MR. CAM KRAMER
Cam Kramer is Senior
Senior Vice President and
Chief Operating Officer,
Arc Resources Ltd. and
oversees all aspects of
ARC’s operating activities. He has over 20
years of experience in the North American oil
and gas industry. Mr. Kramer has a broad
background in operations and leadership.
He has contributed to the Schulich School
of Engineering Leaders campaign by helping
to establish a $25,000 endowment that will
generate a $1,000 annual bursary for an
undergraduate student. As a graduate of
the Department of Chemical and Petroleum
Engineering, he knows this bursary is a
meaningful way to give back to the profession
that has brought him success. Currently Cam
sits on the Engineering Leaders Campaign
Cabinet.
MR. MICHAEL ALGRA
Michael is an
undergraduate student in
his fourth and final year of
Civil Engineering with an
Energy and Environment
specialization at the University of Calgary.
He has been the recipient of the AECOM
Scholarship, Fluor Canada Ltd. Scholarship,
Encana Academic and Community Scholarship,
and Seymour Schulich Academic Entrance
Scholarship for students outside of Calgary.
Michael has been involved with many clubs on
campus including the Energy and Environment

Building Competition. In the summer of 2010,
Michael embarked on a round the world trip
that included studying renewable energy in
China as well as co-founding a small business
in Rwanda. He is very interested in sustainable
engineering and approaching problems from
a holistic point of view when he isn’t enjoying
recreation in the mountains.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
MR. MIKE BEGIN
Mike Begin is President
and CEO of Spartan
Controls – a high energy,
entrepreneurial, employee
owned company of 900
Spartans who sell, apply, and service process
control and instrumentation products - serving
customers from 12 locations across western
Canada. Spartan is a well-known market leader,
has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best 50
Managed Companies for the past twelve years,
and is a champion of education and charities
that support families, youth and children. Mike is
a current and past member for various company
and association boards, as well as various postsecondary advisories. He recently completed
six years on the SAIT Board of Governors, four of
those years as Chair, and has been recognized
for playing a key role in the recent completion of
SAIT’s $400M Trades and Technology Complex.
Prior to his current role at Spartan, Mike has
held executive positions based in the US with
global responsibilities, in Singapore with Asia
Pacific responsibilities, and Canadian leadership
roles. Currently Mike sits on the Schulich Industry
Advisory Council for the Shculich School of
Engineering at the University of Calgary.

The 22nd annual Student
Excellence Awards is a
celebration of student
excellence and achievement
and of the generous philanthropists that have
invested in the future of Schulich School of
Engineering students. At this Prestigious event,
student award recipients are provided with
the opportunity to meet with the individuals
and organizations that have supported their
education.
Every year, well over $5-million dollars is awarded
to exceptional Schulich School of Engineering
students through bursaries and scholarships.
Receiving a student award not only recognizes
excellence, but also allows for participation in
enrichment activities and in some cases helps to
cover basic needs so that students are fully able
to attend to their studies.
At the Schulich School of Engineering, we are
passionate about providing the opportunity for all
ambitious students, regardless of background, to
apply their talents to the engineering profession.
Through student awards we are building a culture
of excellence at our school that promotes hard
work, dedication and most of all, leadership.
Student awards have a tremendous impact not
only on individual lives but on this engineering
school. We applaud the benefactors of these

ABOUT THE EVENT SPONSOR
The Student Excellence Awards is sponsored by the
Engineering Associates Program at the Schulich
School of Engineering. This program is a valuable
partnership between the engineering school and
industry partners. The goal of the program is to
build and maintain a world class engineering school
that will exceed society’s expectations and needs
for engineering education, research and service.
Members of Engineering Associates Program meet
for a variety of professional development and social
activities such as monthly breakfast meetings, the
Student Excellence Awards, the Dean’s Holiday
Reception, and special events. The program is in its
22nd year.
