th 5 the other half of 6 grade will present their story in the Maker Lab. Each presentation must be a minimum of 5 minutes, a maximum of 10 minutes. You may present your story in ANY creative way, however your presentation must include: ● Creativity ● A graph or chart that accurately reflects meaningful information ● Teamwork (each of the three involved)
