LANGUAGE TEST
D. Reading comprehension exercises
Instructions: After reading the following
text, answer each of the questions by
selecting the one correct response.
They are an unlikely couple -- a former London
debutante and an Indian peasant farmer turned
taxi driver. Their worlds collided 13 years ago
when Jill Lowe came to India on holiday, fell in
love and married him.
Now she has written a best selling book,
"Yadav: A Roadside Love Story", about how
love can conquer all -- including having to
sleep above a cowshed at her husband's farm
in northern India, eat on mud floors and use
the fields for a toilet.
Lowe and Yadav are a study in opposites. She
was a baronet's granddaughter and had a
silver-spoon upbringing. Yadav got a barebones education at a village school in the
remote reaches of dusty Haryana state in
northern India.
She likes fine wines and smoked salmon while
his favourite meal is roti -- Indian bread -- and
yoghurt and he has a fondness for cheap
Indian whisky. His best friends are tea-sellers
and mechanics while hers are distinctly upper
crust. Despite the huge social and cultural gulf
and 13-year age gap -- he's 52 and she's 65 -their relationship has survived. They now have
left the farm and live in a small flat in a Delhi
suburb out of which they run a city tour
agency.
Lowe was 52 when she came to India after
raising five children and seeing her fortunes
plummet when her barrister husband lost all
their money, including her inheritance. The end
to their wealth and eventually their marriage
left her working as a London tour guide,
scrambling to make ends meet for her children.
During the first year of the family's troubles,
she contemplated suicide but was saved by
"not knowing precisely how many pills to take
and being too tired to find out".

Lowe, who looks far too young to draw a
pension, says she came to India looking for a
mid-life escape. "I'd had my children young, my
youngest had her degree, and for the first time
I was free. I was 52. I needed a change."
In New Delhi, Lowe set off with driver Yadav
whose services she obtained through a travel
agent. The book, which is partly a travel story,
describes her first trip around the country with
Yadav in an old, ancient Ambassador
automobile, the bulky workhorse of Indian
roads.
Yadav, then a widower whose children were
grown, was told by his boss that Lowe was a
tour guide and should be given first class
treatment. He recalled how he told her: "You
are very, very VIP. I will give you a very special
stamp on your heart." Three years later they
wed. While frank about their relationship, she
is reticent about how her offspring viewed her
going off to India and marrying, except to say:
"I think they'd like me to be at home knitting."
But she does talk about the shock the
relationship evoked in India, where crossing
such social divides is rare in a deeply classand caste-conscious society. They were turned
away from hotels when proprietors realised
they would be sharing a room and waiters
were taken askance to see them at the same
table. New Delhi hostesses were reluctant to
invite them for dinner although Lowe's new
author status has now given them social
aplomb.
With all the snubs and second glances, would
she do it again? Absolutely. "After years of
heartbreak and scrambling up brick walls
without anything to hang on to, I've had the
most wonderful 13 years."
